What is the Lead Platform

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 11:15 am

Considering that the PC version comes with "The Creation Kit" [which lets you use the same tools the devs use to build the game; to add to and mod the game itself], I thought it would be obvious that the PC is the lead console for Skyrim.

The creation kit is just another reason why the PC version will once again get the shaft. Why give the PC version a personalized GUI when the modding community will do it for you for free? Why give the PC version better graphics when the modding community will do it for you for free?

The creation kit gives Bethesda an "Out" and an excuse to only port the XBox version as is to the PC.

Let me add one more thing, I woud love for a dev to post and say I was wrong and that Skyrim will be different. I don't think that will happen though.

I imagine it's the Xbox 360. It's the most popular console on the market, not to mention it's a very powerful demographic to sell for. And Bethesda wants to make sure that the game feels the same on all platforms, so why wouldn't they develop primarily on the lesser (and by lesser, I mean control and function wise, not X > Y wise) platform?

Can someone tell me this though. If Fallout: New Vegas was meant to be developed for the Xbox 360, then why does that version suffer with the most problems out of all the platforms? And don't go blaming and flaming Obsidian like some of you are inclined to do.

I too wish a dev would clear this up.

As far as I know, the PC has always been Bethesda Game Studios lead platform - they just scale features back to fit the consoles. :violin:

I hope its 2.

PC and PS3 and the PS3 one ported to the 360.

PS3 isn't difficult to code for if you know what your doing.

360 to PS3 = crap port for PS3

PS3 to 360 = better port for 360.

I just hope the 360 isn't lead platform otherwise the PS3 will be dummed down and I'll have to try and see if my lappy will run the game!!

I was poking around on the web looking for some info related to this thread and came across this article. Somewhat unrelated, but kind of amusing regardless.

http://gamer.blorge.com/2009/08/15/bethesda-no-plans-for-sequel-to-oblivion-ps3xbox-360pc/

Basically in August of 2009, Todd claimed there was no TES game in development and no plans for one. Funny that while he said those words his team was right in the depths of development of Skyrim.

If you are just excited about the visual [graphics] possibilities of Skyrim - get the PC version, provided you have the necessary rig to play it at max settings.

If you just care about the story however, get it on the consoles; as it will give you everything you require.

As for myself, I will get the PC version, as the graphics not only add to the experience - they make them for me. :foodndrink:

This is very true! Bad Company 2 was developed for PS3 and then ported to 360 and both versions looks identical and performs flawless. It pays off more in the long run to do the hard job first.

Up until Oblivion, yes. Look at oblivion and tell me that was made primarily with the PC in mind and i'll call you a liar. Nothing about the interface is on par with contemporary (or even older) PC games. That the game has been designed with a controller as the primary input device doesn't suggest a PC led development.

Comparing sales on different platforms is nigh on impossible as the PC market is so fragmented. PC gamers tended to buy their games via cheap mail order sites (eg. play.com in the UK) rather than bricks and mortar stores and those sites didn't get included in cross platform charts so there wasn't any way of tracking.

Judging the size of the PC market is equally hard. You've got games that are still in Beta selling a million copies (minecraft) and WoW plus all the other MMOs probably accounting for a larger games playing population than there are mainstream consoles. Nvidia claiming to have sold something like 100m enthusiast level cards in a year suggesting the potential PC market dawarves the console one. On the other hand you have a raft of traditional PC development companies either wholesale abandoning the platform or treating it as an afterthought (orr in the case of epic treating it like something you stepped in). What i do know is cross-platform, console focussed development with mouse acceleration, big fonts and designed for controller menus is not the way to get sales on the PC.

I have a hunch the lead platform is the xbox 360. It makes commercial sense, its got a bigger user base.

Well the PC version had better have significant improvements over the console versions - things like better textures, better shadows, longer draw-distances and faster loading times - to name a few.

I have a powerful PC and I also own all of the consoles - I am fully aware that a beastly PC is far more powerful than the current generation of consoles. So then, why do console players get so irritated when the PC community starts talking shop about what PC's could/should do with Skyrim and how the consoles can't handle them? It's not meant to start flame wars - it's common knowledge that PC's can do a lot more than consloes - why does that make some people angry? :banghead:

Because we’re almost certainly going to have to listen to you guys moan and complain when Skyrim comes out and your pet platform (the tiniest proportion of the three on which the game will be sold) doesn’t get all the tender love and care you want—or, to put it more pointedly, act like you deserve. Like it or not, the PC isn’t the focus for multi-platform titles.

But it should be imbued with features that the consoles cannot do - like better textures, lighting, shadows, etc.

Why do this? Because it makes BGS able to make the game exactly the way they want to [i.e. their original vision for the game] - without having to cut corners for the console crowd.
