What is the Lead Platform

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 1:37 am

You mean you would buy it for the pc then later get it for console? what are your reasons for this?

Well with my experiences with Oblivion, I found that the PC game was well superior to the PS3. But later on I found the PS3 good for a bit of light play, I managed to get the Goty version for a bargain basemant price. First of all though I'll have to establish whether my PC is up to Skyrim.

Ps3. Cell processor. Enough said.

What about it? This just seems kind of random to me.

WTF does this have to do with Skyrim?

Don't we have enough of these threads?

Cell processor shreds through whatever you throw at it. Why wouldn't you have ps3 as the lead?

How does it not?

He was asking what platform the game will be developed on, now they've just gotten into console debate though.

Just seems that this thread is just about whats better and erupt into a console war probably.

Just be on the lookout.

Well we want to know what the main development platform for Skyrim is. That helps us estimate how it will be on the other systems.

I haven't seen too many threads asking this question.

Passive aggressiveness is the only right way to conduct yourself in a mature manner. Isn't it?

sorry, but It's true though. If simple UI coding won't be done, prospects of tougher DX11 coding are laughable.

Simple logic.

Ps3 wasn't the lead platform for oblivion but still is largely considered superior to the 360 version performance wise. So I don't think knowing what the lead platform is will directly translate to the "better" version.

This discussion is constructive lets just shy away from turning it into a console war.

One reasone is the similarities between coding Xbox and PC. It would be far easier to port from Xbox to PC.

Another reason, is that you do not use the best hardware on a system to determine a lead system. If you develop on PS3 and it "vastly out preforms" Xbox and PC  , then you have to spend a lot of extra time limiting the game until it runs smoothly on the other hardware. On the other hand, if you were able to port it, and not have to worry major about performance and optimization issues, you save time. Don't get me wrong, the PS3 is a good system, you just want to play it safe in the game Industry and take the smartest path.

I wouldn't pre-order a version based on the Lead-Platform until proper technical reviews come out.

That being said, you can almost always bet the PC performance will be exceedingly higher no matter what the lead platform is, especially for a BSG game. (as long as you meat the recommended specs)

Looking at the lead platform doesn't estimate performance unless you are looking at them working from PC and porting to console. That is because PC has unknown hardware for each end user. So if they get it working on PC, there is no guarantee that it will work on consoles. Look at Oblivion. They had final hardware for the Xbox 360 for only 6 months. They took a major risk, but luckily pulled through. If you work on a console, you know your end-hardware and peripherals, and can have a basis for performance that should extend across the other platforms.

What we look for with a lead platform is things like the user interface, and directX version. The user interface on PC should differ from a console because of the varying length away from the screen you sit when playing on PC vs Console. Also PC has varying resolutions which higher ones make jagged edges stand out on scaled interfaces when you are yay close to your monitor. Also Interfaces can be more friendly to a mouse and keyboard or to gamepad.

Which console? As far as Bethesda games go, I swear us PS3 players get the least attention. That is not the case with the 360.

Yep, I agree. I don't really know why this is the case. I could understand if the game used xbox live. Hopefully PS3 will get equal attention to the 360 in Skyrim.

Tod Howard has said on multiple occasions that they feel comfortable with DX9.

That's sad. I hope they can add support to the new engine easily, because if Fallout 4 doesn't have DX10/11 when it's released in a few years, it'll look pretty dated.

I'm referring partially to DLC, and I believe it's due to exclusivity deals, as well as to some lack of polish and differences between the actual consoles and how they are to be coded for. I'm not sure how the 360 version of GOTY Fallout 3 ran, but it was horrible on my PS3. Before the DLC, it ran fine, though.

console first and then ported to the PC.
Just look at the UI.
It screams console at you. Hell the only thing it dont do is hit you with a sign saying console.
We will be lucky if they bother to make a UI for the PC.

I would imagine it's being developed on PC using the Creation Kit and the Xbox 360 and PS3 development kits. It's a simultaneous release this time, so it can't really be developed on one and then ported to another except insomuch as the majority of the modelling and art tools are PC or Apple based.

As for the UI, as long as they made an option for 1080p on the consoles, it should look fine on most PCs as well. The UI is so heavily changed this time that there may not even be a need for UI customization.....eliminating the HUD alone goes a long way toward avoiding that issue.

edit: looked through the thread a bit and seriously, there's only one image of the UI that's been released to my knowledge and there is nothing I can see there that could be changed to make it better for the PC.

In the Sound video I think that you can see a 360 dev kit so it is likely made primarily for consoles although as many have said it was always meant to be put out on all 3 systems so I would not be to worried on which you play it on it will be awsome

The Cell is difficult to program for. It has a lot of potential power compared to processors of it's time, but extracting that power requires efforts not needed on other platforms, so developing for it specifically is often a waste of resources. Besides, general processing is not the problem, its memory and graphics (which are limited on the consoles because of cost and age, respectively). In that sense the PS3 and 360 are similar, whereas a modern high-end PC can be counted on having 4-8 times the resouces of either console, making it much easier to develop for, but making porting more difficult.

Regardless, when making a multi-platform game it's best to develop for the least-powerful platform using the lowest common features. Supporting multiple platforms is a drag on the technological advancement of many industries (though a boon to the bottom-line) and gaming is no different.

Because "the power of the cell" was impressive at launch, but has degenerated into so much marketing and hot air as time goes on, and the PS3 doesn't. It's still impressive for its age, and can hold its own, but it's really no match for technology 6 years older than it. Similar to how the space shuttle is an incredibly impressive feat of engineering, but asking it to race a Foundation Battlecruiser is perhaps asking a little much.

That, and the fact that Cell is apparently a [censored] to program for. A lot of compromises have to be made, usually, because the architecture is so different than the PC/360.
