[REL] What's on the Menu?

What's on the Menu?

This is my second mod. I wanted to have a way for a player to know which ingredients were safe to eat (positive first effect) without giving away any detailed information, so I thought "Why not put the info on a menu?". In creating the little menu that I put in Arrille's Tradehouse I learned how to edit scroll text, add images to scrolls, put an image on a ground mesh, and create an icon. It was a challenge, but I had lots of help from very nice people and I had a lot of fun doing it. It went through several iterations, but should now be stable at v1.3.

Description

You arrive on an unfamiliar island. You know nothing about the local food or customs. Since you are unskilled at determining what is and is not safe to eat, you think it prudent not to go munching on whatever plant or animal material you find at the side of the road as you would prefer not to spend a lot of your time being ill. You are interested in some training in this regard so that you can become self-sufficient, but you have very little money.

What's the solution? Grab a menu at Arrille's Tradehouse!

Upstairs on a table, free for the taking, is a menu that lists all foods that are safe to eat (though you should be wary of some of the beverages). Perfect for the budding alchemist who wants to learn on his/her own without those nasty side effects. And it's lightweight, so you can carry it around as a reference.

Notes:

This mod imparts no skill points or buffs. It exists purely for knowledge and amusemant.

Great to see you finally got those alpha channels working for you, and the new font is really good too. They look great! :foodndrink:

Interesting.. it reminds me of the first mod I ever made for personal use. After playing vanilla MW for a long time, I actually had this space in my closet where I had taped up pages of potions and the ingredients they needed. I had to keep remaking them cuz they would fall and get ruined or something, but I liked the reference they gave me.

So finally I'd had enough of reinventing the notes and had enough of them that I decided to make it into a book I called "The Master Alchemist's Book" which contained only the recipes that had no negative effects, reasoning that only a master would know that. I carried that thing with me all the time, and had a plan to make it a quest reward one day. I have long since lost the mod, cuz I never uploaded it, but maybe I should see about recreating it. :read:

Anyways, I think I might download your mod. :) It will remind me of my roots.. the good ol' days when MW was new to me. That would do my modding a world of good. It's been a long time since I dusted off the CS. Got too disappointed in the people I used to work with before.. just maybe I'll figure out something that will allow me to start again.

Thanks for the kind words, guys! I've decided to do a series that I'm tentatively calling The Traveller's Guide to Dining. There would be one mod for each tavern / inn (29 on Vvardenfell at last count). (Thanks to Alaisiagae for sparking the idea!) The inspiration was to do a menu for each one, but I also want to do some supporting work around each menu to give each place more life and make it so that you can actually buy the foods and talk to waiters about the meals. I'm even making up some Dunmer terms associated with food. I'm currently working on The Rat in the Pot (I love that name!). I only hope the CS is able to do what I'm envisioning.

Maholix, you should start again. The people on this forum are very nice. I think you'd get a lot of support.

Perfect idea. I do hope you expand upon it even further.
If you can't make new models for the meals you have in mind, remember that the resources of Necessities of Morrowind are available for modders.

Thanks, Pluto. I'll check out NoM at some point. I want to make sure I don't clash with it anyway if I can avoid it.

My husband had come up with a clever idea for meal models -- using a covered pot model and just giving it the meal name. Since you'd want to be carrying the meals around with you, it only makes sense that you'd want take-out containers! :D
