What's the most versatile class/race to play through all the

Post » Sun Dec 04, 2011 5:41 pm

Just as the title says, I'm curious as to the insight of others as to what is the most versatile class to enjoy all of the TES games with. I will be playing the same character through all of them (Excluding Skyrim, that's the biggest jump in the timeline... unless of course I pick a race that can live that long.).

I want to be able to do almost all aspects of the game, but I don't necessarily have to be a master at all of them. A sort of "Jack of all trades, master of none" deal. I want to steal, kill, and destroy. Meaning sneak around, steal things, be able to hold my own, and use magic as well. I want to be able to wear a large portion of the armor in each of the games, use a large portion of the weapons, etc etc. I'm basicly looking for the best "Jack of all trades" class. Maybe it's a custom class?

Any insight?

Thanks,
Bashur

I'm not sure about Arena & Daggerfall, but in Morrowind and Oblivion anyone can be anyone and do anything. I'd say the easiest race to do this with is play as the Dunmer/Dark Elf.

I always play as a Breton in Oblivion and for the magicka bonus and resistance, and level up Endurance to 100 asap. After that, I level up my sneak to 100 so I don't have to worry about it, (Stealing and Sneak Attack) and then I play the game as a battlemage using enchanted melee weapons/arrows and spells. Arrows from afar, and swords when they get close, with a few spells in between.

Lately I started up Morrowind, and I thought I'd pick a different race for a change. I sort of regret the bonuses I'm missing out on that Bretons acquire.

The most versatile races that I've found are Imperials and Dunmer. Both are decent at combat, but not specialists in it. Neither is particularly good or bad at stealth, and the Dunmer's slight advantage in magical attack and fire resistance is offset by their lower personality.

The LEAST versatile races, in my opinion, are Orcs and Nords, and I don't particularly care to play either.

I consider Stealth to be the most versatile class, although a Custom class gives far more versatility than any of the pre-defined ones.

I generally pick one Combat-class main weapon, either Medium or Heavy armor as a major/minor and often with Light armor as a minor/major, Armorer as a minor, from one to three magical schools (depending on the role of the character), and the rest Stealth skills. Your weapon skills increase quickly, so if you've got decent Agility, you can bring a second weapon (often either Short Blade or Spear) up to par by using it against weak creatures, and saving your "main" weapon for the nasty stuff. Speechcraft is a near-must, and Sneak has to be a Major unless you either don't intend to ever use it or expect to buy a gazillion levels of training just to get started. If you don't pick either Medium or Heavy armor, and wear at least a couple of pieces, your Endurance tends to stagnate, and you can never make up the lost hitpoints when you really need them in the expansions.

A dunmer with a custom class would suit your needs perfectly.

From experience, I would say that Imperials are the most versatile. I'm a Nord kinda guy, as well.

Thanks for the replies guys, I think with these suggestions and my community discussing it, I will be going with a Dunmer... spellsword maybe. Not sure about the class still, you can't create a custom class in Arena, not sure about Daggerfall.

In my opinion, this is the most to least versatile:

Dunmer
Imperial
Bosmer
Breton
Argonian
Khajit
Altmer
Redguard
Nord
Orc

For a Jack of all trades, nothing does it better than a dunmer. If you want your character in skyrim, you could have them turn into a vampire. My personal choice for a general class would be to have 1hand melee with light armor. Destruction, restoration, or mysticism(mostly for the enchanting) as well as lockpicking and sneaking. Idk what I would call the class.
