So, what's the news on a hardcoe mode?

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 2:59 pm

So since they have hardcoe mode in New Vegas, I was wondering about hardcoe mode in Skyrim? Would any of you want it?

Personally I'd love it and play it religiously, added with the hud-less first person view and stunning graphics.....

There's no news yet, but my hopes are high (I know I shouldn't, I can't help myself :P). I'd love to play Skyrim with a hardcoe/survival mode.

I liked hardcoe in FNV so much, that I don't know how to play without it anymore. But even if the game doesn't have it, I'm sure someone will make a mod that fixes it. PC gaming FTW

I'd love to have a hardcoe mode only because of the hunger and thirst features.

Hell yes! Hell yes.

If we're going full immersion, and total realism then that's a 'must-be' for me. Plus I would make raw, and unwelcoming wilderness of Skyrim that much more hostile, and respectable. Also since we where talking "Don't show us the 'on the spot' items value, why not give small (yet ever so fitting, and natural in my opinion) buff, and make some plants, and fungi recognizable only for characters with at least bit of know-how (and of course rarer specimens, higher skill required). That could force some starving players to take their chances. It would also make more locations, then ruins, shrines and such valuable. The glee of finding a babbling, mountain stream with a heard of deers drinking out of it. More of gameplay in the gameplay.

Don't forget NV was NOT developed by Bethesda.

Anyways, it was an interesting idea, but the implementation was a bit lacking. Would be interesting to see such a feature in Skyrim but honestly, if that means losing time developing it instead of foccusing on the actual game, I pass. Besides a mod will add it for sure. Voted "don't care".

I don't want it and I will not play it. If it is there as optional then I really don't care but I played it in NV and it really did not add anything for me at all. It seemed more like a constant chore that I had to keep doing every once in awhile.

I found it tedious and stupid.
Thirst hunger and sleep were all just RAD metres with different names.
Plus you had to consume a crapload of stuff more than any normal human would to survive.

I think that was one of the features developed by Obsidian, as mentioned above Bethesda did not develop New Vegas. I doubt it'll be in Skyrim by default...perhaps it might make for a good mod idea though.

I voted yes, I thought it was a welcome addition to NV and I never played without it so I'd like to see something similar in Skyrim.

But Beth say they pay attention to mods, and there are mods that do this for OB and MW (IIRC), so you never know...

I wouldn't want a direct replica of the NV system, partly because the hunger and thirst and need of sleep were measured with bars and the effects were just statistical, like -1 endurance or what not. It should really feel in a different way, we could order a stew and a beer from a tavern, sit down and listen to gossip/rumors while our PC would consume it. Eating, sleeping and drinking should add BONUSES instead of only negative effects if you don't eat them. Having all those three things fixed at the same time could grant bonuses to healing, less stamina consumtion or something similar. Not doing those could lead to more stamina consumtion, less healing effects, slower movement, less damage or something similar. And food shouldn't just take away "-105" from our food "bar", something different would have to happen for me to use it in Skyrim. I used in in NV, but didn't like it that much and only got it for the trophy, silly me.

As an option I would not hate it, but in my opinion hardcoe mode in FNV is more tedious than really challenging. If they implement something down that path I hope it adds something useful and fun to the gameplay instead of just beeing annoying. I mean, what's fun about having to eat food and drink water in a computer game? I prefer rich immersive environments, interesting quests and locations and believable game characters with good dialogue.

In another thread people suggested having weather effects, so getting frostbite or pneumonia if you don't wrap up in very cold places, getting caught in blizzards which would force you to find shelter etc. It would be cool if you were out exploring and the conditions meant you had to set up camp (if that's in as well) and go hunting for food and pelts. Of course, if it's not your thing it's not your thing, but I think it could be really fun if done right.

Hey, that's not a bad idea at all! And maybe this time around the Nord's resistance to Frost will actually come in handy.

Btw great avatar, mate, is it from a scene from a certain movie that I think it is? :D

Edit: Lass, not mate, sorry, messed up the gender. ^_^

If there is in fact a hardcoe mode, the only reason I would play it would be to get the achievement. I don't really care to have to eat, drink, and sleep while playing a game.

I would love a system that forces you to eat and drink regularly, but unfortunately I'm not sure it would fit the Elder Scrolls feel. For one thing, you are not trying to "survive" like you are in Fallout. Yes, you want to stay alive, but it doesn't feel like a desolate wasteland where you are constantly struggling to find food & water. That's the other problem. From what I remember, there's no water or even regular drinks in TES games. You can't just drink Alcohol constantly, and there are no bottles of water in the lore. So you would need to go to a tavern and order a glass of water every time you wanted a drink. Then the final issue I have. This world is magical. You can heal yourself with the wave of your hand. It would be unnatural to have to see a doctor in this world, when have the characters can just wave their hands and their cured.

As much as I loved the system in Fallout: NV, I just don't see it working here. That's not to say I wouldn't like to see some added realism in some areas... but I can't see an entire mode being added when so little of New Vegas' hardcoe mode would match Skyrim's world.

Didn't care about it in NV, didn't bother with similar mods in FO3/etc.

And had enough "challenge" playing on Normal difficulty in all those games. :)

That said, it being an option doesn't hurt anyone. (Well, unless it uses up budget that could have been spent better elsewhere... :D)

I'd want a list of hardcoe features to choose from:

-Thirst
-hunger
-Sleepiness
-No oblivion style fast travel (only provided theres an alternative IMO)
-headshot death (if someone headshots you your dead)
-not being able to save whenever you want (some people like this idea, i wouldnt pick it)

I'm sure there's tons of more ideas.
