What's the one thing that irritates you about companion's?

Post » Fri Feb 12, 2016 8:02 pm

The one companion that I just LOVE running around with is Dogmeat. The main issue I have with him is almost immediatly when a turret starts firing he charges right through the direction it's firing from and he ends up getting knocked down almost every time. Fallout New Vegas & Fallout 3 has the same bothersome issue with the companions AI. I do think he's bold as once in a while he does win against turrets. Otherwise he's a great companion. What's the one thing that irritates you about the certain actions companions do.

Standing in the doorway so I can't get through. You would think they would get the hint as I try to push my way through.

Companions getting knocked down isn't a problem for me. Dogmeat is small enough that I can shoot around him pretty easilly, but if the others go melee they just get in the way more often than not. The thing that really irritates me though, is when I need to move somewhere quickly and somebody is standing there trying to push me into the grenade or the mine or the gunfire or whatever it is I'm trying to get away from.

Getting in my way. It does not happen often, but sometimes it is just so freaking annoying!

It's kind of an issue when your trying to quietly destroy the turret with a silenced weapon, and then he alerts the entire base to my presence. Some of the hostile bases seem to have guys with a Fat Man, I try to go silently until I know for sure he's taken care of or until I know there isn't one. When the turret starts firing the entire base knows I'm there, which then the guy with a Fat Man can one shot me. It's like an alarm system of some sort.

I don't like using companions but thought I'd give it a try in one of my playthroughs....

I was with Danse, sneaking about when he started in on his life story. DUDE! SHUT UP! I wanted to shoot him in the face.

I had Deacon and again in stealth mode, whenever I would stop, his damned gun was right in my face.

...and they are always in the way.

They are too weak in higher difficulty.

Dogmeat is not for battle, and he works with lone wonderer perk so he is the only worthy companion to bring along.

Here is another I want to add whenever I go to destroy loot for building materials, my companion walks right through the pile I made tossing the loot all over the settlement practically.

That they lag so far behind. I have a mod for Skyrim which lets them walk beside you prefer that. I like how Dogmeat ranges a little ahead like areal dog would.

Quite a lot irritates me about them. I can only stand to have Danse with me, and he has issues too. Most of my problems have nothing to do with their ability to sneak, stay out of a fight, get in my way, etc. Most of that can be handled with the companion control interface (if Danse starts to move out into combat before I want him to I move him back behind me and he'll stay there which gives me plenty of time to snipe, plan my shots, etc.). I've cleared out pretty much every location in the game with him in tow and I play a sneaky sniper. He doesn't cramp my style. In fact, when I go into somewhere like Gunner's Plaza I give him a missile launcher, the best minigun I've found and some grenades and he makes himself spectacularly useful.

So, anyway, I could go on and on about this, but this is my short list:

1) Activating them is super finicky. When I click on them I have to walk back, forth, closer, further, etc to get the dialogue to pop up so I can talk to them. Makes me bonkers. Sometimes I can click and talk, which is wonderful, but there's just this magic distance where things work smoothly and anything else requires a lot of effort.

2) Deacon. If you can romance Curie you should be able to romance Deacon. Also Nick. If a player wants to romance him they should be able to. Romantic love doesn't require working parts.

3) Some of their idle pvssyr plays when/where it shouldn't. They say things that don't belong in a particular location or at a particular time. I've seen this most often with Danse because he and I have spent so many hours together (something like 250), but the others do it too. This isn't game breaking by any means, but it's something I notice each and every time it happens.

4) Extremely petty issue: I hate how they sit down every chance they get. They're all so lazy! :P

I love that about Dogmeat.

Edit: Oh, and what he'll do to teddy bears!

Interesting, I have to try that with Piper to hear the misplaced stuff she might say.

Typically I like the companions and their banter. But it REALLY irritates me when they stick their big assed heads in the way about the time you shoot a missile.

pvssyr when in sneak mode. Piper made a joke about it, I dismissed her on the spot, never used one since.

Complaining about me picking up trashes. I shoot MacCready with an auto gun everytime he says "don't make me carry that crap".

Getting in the way.

Getting in the way just as I have a clear shot.

Getting in the way in doorways.

Getting in the way as I'm admiring the view.

Getting in the way when I'm talking to an NPC by walking between us.

Getting in the way when building. Do you mind? I want to build there.

Just....generally getting in the way :)

Erm, ruining stealth.

Starting combat before I'm ready.

Never shutting up.

Repeating the same lines over and over.

The frequency of said lines.

Lack of instructions like follow distance and how aggressive they should be.

Walking into traps. I mean for God's sake....

Think that'll do hehe. Not that I'm having a go or anything, wherever possible I never take companions anyway. F4 is no exception haha :)

It doesn't bother me that they get in the way or pvssyr when sneaking, or repeat themselves a lot. I still hear different things once in awhile. Their combat barks make me chuckle - especially Cait. The thing that is a bit annoying to me is something llamaRCA mentioned - chasing after them when you activated them to talk. I find myself raising my weapon or going into sneak mode as a workaround to them wandering off. I've just had Piper and Cait so far.

It used to be the comments about my collecting but, I've modded that out, now, as I couldn't stand it any longer, lol.

Probably the only thing for me now is some of the bossy comments. God forbid you you fire an extra bullet when everything's dead (especially with the flamer) or walk through a puddle in power armor, or the rad counter is picking up 1 rad (Danse acts like it's 1000 rads a second).

Bossy pvssyr. Piper got dismissed fairly early because of a condescending comment. I think she's more for the 'fresh out of the vault clueless pre-war person' rather than level 40 'know it all.'

My main complaint is just when I'm trying to walk through a door and they're standing right in the way. Also, when they refuse to get into an elevator. I know they'll just respawn inside the elevator with me, but it's a matter of principle. I don't want to leave them behind...lol
