What's the point of armor?

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 5:47 pm

In fact what's the point of anything in this? Some help please!

I'm a level 15 Imperial. I'm wearing heavy armor. My heavy armor skill is 40. Block is 27. One handed is 37. Two handed is 29. Restoration 34. Destruction 31. Conjuration 26.

Magicka 140
Health 150
Stamina 150

I have steel armor on. Steel cuffed boots. A steel helmet. Ironhand gauntlets. An armor rating of 100. Using some magic and a fine orcish war axe or an orcish greatsword. Can do 25 damage with the orcish greatsword. 16 damage with the axe.

Am I supposed to be getting owned by just a snowy sabre cat in just a few hits? And am I supposed to be doing so little damage to it when I hit it? All I'm trying to do is get to the Pride of Tel Vos to do the Find the Helm of Winterhold quest that I got from the mages guild near the start really.

Playing on normal difficulty....

What am I missing here?

this is a side effect of the crappy leveling system.

That's what's supposed to happen when you run into a dangerous mob.

Don't you find that a very glib reply? Oversimplification doesn't solve the OP's issue or answer his question. Having a thing like this happen to a player is certainly possible given just about any leveling system

A single snowy sabre cat isn't a "mob".

Mob is slang for "Mobile OBject."

Derived from MMOs.

And yes, you're supposed to get beaten down by them when you're a low level. They're the toughest kind of sabre cat.

Your armor rating is FAR from the cap which means it isn't mitigating much. I don't delve into the hard number crunching but once you get it over the armor cap (it's a little less than 600), which you can do with light or heavy (light takes a little longer but doesn't weigh you down so much at the start), it makes a BIG difference the damage that comes in.

Don't take too much offense to this, but you should probably play the game more to criticize it. Not that you won't have things to criticize it for, because it has lots of shortcomings, but you'll know the right things to whine about :).

Level 15 is pretty low (even though it looks like it's more than a 5th of the way to the soft level cap, it's actually not, thanks to levelling being exponentially slower every so many levels). Steel armor is actually one of the weaker heavy armors in the game. Snowy sabre cats are pretty tough, since not everything is scaled to your level (or is scaled to within a certain range, unlike Oblivion, where everything is your level or "boss level").

Mob = Mobile OBject. Refers to an entity that can move, used colloquially to refer to enemies in a computer game.

Snowy Saber Cats are the incarnation of what happens when Mehrunes Dagon and Hircine have a kid. They exist for no purpose but to run you to ground and destroy you. Hate them, fear them, never show them mercy if you get the upper hand.

25 damage with a greatsword at level 15? I am going to say there is your problem.. You didn't add any perks to the Two handed or One handed tree, did you? A few levels in the increased damage perk really does make a difference, especially once you have improved and enchanted your weapons.

Saber cats are a tough enemy as well, they do a lot of damage. Your best bet is to not get hit of course... either by doing a lot of damage before it can maul you, or using a shield actively. When you run into an enemy that you can't kill quick with your two handed (my Nord warrior usually kills basic enemies with one swing. More powerful ones go down under 2-3 power attacks), grab your shield and one hander. Either wait for the enemy to swing at your shield and stagger themselves, then strike, or shield bash them, get in a couple of quick strikes and go back to blocking. It takes longer than a two handed weapon, and is less effective when facing multiple enemies, but against a strong single enemy, it is often the only way to survive long enough to beat them.

Also of course, keep potions handy for healing and don't be afraid to pause and chug a couple down. So long as you have potions and they aren't killing you in one hit, you shouldn't die that often.

Just let your companion tank it. My first roll through was as a sneak-archer. Second roll through is a sneak-archer with Lydia. Seems to work well but cave bears still svck.

1: Improve armour with smithing. Craft lots of iron daggers

2: get perks for these things because skills on their own do extremely little to improve your character (in fact, one perk in two handed and 15 skill is better than 100 with no perks)

3: saber cats and bears are easy. Game is balanced like this and logical

Well.. the armor rating of 100 isn't that great. A Snow Sabre Cat is VERY tough. And 3rd of all, if you're not getting armor percentage increase perks in your Heavy Armor/ Light Armor Classes, then you won't have a lot of armor. You'll be very mushy.

Work on smithing to increase armour rating and damage output.
Also still wearing steal armour at level 15, I use steal-plate armour at that level

its completely true, if he leveled up differently he wouldn't be having a problem right now. its not his fault, its a fault of the game, but that does not make it any less true.

Agreed with everything of this.. I've been playing Elderscrolls since I ever got my hands on one (Morrowind). I'm quite familiar with these kind of games and Ashya seems to know what he/she is talking about. I agreed with EVERYTHING Ashya said. Well done.

It would seem to me that he isn't investing in the Juggernaut perk like he should be. 100 armor rating is rather sad at level 40 heavy armor. Also you should be using something better than steel. Invest in the heavy armor smithing tree. That will get you good armor before you actually find it randomly even if you don't power level it. With 42 Heavy armor and a full set of orchish smithed to exquisite quality I am breaking the 300 armor mark.

Also a a reference, according to UESP wiki the displayed armor rating is also added to a hidden armor rating that is equivalent to 25 armor per piece of armor worn. So a full armor suit with a shield gives a 125 hidden armor rating

The damage reduction equation looks like this: (Displayed armor rating + Hidden armor rating) * .12

So if you had a displayed armor rating of 200 while wearing full armor with a shield the percent damage reduction would be calculated like this. (200+125) * .12 = 39% damage reduction

Hmmm. OK, cheers. Fair enough. This steel armor is the best I've found though. Didn't realise mob meant mobile whatever. See, I have no problem with bandits etc. Or other things in some dungeons I've been in. Just this frikkin snowy sabre cat really. Hell I killed a bunch of witches and that stupid Hagraven fairly easily tbh. Not a sabre cat though, oh no. Or a bear either.

I'll use some perks. I've currently got 1/5 Juggernaut in Heavy Armor, that's it. No perks used in two handed. Just 1/5 armsman in one handed. Got the steel smithing perk. Have spare 4 perks to use right now.
