What is the point of merging greaves and cuirass?

Post » Mon Jun 20, 2011 10:49 am

A few things before I start:
1. This is not a thread to discuss how greaves and cuirass have possibly been merged, this for discussion of what the point is.
2. No flaming others for their positions on things/no flaming what previous ES games have done with it.
3. Mods if you deem this worthy of being moved to an open thread just close it :)

So I keep hearing they have merged cuirass' and greaves for Skyrim. It was pretty well confirmed (at least imo) in the Ashley Cheng interview. But I must ask what is the point? Why merge them? I just don't see why it is possibly being done... I mean Beth saw the backlash of what happened when they removed pauldrons, separate gauntlets and clothes under armor for Oblivion, why did they think it a good to remove even more?

From what I've heard, to make putting on clothes EZ mode. Which is still a stupid argument, but whatevs.

Clipping issues, which is stupid because if they used proper cloth physics clipping would be non-existent.

Considering the look of the cuirass, I'd say pauldrons were merged with them, while greaves were merged likely with boots.

However, it's clear that this is to get more seamless looking armor than clippy as crap armor. Personally, mismatched clippy armor with next to impossible odds of completing a set until you've about worn out the character bothered the crap out of me.

My guess is to reduce clipping caused by the crafting system.

I really don't get it. I mean, if you REALLY don't want to mix your armour... don't...

If you ONLY want Steel, just buy steel. No one is forcing you to buy Fur or Iron or what-not. The price of a combined Chest/Greaves would be the exact same price/stats as seperate Chest/Greaves.

It really makes me mad that they're (maybe) combined.

Or was it confirmed?

To avoid clipping issues. That's all I can think of at the top of my head. However, I see more customization; Smithing will play a huge part in customizing gear, and in screenshots, it seems that there are different varients/looks of the same armor type, something Oblivion didn't have.

Here's an example: http://i.imgur.com/zeLTN.png
(Thanks to Luke Skyrimmer.)

Hope that helps. It's not all doom and gloom.

So much for not wanting things to clip......because theres still clipping observable in the trailer and game previews

God this game makes me rage inside.

what could have been fully customizable armor, paldrons, grieves, gauntlests boots, mismatching here and there WITH crafting customization becomes Armor....boots helm and Gautlets.

what could have been the ultimate representation of Magical prowess with dual wielding custom spells...meh im not gonna rant.

Clipping issues... I really hope that isn't the reason why because its pretty poor. Oh well I hadn't seen this new crafting system where you customize your armor, thanks The FriendlyBear.

Consoles still use 2005 technology. It doesn't matter what year it is.

Too bad your "solution" just spawned several issues.

You're working on dated hardware, and now you're pushing the hardware a lot harder, especially in populated areas.
Oh, then there's the issue that you now have a lot more effort to put into each piece of armor, and have to check/double/triple check everything to make sure interaction works.
Then there's the fact that's going to end up costing more money towards the development of the game.

Sure seems so easy when you're just [censored]ing and moaning, isn't it?

I really don't think there is an excuse for it. I'm still hoping that its been changed, Vsions has even mentioned that some forum feedback has changed a few things.

It's also not a true free flowing open world with complex AI and many other elements that TES games have.

True, but its already been mentioned that smithing could just allow you to change what the separate pieces in the "Armor" piece look like. I don't want to be forced to use the Smithing skill on every character if I want my armor to look different and more distinct, I should just be able to mix and match.

This looks hopeful. That armor on the left in that picture shows that not only was a leather backing added to the armor on the right, but a cauldron was added as well. Assuming the armor itself (cuirass & greaves,) is customizable along with however many helmets, gloves, and boots are found in game, Id be happy with the change. If armor only comes in different variants without customization options, I will be a little disappointed. Still, even that might prove to be a better system then Oblivion's basic 5 armor sets that don't exist until you reach a certain level. That was so fvcking stupid.

EDIT: Added a sentence so as not to confuse people.

To piss everyone off? :whistling:

Even though I would like to mix clothes and armor (which might still be possible), it's not a big loss. My favorite armor in Oblivion were the sets that you got like from the arena or Golden Saint armor.... but there were only three sets like that.

It's going to be part of the crafting system. You have to fit your armor. Which puts it as one piece into your armor selection

Im sure that there are smiths in game that can do that for you. It'll probably cost a bit of money, but I doubt it would be that expensive. That is assuming smithing will change the look of armor.
