What's the proper weapon for a mage ?

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 10:58 am

I mean you are out of mana, running around doing nothing feels a bit stupid when you can equip a weapon and do some damage. What weapon feels right to use as a mage ?

There are staves, but they don't act as weapons at all, more like wands. NPC mages use daggers, that's one option, but using the dagger for both attacking and defending ... you can't bind that to hotkeys and the range I assume is a bit too "in your face" dangerous. Then there are 2h weapons :) Sword is the fastest, that's probably the best option in that regard.

So what about it ? Should pure mages carry 2h sword or some other weapon around ?

From practical pov I feel like when fighting weak melee enemies the melee weapon can be a huge asset. Happened to me just a moment ago when I was fighting mage boss at the end of one dung ... failed like 5 times with pure magic just to give up and pick up an axe that was lying around and with it it was an easy job.

For me it would really depend.

A Restoration/Conjuration focussed mage would use Mace's or Warhammers ala DnD cleric.

A destruction/alteration focussed mage would use Axes or swords.

An illussionist would use daggers.

It is a real shame that staffs and staves still dont have a melee part to use them whent he charge runs out. It would be really satisfying to lamp an enemy over the head with a staff as a mage. Heh.

My own mage character uses his Axe of Whiterun atm. Heh.

Wrong game. Mana is in DA.

I don't run out of Magicka. I swing Dremora Lords. The best Duel Wielding in the game.

An enchanted dagger seems the most appropriate to me. I were a mage and backed into a corner with no magicka I'd pull out a nasty enchanted dagger on my enemy.

The problem is, mages shouldnt really ever be forced to use weapons.

With an epic enchanting skill you can make spells cost considerably less and regen a lot but you shouldnt be FORCED into enchanting to play a mage.

Mages need faster base regen/magicka...and regen during combat.

In the mean time just bash on them with a broom or use a dagger.

I found a 1 hand mace that I use. It's called Iron Mace of Souls and it fills a soul gem if a target dies within 3 seconds or something like that. Nice to use for an enchanter.

I use a dagger and a bow when need calls for them. If you prefer staying a little away from your enemies, a bow seems more elegant for a mage to use
compared to any blade. Keeps a squishy body away from sharp edges.

If this isn't a condemnation on Mage mechanics I don't know what is.

I agree that they should never be forced to wield weapons, however I disagree that they shouldn't be "forced" into enchanting. Enchanting is technically the mage crafting skill [smithing for melee and alchemy for thief/assassin] and should be utilized, however it's oddly both necessary but not as effective for mages as it is for other classes. IMO we should be able to enchant our known spells, enchant damage increases, and enchant staffs. It's silly to me that we can't.

Mace fits a crazy warlock better. But blades always have the edge in these games, because there are better unique swords, and the critical hit perk is a lot better than the ignore armor perks for maces.

I found the best use of staves is to give them to Lydia. She uses them just right. She has the Staff of Zombies and a few others and I keep seeing Lydia's Cave Bear or Lydia's Troll and there was Lydia's Elk too. I've taken to using a Bound Sword lately with a Sheild that resists frost. It's working fine so far and I have the Soul Stealer perk so I think the Bound Sword grabs the soul. My character is a Battlemage/Healer so it fits right in.

When I'm out of Magicka I run like hell! I have a nasty little blade for back up, but from experience my 100 health mage is useless in a stand up fight. I also tend to use my shouts as a last resort.

After giving it some thought I will go with a dagger or 1h sword. It's not the best idea to engage head on with a warrior, but archers and mages ... why not :)

Gandalf (in the movie) was not a wizard he had some light and a damn sword. :verymad:

That light is strong enough to blind and repel servants of Sauron and worshipers of Melkor. Gandalf can also summon lightning, fire, create force fields and blasts that can destroy legions of enemies (much larger and stronger than the on the bridge of khazad-dum).

Maybe in the book, but I speak of the movie version. He did a few tricks but I wanted more, its been years and i am still not over it.
