So, what's the purpose of food in Skyrim?

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 12:38 am

Used to be that food was ingredients in previous TES games.
Now you can only cook and those stews don't really strike me as powerful.

Am I missing some 100 levels in cooking skill?

It's pretty useless when they weigh either the same as potions or more, and their effects are far less effective. Now if they had a hardcoe mode like NV you would have a reason for having food.

Immersion and role playing. These words make up the "bible" of RPGs, especially TES.

Looks like a leftover thing from Bethesda trying to add a "hardcoe" mode....and failing.

It's pretty much there for those who want to use it. Basically its for the more role-playing type of people.

^^^ Definitely.

Also, a couple food items are actually useful, like Elsweyr Fondue.

Or they could be saving hardcoe mode for DLC who knows.

I would have liked a cooking skill and the higher your level, the more complivated foods you could cook and they healed more....

Oh woe is me.

Are you guys telling me I'll never become a level 50 Daedric Chef?

How could Bethesda turn it's back on...

Nah, I'm just kidding.

Cooking is a nice little RPG addition in "Skyrim".

It is worthless. The only thing that makes food worth something is a New Vegas style hardcoe mode. But putting that in the game would be too obvious, especially since New Vegas did it. They can't make obvious improvements. Just make it shinier!

I think regen health doesn't help the food usage either. Having a food bar or something like NV hardcoe mode, would be more effective with the use of Food. I wish someone would make a mod to remove H.Regen.

Not everyone roleplays and pretends to be a part of the world they are playing in. Food is useless. They give you very little health especially in the higher levels. Eating food should regen health slowly for at least a few hours. Either that or they should make a hunger system like Minecraft so that food actually has a use.

Not everyone likes that they must eat all the time. There is lots of thing many people don't do in a game. Cooking is great addition for RP in skyrim.

I don't see why. The result of said cooking is pretty lame. Certainly far form doing alchemy. And I must say I don't really like fiddling with those menus either.

I can't remember, but is doing cooking tied to any skills? What about people who want 'something', but don't want to gain actual alchemy skills?

Also, for some of the arguments against in: Not everyone role plays with magic, therefore magic is useless,... Great logic isn't it?

Best would be to wait for a mod made by a some unofficial modders.

That way you dont have to download it, but you can if you like. Easy as pie.

Cheap healing, I cram down like 5 bowls of soup at once sometimes when I want to save potions. Sure, they are a little on the heavy side considering how many you have to use to be effective, but they are much cheaper than potions. On my new character I usually carry some around, this guy uses light armor so his weight is lower. And if I need to escape with some loot, I have no problem eating all my extra food since they are so easily replaced and not worth as much as potions.

Cooking in it's own is a pretty useless business.
It does however provide a pretty good platform for Modders to expand on.

It's mostly there for flavour

Seriously though, you've always had food in TES games, the cooking part is new though, it should be really easy for modders to work with, looking forward to hunger mods.
