My only advice is to get there before Level 17. You'll level up a few times while you're there and by Level 20, it's a nightmare. Around level 12-13 would probably be good. You want to have a good combat skill and having Science at 75 will net you a very nice unique weapon.

it depends on your equipment. right now i am there and am using the chinese stealth armor. now if you manage to get hold off firelance, a rare event, doing that spaceship will be a lot easy as you can get more ammo on the ship.

save the game before the ship beams you up and bring stealth boys and your best equipment.

I started it at like level 24 and I survived. It was really hard at times, but not impossible. One of the NPCs can repair your equipment to 100% which comes in handy.

I do wish I had better Science skill, I missed out on a lot, unfortunately. For the next play through, I guess!

Would you do it again, Skirt? I've gone through there twice at level 30 and I'll never do it again. It's just no fun.

Spoiler
I had one glitchy alien who survived 5000 in damage. Jerk!

Sneaky players can reverse-pickpocket grenades onto the aliens for instant kills regardless of their shielding.

At the risk of blowing my own trumpet, PC players might like to try these mods: http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10975 http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11008 - which restore the 'ignore resistance' attributes to the Microwave Emitter and Deathclaw Gauntlet. A sneak crit from the modified emitter is instant death to any alien.

That would have made me so angry!

I would do it again because I feel like I missed something about the whole experience. I thought I found all the "recordings" but I still just don't "get" it. For example:
Spoiler
what is the deal with Sally? She's 200 years old, but hasn't aged? Did I miss something...? I expected her to be an alien leading me directly into a trap, to be honest. Also, random samurai is random, though hilarious.

I think stuff like that is one of the main reasons why so many people were disappointed by MZ. They could have done so much more to make it an interesting story, add back story and depth to it, and such. Instead it's nothing more than a run n' gun through wave after wave of generic aliens, and as mentioned, they're such bullet sponges when you're high level that it's no fun beating on them.

Some of the recordings are kind of funny or tragic, but they felt like they were only there to allow the player to pick up another achievement, and didn't really add much else at all to the story.

Spoiler
I assume the aliens must have stuffed her in a cryo-pod for 50 years each time she escaped. She thaws out, wriggles through a duct, explores the ship being a PITA for a couple days and back in the freezer she goes.

This. At level 30 (Assuming BS is active) the aliens are practically impossible :P Likewise for a level 1-5, it would be to easy, to get the most out of the DLC I'd say 12-15, like ghouls said, is probably the best.

Ohhhhhh we're using Imagination Power! I can do that. I only played through it the once, which was literally last week, and assumed I just missed something while trying to stay alive. I thought the aliens were particularly difficult but didn't think that was a scaling thing. Should'a known.

Spoiler
I like your theory, she is the only child on board. Maybe their cryo process is optimal for advlts but for kids with higher metabolisms it just isn't as effective.

I had a fairly tough time at level 26. I didn't have the heavy incinerator, just a 100% condition flamer plus 100 skill Big Guns, and got my butt kicked pretty badly...though I survived. I picked up guns along the way and found the Drone Cannon to be pretty useful for the end fight.

I'm there now at level 14 with a melee character. I don't want to be there but I have to play through the stinking thing to get to the awesome mod I do want to play. I modded up a special alien-killing sword just for Zeta that does over 850 in damage. Thought that would make things a breeze. I just met a bubble-headed (not shielded) alien who took three hits to kill. Three hits. Level 14. Little grey [censored] :verymad:

Whenever I play it I just use the alien weapons I pick up from my kills. I'll send Dogmeat into the crash site to pick up the Alien Blaster and the power cells, use that to capture my first Disintegrator, and then use that until I can get to the Cargo Hold and get my hands on the Novasurge. Even using the Disintegrator through the whole ship I'll usually leave with around 6,000 alien power modules.

The Experimental Drone Cannon you get in the Weapons Lab is pretty useful, but I find the regular Drone Cannons to be pretty near useless, except they do fetch lots and lots of caps back in the Wasteland. In fact, that's about all I use any of the alien weapons for once I complete MZ. The only MZ weapon I'll really use afterward is the Novasurge. As far as weapons go, the ones you get in The Pitt and O:A are way, way better. IMO, of course.

I've done it out the vault, but obviously levelled up a few times making my way to the crash site. The key for me at low levels is using the alien weoponry against them - though this does work well at any level I found, even at 30.

If you want some extra 'security' then try doing operation anchorage straight out the vault, get the chinese stealth armor and you'll be sneak critical shooting your way through the aliens with no problems.

Without spoiling too much, it might be an idea to arange or lead your crewmates into dangerous situations to see what kit they have to loot as well :)

One problem I had at low levels was not being able to repair armor once up there becasue I hadn't built up enough caps in time, and expect to level up a lot, even on easy settings you will get a ton of xp!

Poop. I'm level 17 now (or is it 18?). When I finally get there I'll probably be a level or two higher. This will be my first time through, so I think I will be getting my butt handed to me. *gulp*

I currently have over 200 Stimpacks (I don't purchase them, so any I have are from looting). I have rarely used them due to my character having the Cannibal Perk. I will make sure I don't use up to many of them.

Well, it turns out I was Level 17...but I am now Level 19. I gained two levels in OA, and I still haven't finished it yet! As Shaggy is wont to say.... "Yoinks!"

You'll gain a bunch when you do start MZ. On my last XBox run through it, I went from just hitting 17 at the start to being halfway to 23 by the time I had finished it (I was playing on Hard). I definitely noticed a difference in the number of tougher enemies when I hit Level 19 or so.

If they're too much for you you can always turn the difficulty level down to Easy or even Very Easy, but you really shouldn't have too much trouble with them. Just be prepared to dish out a lot of damage because they'll soak up a lot.

I have a large AP, so that should help. I have a 10 Agility, Ledoux's Hockey Mask, Ranger Combat Armor, and the Action Girl Perk. I can get 6 shots off in VATS with the Xuanlong Assault Rifle, and 5 shots off with the Combat Shotgun. I think I may go to Evergreen Mills and get the Terrible Shotgun first.

Is there a way to make the Level Cap ABOVE 30(via console command)?

There's no such console command that I'm aware of, but I've seen mods on the Nexus that raise the level cap beyond 30. I've never used any of them myself, so I can't tell you how they work
