What's the thing you hate the most with Beth games

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 2:33 pm

I voted Leveling, mainly because you're limited to only your major skills to level up.
As far as glitches I have never encountered any major ones, aside from the occasional freezing whilst activating weather.
Also freezing while you're riding your horse, on the water with 100 speed added for 120 seconds. :P

Though the voice could be better of course, more voices, but remember that was oh four years ago.

Three things; none are up there:

1) Zealotry: most games probably have their share of crazed fans, those whose blood boils at the tiniest deviation from cannon, or those who are adament that their opinon is the one right way. Howver, the arguing gets tiresome.

2) Hype: probably my disdain in general for marketing; you must buy our Thneed, and we'll string you along with teasers until you do!

note: items one adn two can make for some entertaining reads here, so not all is bad with that...

3) Lack of developer-player conversation: I don't mean as in Ask teh Dev's thread, or tech/mod help, etc. Perhaps I'm looking back with rose-colored glasses to the old Bioware BG/BG2 days, but while there's evidence that plaer suggestions are taken, it's as if the players are just talking into a black hole. No asking for elaboration, no asking for opinion, etc.

Eh, guess that's it.

I'm happy with everything else, so I voted for tech issues. Even with tech issues, it wasn't their fault. Seriously, I'm really happy with last two beth games (FO3/Ob) in practically every way.

Where is the choice for blue Eye of Night?

I would probably have to pick animation. Sometimes it is just too choppy, with characters glitching all over the place. That is what breaks my suspension of disbelief the most.

The bugs.
That Bethesda can release a game with show stopper bugs, and then release patches which fix the vanilla show stoppers but introduce new and MORE bugs, is bad enough.
That Bethesda then has the sheer effrontery and gall to walk away from fixing their mess, and leave it up to the modding community to do the job of Bethesda in fixing the bugs, that is a thing worth hating bethesda for.

Hard choice since I, like several others, don't really hate anything. That being said, I picked sound for the voice acting. I also wish we could go back to the days of Morrowind where even random NPC's had a lot more things to say (just general information about the town, local landmarks, etc), and from the little exposure that I've had to Daggerfall, that seemed pretty neat too. But I don't hate it. They're quality games, and if ES: V turns out to be as good as Oblivion, I'll be happy (happier if it's more like Morrowind, but I won't hold my breath).

The animation could use some more work, but I can't say I really care all that much.

The other choice for me would be the storyline. Between the two, I love Morrowind's story over Oblivion's by far. Not just the main storyline, but all of the side stuff Morrowind had going on as well: the quest-lines in the Great Houses and guilds were interesting and just far deeper than in Oblivion. Bloodmoon (and to a lesser extent, Tribunal) made a far more interesting expansion for Morrowind than SI did for Oblivion (though I certainly did enjoy SI).

Morrowind is my favorite video/computer game. I've never had anything come close to my love for that game (modded, of course :D), though Oblivion certainly went a good distance along the same path. If ES V (hopefully it will be made soon, and NOT an MMO) would have the depth of Morrowind, graphics like Oblivion, FO3, or FO:NV (or better would be good as well). For me, Morrowind is to video games as Tolkien's world of Arda (Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, etc) is to fantasy literature. The depth of Tolkien's world is outstanding far and above anything else I've ever read, and I just keep going back. It's the same way with Morrowind for me.

Player animation. Creatures tend to be animated fine, but for some reason we can never have a good NPC/PC animation system. Even though there where some pretty well done animations for similar creatures. (Dagoth Ur's run animation, Xivilai)

Second biggest hate isn't exactly bug support, but the amount of bugs in the game to start. Every Bethesda game is riddled with bugs on release. Though, it's quite forgivable with such huge worlds.

I voted for animation. Personly I play the game third person, and I really am fine with the first person option. I often use it when looking through a room and archery, but otherwise always third person. This really shows how poorly the walking animations are done however, especially when walking up or down stairs or other elevations. Its also looking horrible when NPC's do this. During dialogue there is no animation at all aside from the most basic facial expressions.

Combat animations arent anything special either. A supposed master swordsman is not performing any moves that I cant do myself with a sword. I would like to see different styles of combat. Like being able to choose a style such as a focused and controlled style. a wild and brutish style and a sneaky style. A noble knight would wield a sword differently than a barbarian would after all.

But there are also some other things not listed that annoy me.

Not having mounted combat in Oblivion might be my worst annoyance. Why even have horses if you cant fight on horseback? Bioware made a fool out of Bethesda when they implemented mounted combat and horses into Neverwinter Nights for free through a patch. Thats pretty much Bioware's way of flipping both Bethesda and Obsidian (who promised horses in NWN2 and didnt deliver) the bird.

But I am confident that Bethesda will not make that mistake again since its likely one of the most common complaints about Oblivion aside from it being dumbed down rather badly from Morrowind by removing many skills, weaponry, armor/clothing customization and throwing in a terrible story.

Sorry if all that sounds rather harsh, but the topic is about what we hate about bethesda games.

Like the vast majority of people already, I hate the poor Animations of virtually all Elder Scrolls games. Honestly, it seems to get relativistically worse with each game. Morrowind's animation today, can be said to be terrible, but in it's contemporary market, it was a healthy C+ in quality. Now, the bad animation sticks out to the point of removing the player from the world at times. I don't know it's limitations with Gamebryo, or if Bethesda just doesn't have any remarkable animators, I just know that it's horrible, and new benchmarks of animation quality need to be set for the animators (assuming non-technical limitations) for the next game.

Surprised at the leveling system hate, my only issue with the Elder Scrolls leveling system is the attribute multipliers, I believe they should be influenced by your major (or minor, if applicable) skills, regardless of being used or not. It would make the player still progress in the direction they want, without being overly aware of the games mechanics, also mana should also increase like Health, maybe at a lower rate before racial bonuses. It is annoying not getting three 5x and feeling you missed something. I'd personally change it so that "Specialization" has a stack of attributes, and all attributes in that stack automatically get a 2x multiplier available every level (With the standard 3-token raise system intact) and if you have a specialization and three skills related to an attribute, you get a 3x multiplier to that attribute only. This would make racial differences much more significant, as well as increase the allure of "over-leveling" by making attributes a rare commodity, rather than an incessant annoyance and reminder of the game mechanics, maybe I'll dive deeper into that in a true suggestions post sometime later.

Kind of an odd question to me honestly...I am a fan of their games...So I dont hate anthing about them...obviously no one likes bugs but I have never encountered any true bugs that ruined the game for me...a freeze here and there doesnt bother me...but basically if I chose anyone of those...It would seem kind of dumb for me to have ever posted here...

Heres what I hate...the extremely long wait for TESV..and if it turns out to be an MMO I will truly hate them if thats the case...

here here

I can't say i "hate" anything either but I dislike the level system in Morrowind/Oblivion, I mean it is do able and fine but I just dislike how long it takes you to offically level up

Hear hear!

The number of bugs present to begin with.

The number of those bugs fixed by modders within an hour of release- proving they could have been fixed in an hour before the game was sent for mass production if Bethesda could be arsed to take that hour.

The number of those bugs apparently given the "the community already fixed it, so why should we waste any time on it?" treatment. (Which could also fairly be called the "PC modders fixed it themselves, so [censored] the console players anyway" treatment.)

I hate how they drop you off into an open world with no linear structure, honestly. If they removed that from the series, it'd be purely epic!

The UI. It was designed to be viewed on a TV from way across the room but seen close up at high resolutions on a computer monitor it looks horribly cartoony.

And those tabs. And tabs within tabs. It's enough to give a healthy person carpel tunnel syndrome, navigating through all those tabs. Oblivion's menu system is the worst menu system in any game I've ever played. I really hope they develop a decent one for TES V.

Also the symbols that aren't memorable, even after a zillion hours of play, drive me nutty. At least the inventory works tho, unlike some other games.

Not sure which option this should fall under, but I hated the 'levelled lists for everything' approach in TES4. Going into caves had zero meaning because all loot you'd find was levelled and no chance at finding something special (like the Mentor's Ring near Seyda Neen in TES3; which was the happiest day of my level 1 character). Bandits were levelled and came at you in full Ebony armor when you were level 20. Prized Daedric Artifacts and relics of ancient times? Levelled 1-5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-20... :(

That basically sums it up for me. Too many levelled lists in an open world singleplayer game experience where exploration and combat did not yield its occassional reward (because the whole world just levelled up with you). Fortunately they put the handplaced loot and rare items back in Fallout 3; for which I am forever grateful since that gave me back my will to explore... ;)

I would like to know exactly why everyone doesnt like TES's leveling system, is it level scaling (which I personally dislike) or is it the actual leveling part its self.
