What's the thing you hate the most with Beth games

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 5:37 pm

So while we're all rabid Beth fans, either TES or Fallout, what is the one thing that you really dislike with Beth games. I'm going to say the animation because despite the beefs I have with the voice actors, or the fact that they're going with small DLC's rather than full fledged expansions, the animation bugs me to no end. Hopefully they will improve on this for TES5

Your thoughts?

Oh, I added leveling. Sorry to all those who already voted!

Morrowind and Oblivion's leveling system

Honestly, that's something I hate more than almost all other things. Attribute multipliers make me want to throw my beloved games out of the window, sometimes.

From your poll choices, I chose bug support/technical issues.

Kind of an odd question to me honestly...I am a fan of their games...So I dont hate anthing about them...obviously no one likes bugs but I have never encountered any true bugs that ruined the game for me...a freeze here and there doesnt bother me...but basically if I chose anyone of those...It would seem kind of dumb for me to have ever posted here...

Heres what I hate...the extremely long wait for TESV..and if it turns out to be an MMO I will truly hate them if thats the case...

The UI. It was designed to be viewed on a TV from way across the room but seen close up at high resolutions on a computer monitor it looks horribly cartoony.

And those tabs. And tabs within tabs. It's enough to give a healthy person carpel tunnel syndrome, navigating through all those tabs. Oblivion's menu system is the worst menu system in any game I've ever played. I really hope they develop a decent one for TES V.

It will not be an MMO, and I really need to put that in my signature.

Hate is a strong word. I don't hate any one thing about any of their games. There are things I dislike, of course, but not hate.

Animations could be a lot better.

Voice acting, if they insist on using it, could be a lot better.

RPG elements could be better.

Story could be better.

But I don't hate any of those things.

For me it was a toss up between animations, voice acting and bug fixing.

Bug fixing can be solved by mods (it's better not to have this reliance though).

My only real dislike towards the voice acting is the lack of variety. So this can be solved by hiring more voice actors.

Finally animations. They are... clunky. Lets just put it that way.

I agree with Antibody, I don't hate anything in any BGS game that I've played (so not any of the Terminator games or IRHA or Where's Waldo, basically just ES and Fallout)

I was going to say that I wanted the combat system from Oblivion to be improved, but then I realized that the system itself wasn't bad, it just needed more animations to be more pleasing visually.

I guess I'm going to have to go with animations then.

Voice acting. If they are gonna insist on using it,they could at least get more people instead of like 7.

Story line/cinematics

"You've defeated the huge and powerful Daedric god Mehrunes Dagon and saved us all from certain destruction! The empire thanks you. Turn up to the prison in a week and we'll give you some armour or something. Later dude."

Though a suit of armor is a bit better than a ring that lets you see in the dark.

I don't "hate" anything about their games. Out of your options I would say the animations could be better... Other than that I'm a happy camper.

Hmm... Its weird how everyone dislikes the voice actors. I mean, its not Uncharted 2, but the voice work is solid. Although, yes it does lack in variety.

Animation is my choice though. But... I do find it funny how bad they are

Beth has never been good with animations. I don't hate them, but it would be nice to see them improved.

Im still no fan of voice acting, even with FO:NV which improved on it. Wasted disk space if you ask me. Gimme back the plethora of flavorful text that adds to the life and story of the game.

From the poll I have chossen the bug support. Mods can change lots of things, but sometimes it takes a lot of work to solve a bug the devs could remove in a much simpler way. What I really do miss in both Oblivion and Morrowind is the feeling of epicness. I have a feeling that Beth can do the lower and middle tires of society well, but the achelons just lack something. In Morrowind I was just depresed to see the mages' guild houses. They were so plain, the mages in that game looked like any other guild. Does this builing belong to the guild of carpenters? No, this is mages' guild! That was sad. In oblivion at least the arcane university tried to look good, although it did fail quite a lot too. And don't even start me on the imperial palace and imperial council. The things that should look luxurious an be expensive often looked very cheap and they usually were cheap. That is a mistake as far as I'm concerned and it really does break the immersion.

Out of the games I've played developed by Bethesda (Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3) I don't really "hate" anything, Hell they all make it in to the top 20 games I've played... and I've played a lot. I find a lot of things I do not like about them however mostly with Oblivion and Fallout because they've started trying to gear it towards console gamers more than PC gamers which I find incredibly stupid.(Biased since I'm in mostly a PC gamer)

But if I had to pick something that I disliked the most it would be the dialog system in both Oblivion and Fallout 3 (Very close to hate on this one for many many reasons) I think they'd be better off going back to a Morrowind type system.

Ever since Morrowind, I'v always hated how, if I want to run at an angle, I just end up moonwalking.

Um glitches? I worked really hard in vampires cure quest just to find out it wouldn't work unless I had a European version of Oblivion GOTY.

They really need to rethink their leveling systems, but nothing else I hate. However, I voted for story line. It is not bad though, it could just be less... over the top.

They didn't develop that, they published it. :whisper:

Things I want eradicated from future Bethesda games:
  • Crappy animations. Even as far back as Arena, Bethesda's never been particularly good in this department. At the very least, make animation replacers easier to develop.
  • Level scaling. I liked the scaled human enemies in Arena and Daggerfall, and the occasional list in Morrowind alongside static spawns was nice. But both Oblivion and Fallout 3 had it completely wrong.
  • SpeedTree. It's lazy and typically looks like crap. New Vegas has some very good examples of how nice the old fashioned "textured leaves on sticks" approach works, kind of like the vanilla meshes in Morrowind. The difference being that with today's computing power, you can have a far denser amount of branches/leaves that ultimately make for a superior alternative to SpeedTree.
  • The interface. Daggerfall and Morrowind were fairly close to perfection (aside from the 4-item inventory and messy journal, respectively) but the interfaces in Oblivion and Fallout 3 just make me rage. Tabs are cool, eh? Much more proprietary than windows and full screen popups. Oh wait, the tab pages are tabbed?
  • Voice acting. It's nice from time to time, but it also greatly eats up the budget and development time of the games. Give me back the lengthy conversations from Morrowind and the dark, descriptive location prose from Daggerfall ("you see tracks"). Did wonders for the game.

It would have to be the horrid interface. Even after years of fighting it I have never grown comfortable with the beast. It simply screams console and I truely hate it. I hope that Bethesda can come up with a better compromise if they insist on a single interface across all platforms. The scaling and levelling system bring up the rear.

Yeah I really hope they go back to the interface they had in Morrowind (but not the journal). It was so much easier to deal with my inventory with the interface in Morrowind than it is in Oblivion or Fallout 3. But considering Morrowind's interface would probably be a little slow to navigate with a controller, it'd be nice if we got a separate interface for PC and consoles, designed specifically for the platform they're on.
