What things are you going to miss from Morrowind

Post » Tue Nov 09, 2010 10:00 am

Those are only opinions though. Just like I think Daggerfall is the best in the series I also prefer Oblivion over Morrowind. Morrowind is my least favorite although that's not saying I don't enjoy it. It's all subjective. I think Skyrim will be the best of the best.

Sadly all I remember of Daggerfall is the demo i had as a kid. Never owned the full game. Morrowind was my first true experience with TES, and I loved it.

Atmosphere, Music, the sense of being alone in the wilderness, the Deadric armor's looks, Dunmer before they sounded like fairies, the neat little pockets with hidden treasure spread throughout the world, Medium Armor (yes thats right) no level scaling, deep stories. For me I think Morrowind can't be beat, but thats only because it was my first video game on PC and it was my first RPG and I loved it and was engrossed in it like nothing else i had played. R.I.P Morrowind :violin:

The question is not what you liked the most or what you fear about Skyrim. It's about what things you are going to miss from Morrowind.

I comment to point out to people that they have little-to-no base for their assumptions. Bethesda has said they acknowledge how Oblivion lost a lot of what made Morrowind special, they said Skyrim is going back to a more Morrowind-style of adventure, they're putting in a carriage-fast-travel system similar to Morrowind's silt-strider. They are, in general, capturing a lot of what Oblivion lost from Morrowind, yet all of those things have been mentioned in this thread as what people will miss from Morrowind come Skyrim.

It's like they're not even giving it a chance.

People just like to complain. In the real world, it's innocent until proven guilty. In here it's guilty until proven innocent...repeatedly...in an uncertain number of threads...for an uncertain number of days.

Unless the game in question is Morrowind, than it's just innocent until forever.

*The interesting culture
*Not being held in the hand all the time
*The darker, more mature approach
*The morrowind guilds like Morag Tong and great houses
*Weird crazy items like Boots of blinding speed (if they decide to keep the more balanced approach of Oblivion)
*Unnoticable level scaling
*Spears and crossbows

I'm sure there's something more but that's what i can come up with from the top of my head.

What will I miss? Cliffracers.
No, not really -- I hated those things, and I can only hope that dragons won't be their newest incarnation. I'm not sure what we'll be having in Skyrim, so I'll just go by what I missed from Morrowind to Oblivion. Chief of these things will be the hand-placed artifacts. Eleidon's Ward and the Dragonbone Cuirass stand out most distinctly of the hidden artifacts, but I also enjoyed hunting down the three Daedric faces. I'll also miss the truly unique places, both cities and tombs, that made Morrowind so interesting. There were, I believe, five distinct cultures that inhabited Vvardenfell, and thank the Nine Divines that the devs are making an effort to bring cultural differences back into the game. Caves and tombs too will be getting a makeover to be more unique -- though I hope they'll create something to match the splendor of Tukushapal.

Edit: And after looking it up, Tukushapal is a Nordic tomb . . . They'd better have something better in the home of the Nords!

Until we know ALL the features of Skyrim, this is a pretty unfair thread.

Ken Rolston, the beautiful world design, the credit given to the players' ability to solve things on their own and the solid rpg mechanics.

You miss the fast travel system? You mean silt striders? It's been confirmed for months that carriages are in game ;)

I have a game for some of you - see if you can actually answer the question posed without slagging another game in the series. You know "I will miss this and such because I really liked it" instead of "I won't miss it because the game svcked." The other thread suffered from this as well.

Personally I can't answer the question - I don't know how Skyrim will play yet to say what I might or might not miss from prior games in the series. I'll just wait and see.

The combat and skill mechanics I miss the most. I liked the old-school RPG feeling it had to it. Though needless to say it could be a bit more refined.

I miss how the journal felt like an actual journal. It even occasionally had snarky comments in it! For instance, in the journal entries for that one quest delivering messages for a couple orcs near Caldera, your character writes down how he/she felt like they were getting Dumber by even interacting with those orcs. I miss the snarkiness.

Levitation, jump, slowfall, teleportation, sanctuary, lock.
Partial voice acting, Im not a fan of full voice acting.
Not being held by the hand.
No minigames that rely on real life skills, but skill checks that rely on character skill.
Classes, birthsigns, attributes.
Spellmaking.
Many, many types of weapons, armour and clothing.
So many skills that you could choose a different skillset each time for years on end.

Off the top of my head:

Proper Dunmer voice
spears
crossbows
throwing knives, stars, darts, etc.
open cities
Acrobatics
Athletics
Armour slots (pauldrons, separate gloves, etc.)
Spear, blunt, axe, short blade, long blade, unarmoured, mysticism skills
levitation
high fantasy art content
better writing
in depth quests & lore not limited to being voiced
more unique items
themes of prophecy, free will, prejudice, corruption, immortality, triumph of individual, homosixuality, religion, existentialism, etc (Oblivion had comparatively little of this)
amount of factions (Morag Tong, Vampire Clans)
ingesting scrap metal

Edit:
Spellmaking
layered armour & clothing
Birthsigns
