What is this weird sound at night...?

Post » Thu May 10, 2012 5:00 am

OK I did use the search... but couldn't find a thread dealing with this..

So here it is with the radio off... The following will happen.
- It's no music
- It's not around graveyard.
- To my knowledge it can happen anywhere....

What is it...?
Well it is this... At night (and to my knowledge only at night) one can hear this really weird sound.. I don't know how to to describe it...It is a sort of high tech screeching and whaling.
It is no animal... but a sort of repeating UFO sound...
Now if it is music.. It is one of the creepiest minimal music pieces ever written... But for me it sounds like ambient sound... What the hell is it... It has been bugging me for nearly 1,5 years..

I think I know what you mean OP, that sound that sounds like someone put a cat through an autotuner or something? To me it almost sounds like some kind of weird cellphone chirp.

I can't help but think of the dog being tossed in the blender, but I don't think that's it. Is this sound in F1/F2?

I know what you mean, and I believe it's ambiance. Really creepy ambiance.

Perhaps it was intentional, or perhaps it was a bug and Obsidian just said "[censored], that's creepy... leave it."

Like I said I have encountered it (occasionally) everywhere. From the serenity of Goodsprings to the Outskirts of Vegas...

This is indeed one of the best ways to describe it..

I agree it is ambiance... but what is making this sound....? I doubt it's a bug though... or... it was ambient sound connected to a WW encounter which will occasionally trigger in every game. and in all area's.

I'm thinking it's caused by the ambient music that plays near desert settlements at night. There are three peices of music called Desert Settlement Night Low, Medium, and High. Try listening to those on you tube and see if any of them match the sound you're describing.

I don't know, I've heard the noise in buildings, with RNV on. I think it's a sound effect that plays every now and then. I've been in old abandoned office buildings and heard it in dead silence.

I wondered if you ment the sound by graves but seems not. Fallout games in general have a few ambience tracks that send shivers to me as well. Morgan does wonders, Zur hasn't been bad.

It could be the corporate ruins ambient music, or it could be a sound effect like the talking/bustling city type of sound effect that plays in Freeside.

None of the soundtracks mentioned fit the bill
As for the ambient sounds: It's not a sound like the freeside "pvssyr"
It is also not the "breathing sound" near graves...
All I can say it's like a sound effect from one of these fifties Sci Fi movies.. Oh well People mention it in comments on Youtube as well, yet no one seems to have uploaded an example ... Well my search for the illusive sound continues.. On a side note.. It never seems to trigger in DLC's so it must be part of the ambient sound package in vanilla NV.

I thought I'd see if I could find it, by extracting the ambient sounds from the BSA then listening to the most likely ones in Audacity. I thought I knew of the sound, but I don't think I do, now.
Going by the descriptions here two freakyish ones I listened to were distant nightstalkers and centaurs. But, they're not only around of a night.

There's http://www.ladymoiraine.com/forum/gallery/22/2020-190312053723.jpeg (list on left-hand side). Maybe I'll just listen more carefully next time I'm playing, rather than go through them one by one.

The oddest sound I've heard out in the desert at night is that one that sounds like someone slamming a door and knocking a pile of tin cans over. Never quite understood what that was all about.

To me it sounds like ancient electric towers in the desert winds.

Maybe it's ghosts.

At night and near places were dead people are or people died, there is a creepy ghost sound, and voices. More at night but sometimes in the day.
Go near a grave or headstone, and you'll hear it.
It occurs near all kinds of items.
It also occurs in the middle of the desert, at night.
There are a lot of ghosts in the MW, lol.

It's definately meant to be there.

It's also possible you games being wierd and sound files have freaked out.

But it's more likely to be the creepy ghost noises.

Is the sound in this desert wind track? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8DeiSDAiAc

Now I'm curious. I'm going to have to check this out myself later.

Oh, cool, thanks for the list. Didn't even think to look there. I sometimes hear a plane flying overhead, but there never is one. So, I guess it's the distant helicopter sound. lol

@ OP: Hmm, I have to spent the night outside and see if I can pick up that sound! I'm curious now.
