I am trying to find out the game that would have been in the board game area.. but itself was not a board game... it was some sort of orb I think with some marbles in the center with a bunch of skewer like rods each person had to pull out by turn...

something like a jenga, but with sticks that would let loose all the marbles..

does anyone know what this game was?

Yep. Had it, hated it.

Yep, there were a couple of those that came out. I remember one was more of sphere, but that was kind of dumb as all the rods tilted down, so the balls rolled to the center. I think the worst part about the game was putting all the sticks back in each time you wanted to play.
