What was the first quest you did in TES IV?

Post » Thu Oct 21, 2010 9:58 pm

You all might have to do some thinking back to answer this.

Do you remember the first time when you came out the prison sewers, after seeing the good king Uriel Septim VII die? WHat was your reaction? What did you do next? What was the first quest you undertook?

I remember that magical moment like it was yesterday. I stepped out of the sewers, having confirmed my stars were right and my profession was apt. There I stood, gawking at the beautiful morning it was. And I was unsure where I was to go. This was the first TES game I had played, so the concept of do whatever, go wherever was just baffling to me. I walked out on the dock and stared. I looked to the left and right banks, and stared in puzzlement. It was almost too good to be true that I could go anywhere, without a guide pointing me or dictating where to go. Finally decided to take a swim and started heading towards the west. I beached near the village of Aleswell, and was greeted by some mud crabs, followed by *bizarre* unseen creatures (those invisible creatures from Ancotar's experiments in the Zero Visibility quest). And yes, the first quest I did was Zero Visibility. Magical.

It was unabashed love from day one.

What's your story?

I had been (and continue to be) addicted to Morrowind so I had a good idea how TES games worked. Once free of the sewers I resolved to take my time and just see what the world threw at me.

It was late afternoon when I went through the gate to the Market District. I was immediately accosted by a beggar named Simplicia the Slow. I gave her a coin because she just looked and sounded so pathetic, and then I continued to walk through the district. I stopped in a shop called the Copious Coinpurse to sell everything that I had picked up in the sewers to a bosmer named Thoronir. He was a pleasant enough fellow, and we got along pretty well. At the gate leading to Green Emperor Way I encountered an orc named Luronk gro-Glurzog. He asked me if I could spare a few septims, but he didn’t look like a beggar. I gave him three because, as I told him, I had plenty to spare (at the time I thought that 400 septims was ‘plenty’). He proceeded to tell me about a corrupt Imperial Watch Captain named Audens Avidius. After some injudicious bribing of a merchant named Jensine (who kept trying to steer the conversation toward investigating my new friend Thoronir), a Watch Captain named Itius Hayn (ironic since I was investigating Imperial Corruption), a redguard named Ruslan, and the aforementioned Luronk (whose money troubles were ended based on how much I gave him), I had finally coerced enough people to act on the charges against Avidius. I was present when Itius Hayn placed him under arrest and escorted him forthwith to the very dungeons from which I had escaped the day before. I remember imagining at the time that Valen Dreth was going to have a field day with Avidius!

Five levels and quite a bit of experience later I’m in full Blades gear with an Akaviri Katana emerging from the smoldering ruin of a closed Oblivion Gate that had sprung up near the junction of the Orange and Silver Roads north of the IC. As I’m about to mount my Bay I’m hit from behind. I whirl on my attacker, thinking that it is another Scamp or Clannfear Runt. It’s Avidius, wearing prison rags, swinging an iron dagger, and screaming about revenge! I loved this game from that moment forward.

The first quest I went on was figuring out how the game worked, lol

Seriously? I think it was joining the thieves guild, cuz I got arrested pretty early on (for killing some random lady)

I looked to the left and right banks, and stared in puzzlement. It was almost too good to be true that I could go anywhere, without a guide pointing me or dictating where to go.

That sparked a lot of nostalgia for me. My first was Morrowind, and it really was quite a baffling experience to consider how open-ended everything was. It was a little frightening, to be honest.

Magical.

That's pretty funny, because Zero Visibility is one of the LAST quests I ever did (the first time through, when I was completing EVERY quest, that is.)

My first quest? ...Damn, I'm going to be honest, I really don't remember. It was years ago, and I've stepped out of those sewers so many times it's hard to remember. I think I might have just immediately went to Jauffre with the Amulet. After that, I just explored the cities and talked to people, collected quests, joined guilds, went crazy.

I started following the nice marker Bethesda placed on my compass straight to Weynon Priory, but I swam across Lake Rumare and decided to follow a road that led uphill in the direction I was going and ended up finding a ruined Fort and a Fine Steel Longsword, I did not have any idea that I had stumbled upon and botched an easter egg until I decided to purchase a Prima Guide a few months later. I was so close to death by the time I finally got to Weynon Priory, I only used Fast Travel from that point on until I had completed the Main Quest.
I decided to actually travel the roads after completing the main quest, and I realised what I had missed out on by Fast travelling. I have always walked to a new place in every playthrough since then.
I also learned that a great Class and Birthsign for Morrowind did not work very well in Oblivion.

Hmm.... Something tells me it was 'The Sirens Deception', but I'm pretty sure it wasn't. I think it's just because I love that quest.
I'm thinking it was the first Fighters Guild quest - 'A Rat Problem'... I think.

ended up finding a ruined Fort and a Fine Steel Longsword,

Funny thing is that I've never found that promised treasure, and believe me, I've looked for it. And I didn't know of this "treasure" until the KDQ mod added a rumor topic about it...

Good stories here!

PS: Ni! How did you end up in Anvil when playing OB for the first time?

When I first saw how big Cyrodil was I had abosolutly no idea where to start. After looking at the map for awhile I started with the arena quests to get easy money to buy better equipment.

Snip from Episode 2.2 of Buffy's Journal -

* * *
I was so excited I started dancing around like a little, well, wood elf. That of course attracted the attention of a mudcrab on the shore of the lake who began clicking, hissing and moving towards me pretty quickly. Rather than reaching for an arrow, my right hand erupted in a stream of flames that both killed and cooked the beast.

Cracking the crab's shell open with a large stone, I ravenously ate the meat. A huge drink of the lake later, I felt a bit better.

At that point I could feel Acadian urging me to climb the hill up to the Imperial City.

I guess it was the pent up emotions of what I had recently been through and so many sudden changes forcing their way into my life. I'm sure that being exhausted didn't help. Waves of despair, anger and frustration surged within me.

Choking back a sudden urge to cry, I put my hands on my hips and defiantly threw back my head. "Look", I said angrily, "if we're going to travel together, we need to reach some understandings. You obviously know many valuable things about my world, and I believe you can help me; but just as obviously, you know nothing about women. We are going to have to work together here. I'm filthy, bone tired and I stink. I'm not going one step further without a bath in this nice lake."

Silence.

"Well ok then." I took off those putrid clothes and dove into the lake. Ten minutes later, I felt like a new elf as I reluctantly climbed out of the water. I spent a couple hours on the old wooden pier, scrubbing my clothes and the stuff I brought out of the prison. I figured maybe I could sell some of it for enough gold to help get me home.

The sun was now well below the top of White Gold Tower, which meant I only had a few more hours of daylight. I dressed as best I could and, with a small strip of cloth, tied my now dry hair into a ponytail. After carefully loading my pack, and strapping on the bow, goblin staff and quiver, I started the climb toward Imperial City.

When I left the prison for the first time I killed a few mudcrabs, picked some ingredients and got attacked by two Imps guarding a cave. After dispatching the Imps I decided to loot the cave they were guarding to see if I could fine some "useful" items. I cleared that cave with my Marksman skills and found some useful clothing. When I left the cave i was pretty much capped out so I decided to go to the Imperial City to sell off some of the things I acquired. I had some new cloths so surely the ever watchful Imperial Guard would not recognize me as an escaped prisoner. I found the Copious Coinpurse and got along famously with Thoronir. I visited some of the other shops to see what they had for sale and was soon working for the Merchant's Association spying on my good friend Thoronir. I am glad I could help him out and make a few coins in the process.

The next thing on my agenda was to find a house to store the things I didn't need to carry with me so I was off to loot some more caves so I could afford to buy that Imperial City Shack everyone was "raving" about.

As Teresa can recount, it was Go Fish:
Teresa woke early next morning with a slight ache in her head. Her alchemical gatherings had borne fruit however, and she felt very pleased with herself when she produced an echinacea root. Having no mortar and pestle with her to grind it down, she simply cut off a small piece and ate it. That would take care of her head pains, she thought proudly as she dressed and headed down to the common room.

Nerussa was already awake and there to greet her, taking Teresa somewhat aback. She had hoped to slip out of the inn without any further embarrassment. Now she would have to talk with the high elf and try not to act like an idiot, something she seemed to be having a problem with since meeting the innkeeper.

"You know, someone really should help Aelwin," Nerussa said, apparently to no one in particular, as she produced a small bread roll for Teresa's breakfast. Since there was no one else in the room but the two of them, Teresa had the distinct impression that she was that no one in particular.

"With his leg?" Teresa asked. "I am not a healer. I would not know what to do."

"No, with his fish," Nerussa explained.

"With his fish?" Teresa replied, feeling completely lost. "What about his fish?"

"He only needs to kill a dozen more Rumare Slaughterfish to fulfill a contract he has with an alchemist in Skingrad," Nerussa explained. "He is doing some kind of experiments with their scales. Aelwin was hoping to use the money to retire and live in the city. But now he can't even do his regular fishing with his leg the way it is, let alone catch the slaughterfish.

Teresa could see where this was going. Her instincts told her to bolt. There was no way she was going to go out and tangle with slaughterfish. A lifetime on the Waterfront had taught her that. There was a reason they were called slaughterfish after all.

So a half hour later she was standing on the shore of the lake, wondering why on Nirn she had agreed to catch the fish for Aelwin.

It was Nerussa's eyes, Teresa thought, those damned soft amber eyes that sparkled just so when the morning light shone through the window. Teresa sighed. She had always heard of women using their wiles on men, but never on other women. It was not at all fair! she thought indignantly.

I want to say it was "Unfriendly Competition", but it's been a long time. Pretty sure it was that one, though.

My very first quest, the very first time I played the game long long ago was Brush with Death.

My Breton got out of the sewers and was concerned about going to the Imperial City (I thought that since he was an escaped prisoner he might be arrested). So I headed for what looked like the nearest town (Cheydinhal). After being killed several times by some Stunted Scamps by Belda, and being amazed at the graphics an that it was actually becoming night, he made it to Cheydinal. At which point he heard about the quest and was wondering if all the quests would be like that.

In retrospect Brush with Death was a very good first quest to do.

Some of you have excellent recall! Not I. Though I began playing TES4:Oblivion only two years ago I've not the foggiest notion which quest was first tackled. I do recall that it took some time to reacquaint myself with the game's WASD avatar movement keys. (I had been playing MMOs exclusively for some years. They were invariably configured to use arrow-keys for movement, freeing my left hand for their many necessary hotkeys.) Once out of starter dungeon/sewer my avatar spent time fruitlessly searching the Imperial City for a Fighters Guild recruitment center. He entered the Realm of Madness early on, level three, but not before joining the Fighters Guild and doing at least one FG quest. He also did several side-quests before transferring to the Isles. What they were escapes me.

I've honestly got no idea. Probably taking the amulet to Jauffre and then liberating Kvatch. After that, I think I did the Mages Guild recommendation quests, as magic is what interests me most.

The very first quest I completed I think was the Mages Guild Recommendations in all of the towns in order to gain access to the Arcane University. I did all of the Mages Guild quests in MW first when I played that and I thought I owed it to myself to do the Mages Guild first again.

Better question would be what Guild Quest Line did you finish first?

Hard to remember, but I had played Morrowind and Daggerfall and knew I had to go cash in my stuff so I could carry more. So I went to Cheydinhal, seemed average. Picked up some quests there with the fighters and mages guild mainly, I also pursued the main story. To this day I still do most of my business in Cheydinhal with Gorba, cause she buys just about everything and I don't have to spend alot of time running around. And also at the mages guild, especially with a young character to buy and sell potions or get soul gems. And the chapel of Arkay if I need healed and don't have the spells. Kind of stuck with me like a hometown and still and always will be.

I just checked (I keep an archive of incremental saves of all my characters.) My first Oblivion character, an Imperial female named Forlorna, went directly to Jauffre. Probably stopped in the Imperial City to sell some stuff first, because the first save, just outside the door of the Priory, shows she has sold most of the stuff you pick up in the tutorial.

I'm pretty sure that was actually my second character. In almost all RPGs, I create a barbarian-type character named Glargg first, and test the game with him. I have a Glargg save from a few days later than the above one, from just outside the tutorial. I'm assuming that I created him first, saved somewhere in the tutorial, and then later saved over that first file after starting Forlorna.

Forlorna went on to save Kvatch and join the Fighters Guild. She never completed the Main Quest.

Probably the MQ' one. Or Benirus manor. I recall that was one of the first ones.

Buffy's first quest was one fight in the Arena to earn enough money to book ship passage home to Bravil. Simplicia the Slow told her that joining the Arena and doing one match was smarter and safer than joining the prosttutes Guild. After her one fight, she made it home.

Her next quest was the Bravil MG recomendation, followed by the Leyawiin recomendation as she worked to gain entrance to the University.

I decided that I would continue the main quest. I walked (ran, rather) all the way to the Weynon Priory and talked to Jauffre inside. However, there was something I just didn't like about the monks. Having heard from a friend that you could basically do anything and kill anyone, I decided to murder both of the other monks (I can't remember their names) inside the chapel in the morning. I left the Priory, disillusioned with the main quest, and decided to stay over night at the Grey Mare in Chorrol. When I woke up, I was seriously freaked out by Lucien Lachance, but soon enough I learned to love him.
