What was the issue with capes?

Post » Sun Aug 18, 2013 9:00 am

Was it a clipping or graphics issue, or was it 11/11/11? IMO they should and could of added them. Your thoughts? Were you expecting them? Should they have added them? Could they have added them?

Also, let's keep this one clean ight folks? :intergalactic:

To me, keeping capes out -mostly- seemed more like a design decision, rather than anything else.

Were you expecting them? - Nope.
Should they have added them? - I dont know.
Could they have added them? - Yep.

Atleast we have Hammerfell Garb and Nightingale armour.

I'll go with the clipping issues. There are enough of them as it is; adding capes or cloaks would have made it much worse.

Its definitely clipping issues. I've got the "Cloaks of Skyrim" mod installed, and the cloaks clip on ALOT of armour sets in the vanilla game, so its no small wonder why they chose to leave this out.

There are some pretty good cape and cloak mods on the Nexus. You do get some clipping issues with certain animations and actions like sneaking. But I stopped using them because they got boring. A cape covers up all the neat design work on the Armor and clothing and I personally find capes to be much less visually interesting. If every character in Skyrim ran around in a cape or cloak I wouldn't have found the game nearly as interesting.

I haven't played an Argonian or a Khajiit in a long time, but don't their tails clip through the cape?

Clipping issues sounds right. I have a mod where you can make your own cape for weather gear and it clips pretty badly. Would have been a good idea to jazz up some wardrobes and add different designs into the world. Along with more detailed clothing and armor I would have liked it. FWIW while character and NPC resolution and animations took a great leap forward from Oblivion the armor and clothing in some cases took a back seat.

I've never played an Argonian or a Khajiit (okay, I played a Khajiit in Daggerfall, but they looked more like humans in those days) but I would guess the tail sticks right through the cape. You could always pretend there was a slash in the cloak to allow the tail some freedom.

I'm going with this as well ^^

Besides I wouldn't want capes......I would rather a http://www.osfcostumerentals.org/stock/Capes/Medieval%20Renaissance%20Capes/slides/09036973%20Cape%20Medieval%20with%20cowl%20and%20hood%20tan%20grey%20black%20weave.JPG over a cape any day

So, supposing they fixed the clipping issues for the next TES would you like to have capes?

I'd love capes, really add some jazz and style to wardrobes and/or evil villain characters.

Capes can get stuck in a crevice when you're climbing a mountain or even trigger a trap in a Dwemer ruin.

NO CAPES!!

Perhaps in the next TES game, they will have implemented cloth physics to solve the clipping issues. Although I sincerely doubt it.

It was a design decision and a good one. I never understood the ridiculous mods that add capes. There are always a thousand of them for Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim. It's like people have some sort of fetish with capes. It's just weird and unnecessary.

Not all the time actually. Some mods have actually addressed this and gotten rid of tails entirely when wearing a cape, just like my companion over here:

Depends, there are a few examples of "Capes" in the game. The most notable being on the Nightingale set.

If you're refering to physics-enabled capes, the answer seems pretty simple actually; physics processes for them are likely too large a drag on the already stretched-thin hardware.

If you're talking static capes? As it's own equipment slot, that's one more slot to render on a character model, and we lost "Legs" to this issue already. Integrated directly into armor? Clipping and design choices would be my guess.

Ah yes, the capes that do not obey the laws of physics, and stick to the back of your legs no matter what :)

Going by these two as an example, probably wasn't worth the hassle to fix,

If they don't add them in the next TES, I might cry

Many people think capes make their characters look heroic. Personally, I'd love capes and cloaks. They could really add some depth in to the way your character looks, especially if we could customise them with hoods and designs etc. But hey, it's personal preference right? Some are for it and some are not. I say that if Beth can make it work then add it. Not harming anyone.

The tail could come under the cape maybe. Or you could cut a hole in.

Can you imagine fighting a dragon with your tail sticking through a hole in your cape? That might get a little awkward :turtle:
