What was your first reaction to Tovald's cave?

Post » Thu Jun 13, 2013 4:48 pm

When you come across the place for the first time, your initial thoughts are "Meh, a cave. Must be a small or medium sized dungeon, it should be cleared in one or two minutes tops."

Then it turns out to be this huge place with more sections than you'd expected, a damn Falmer army, and when you finally reach the very end...

You fall.

Urges to break your controller rise.

Definitely one of the toughest dungeons you'll find in this game. I couldn't get past the final battle with a mage character whose level was in the 30s. I brought her back to it when she was over Level 50 and managed to clear it out. My thief character just recently completed it to get a certain quest item - that character was near Level 50 too.

I've had two dungeons in this game where I couldn't clear them the first time I visited them. Both of them are Falmer locations (Tovald's cave and Sightless Pit).

I was sent as a "rescue" quest during the Companion Questline. It was my "Shimmermist Cave".

I like to make many Hard Saves in new places, I have lost many Weeks of Gameplay since 11-11-11 exploring Skyrim and having characters die.

I discovered it for the first time a few days ago and got right to the end before dying. I was raging, when the game reloaded, I just turned and walked out. Maybe I'll go back and finish it later.

My reaction?

I was stuck in Tovald's cave for 10 IRL days because for some reason the game froze every time I tried going into the any other cell.

I do not have fond memories of that place, It was a Jail for me! :(

I vaguely remember it, but after seeing some of these comments... I may have to re-visit. Sounds like fun.

A good dungeon, a tear jerker with the journal. In my twenties when I cleared it. (Stealth Archer)

The only dungeon I've ever turned out of, and never finished. Terrifies me.

Faldar's Tooth is a struggle too.

Right when I saw 30 red markers my jaw dropped.

Hell naw! That place was a nightmare.

I slaughtered the Falmer like gnats, but was a little surprised by the Dunmer ghosts at the end. Once I retrieved the crown though for Vex, I felt a pang of sympathy for the long dead Dark Elves. To be ambushed like that by those gremlins...It made me respect the Dunmer a bit more that day with the care they gave to the crown of a long dead Queen, even if that Queen was very un-queen like during a lot of her life. :yuck:

All in all, not too difficult for me. I cleared it nine times after all, and I was always on master difficulty and level 81, so I was very prepared.

Walked in there alone, just before i started the Dawnguard DLC.

I believe my character was a level 75 or so when i got in, boom......falmer fest.

Nothing but top level gloomlurkers, shadowmasters etc.....

Freaking A......it was just insane.......

My first reaction? Not so bad with frost trolls (> PC level 30) until the second zone... damn skeevers are the thumbs down to warning the hostiles.

Tovald is the one the hardest dungeons in this game, in fact my top 5 overall; hence, you are/be warned, if underleveled or poor PC building.
