What were they thinking?

Post » Thu Dec 23, 2010 8:16 am

Brink looks to be a very promising game, I'm loving everything about it so far; the customization, the team-based gameplay, the art style and storyline. But there is just one thing that I'm not too fond of .

Gun sound effects.

Now don't get me wrong, they guns don't sound bad, they're ok; but the one gun sound that really made me say "what were they thinking?" is the Minigun. When a Minigun spins up it should make all who hear it cower in fear. It should sound menacing. Instead, it sounds like a Nerf gun. When it spins up the sound is terrible, it sounds like it's made of cheap plastic. But it's not just the Minigun, even the other guns don't sound the best, they're not bad, but not the best. http://www.youtube.com/user/BrinkVideos#p/u/0/l_CykYOy6Lw

I just don't understand how this could happen. They recorded the sounds from firing REAL guns; they even made a video showcasing them doing so to emphasize how realistic the gun sounds were going to be. My question to you guys is: What do you think of the weapon sound effects?

Maybe real guns sound like crap?

I could care less, really. I'll probably just mute the TV anyways to listen to my music.

Ummm have you heard other games' guns? These sounds are far above mist other games (especially CoD) trust me when I say that they sound pretty darn good, usually they sound weird in games cause they have to make the noise quieter which sometimes makes them sound weird

Watch Predator. Once the ammo is out it is whisper quiet. The motor spinning it won't sound menacing. The rounds won't either.

Just sayin.

That's very true. Brink's gun sounds ARE much better than most; but it`s just that Minigun... It should sound like the Death Machine in CoD (not a really devoted fan)

Most minigun motors are electric, they are pretty much silent. Most games over exeragate the sound of the motor to make it sound big and awesome, not to bothered by this. I am hoping that ADS with the minigun lets you keep it at full speed, with out firing.

Well they had to lower the volume otherwise the speakers in your tv or speaker system would be blown out. Miniguns are freaking loud.

That was a great sound. I agree. Fine with everything else though. Everything else sounds pretty damn good.

Has anybody considered that it was simply a cheap sound recording and that was what was messing with the gun sounds?

You guys have to remember - Whether the audio equipment itsself, messed up.

But these guys did use "real guns" - To mimic all sounds to perfect.

Theres a video out there where it shows you unloading all the guns.

I think you should know that the Death machine is a 30cal prototype with a slow rate of fire. and the mini gun in brink is a 7.62mm clean firing future weapon. your comparing chork and cheeze. if you really think it's not what it's craked up to be then go check it out on youtube watch real test fires of a 7.62 minigun very quite and still ever so deadly.

I haven't been bothered by the gun sounds, personally. They sound like guns. They go "boom" or "chakka chakka chakka" which is all I am looking for.

Although I do like the one guy's description of the .50 sniper rifle sounding like "God coughing."

My theory: when we think "minigun", we think Sasha.

Either way, I find watching gameplay that I haven't seen before interesting to watch. I'm sure the sounds will be a lot better in the actual game. Gameplay looks very enjoyable.

This

And if they used the real sound of a minigun firing. You would hear it being fired at you and you would s*** your pants. Heck, the guy firing it would s*** his pants too. This would happen every time one went off. The closest thing i can describe it as is a couple million killer bees being pumped into the room your standing in. Also the walls are lined with high quality mics that are wired directly to a pair of Astro's on your head. At full volume. and even then you still wouldnt understand.

Three things of note.

Sound quality of the video is iffy.

It's the Security Minigun, clean and well oiled probably won't be the same for the Resistance.

It's heard from somebody else's perspective.

It didn't sound bad to me, just muffled. Would I like it to have a more shattering sound, sure, but that could very well have been anyone of the three issues I noted, or all three together.

The motor when spinning up the minigun should be almost silent, its most probably electric ffs, when it starts spitting lead thats a different story . Hoping it is almost silent, then you can surprise people with it (assuming you can keep it up at full speed)
