What wiil i do

Post » Tue Feb 08, 2011 4:02 am

Ok. So I want to get a PC capable of running Oblivion but I have one small problem. I know next to nothing about computers. Forgive me, I grew up on a farm in the middle of nowhere. So, basically i'm asking, What the hell do I do? I know I sound like an idiot but I haven't a clue. I'm on the DirectX Diagnostic Tool so ask any questions that i may be able to find the answer for there. Also, if you know any site where I could buy a cheap PC capable of running Oblivion on Standard settings that'll be dandy. Thanks

Pretty much any middle of the road computer you buy these days will be capable of running Oblivion. Just make sure it has a half decent dedicated video card, not an onboard chip. You should have at least a 400 series card on the NVidia side, or a 5000 series from ATI. Those are the start of their DirectX 11 lines so you'd be future proofing yourself to a certain extant by getting either of those types. And you want at least 2 gig of RAM.

Well, do you have a system right now that is upgradeable or is it just too old? You can post a dxdiag of your machine and we'll anolyze it to see if anything worthwhile can be done. To post a dxdiag:
Start - Run (if Vista, the search box acts like Run) - type dxdiag - hit Enter - "save all info" button - open txt file and copy/paste EVERYTHING here

Picture of process: http://www.windowsresource.net/cimages/gotodxdiag.jpg

IF you just want a new machine, answer a few questions first....

1.) your budget in your country's currency
2.) what country you reside if not listed in your avatar area....Republic of Ireland?
3.) pre-assembled PC? ...or can you build your own?
4.) what is needed other than the PC tower? Monitor, speakers, mouse, keyboard, Windows OS disc? All these can jack up the price.

Not too bad. For upgrades, first, you would need a video card. Given that you have a 300 watt power supply in that, (provided it isn't the slim case, is it?) kinda restricts your upgrades. Without upgrading it, best you could do would be something akin to an ATI 5450. Worlds better than what you have now..... but, still not as good as it could be..... picking up a reasonable power supply would let you get into more 'uber' territory. :D Of course, that would also involve installing them...... (in all reality, it isn't overly difficult, if you can use both hands to cut your steak, you can install computer parts. :D)

Processor upgrade wouldn't hurt either, but, that socket is getting kinda long in the tooth, and prices for processors that fit, are starting to go up, as supplies diminish.

So, basically what it comes down to is, how much do you have to spend, and can do you want to attempt the install yourself, or pay someone else to do it? Or, would you prefer to just purchase a new system? Build yourself a new system?

So, how much, and what country ya in, and what are you willing to do yourself, what would you need aside from the tower itself? (re-use your current monitor/keyboard/mouse/speakers/whathaveyou?)

Provided that this Vostro 230 is a Mini-Tower with a 300W power supply and not the slim-line Vostro 230, you can actually get a decent video card. The 300W PSU would actually be able to handle a Radeon 5670 without much problems as they are very low power consumption cards. If you want something more powerful, I'd replace the PSU as well.

So as HeyYou and myself asked, what you want to do? How much you got to spend...etc, etc, etc.....

Well i'm in Ireland. Got about 500 euro to spend and as long as its not complicated, install the parts myself.
Also the main reason I want a PC is for mods, if that helps.
BTW really impressed with yer ability to understand that. It's all mumbo jumbo to me.

Well, your PC is still pretty capable if you just add a graphics card and change the power supply. It won't even even take €500 to do it either. However, getting an entirely new system for €500 that will play the game better than the simple upgrade would be difficult....you need more money. Soooo, just upgrade your current system, save money for the future overhaul, and enjoy the fact that your current system will play the game well for the time being.

But you need to make sure that your PC is a mini-tower and not one of those slim-line PCs. So does your PC look like the one on page 1 or page 2 here:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/vos230/en/sfits/sfits_en.pdf

Provided it's the PC on page 1, then for video cards, the GTX 460 is still a solid card that will max the game. Then there's the Radeon 6870 and the GTX 560 Ti, which cost more. Because of your processor limitation, I'd say the GTX 460 or the RAdeon 6870 are good cards for your system that won;t be held back too much by your E7500 processor. A quality 500W power supply replacement will do.

PSU: http://www.dabs.ie/products/corsair-memory-builder-series-cx500-500w-atx-psu-75S2.html?refs=55420000

That'll already cost half of your budget.

So if I got those I would be sorted? Would it be able to handle the graphics mods? Its just I thought about getting Morrowind and i saw a really good graphics mod which makes look like a game that came out yesterday or something.

Also, I know this ain't the fallout forum but I got the Fallout Trilogy a while back and it ran perfectly on my old PC. However, now with this PC it freezes at the install screen and today the install screen wouldn't even come up. Is ther something wrong with the PC that would perhaps make me unable to play Oblivion, even with the upgrades?

The only problem here is the video chip your current system has. If you had a half decent video card, you wouldn't have any problems starting up Fallout. Intel integrated chips just aren't good enough for the game, you need a dedicated card that's reasonably powerful. As mentioned though, make sure your case is big enough for a new card before investing in one.

The problem is you have an Intel chipset in there and until recently Intel refused to add support for Hardware Transform and Lighting and OB and Fallout like many games specifically check for hardware support when launched and refuse to run if the test fails -- I believe your chipset does now support it but you are using an older version of the drivers which may have been released before they added the support ( according to your DXDIAG your driver is from 8/25/2010 ) So you might want to try updating the video driver and may find that after the update Fallout will run (not at top quality settings but should at least run) --( I'd still recommend the video card and power supply upgrade though if wanting to play at higher settings)

So if I did that, they would work? Great. But what about mods. If I got those upgrades would my PC be able to handle, say, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGkqjabgVks. And I have the mini-tower, not the slim so I can upgrade it.

No, you'll have to open up the case and add them inside. It's not really that hard to do if you pay attention to the manuals you'll get with the components and take your time to figure everything out. The video card especially will be fairly easy to install. You might have to go into your BIOS later on when you start your computer again, in order to disable your onboard video chip. Sometimes rigs will get confused as to which video system they should be using and default to the onboard chip.

OK. I will definately be doing that so. Just one more question, if you want to get mods, do you need to download something to allow you to use them or can you just get them directly from the site they are on?

The only thing you'll need is a utility that will uncompress them, as they come in the form of a compressed archive. Then you just stick the resulting files in your Data folder after they're uncompressed. 7 Zip is all you'll need and it's available for free on the internet. Some mods will come in an OMOD format, in which case you'll need OBMM (Oblivion Mod Manager) in order to install them.

Sorry, but just a quick note on the hardware installs. If you're not very mechanically-inclined, or just nervous, it's not that expensive to purchase the parts and have a professional put them in for you. They are pretty straightforward in design, but for @$75USD, (especially now with the Irish economic woes) I doubt you'll have much problem finding a quick and cheap installer to help you. Plus, they'll be more capable of getting your bios set up properly, and have everything running up to snuff.

Well, i'm not that mechanically-inclined, but I thought it was pretty straightforward. Pop off the case stick in the parts and thats it. Or is it?

Vid card is easy. Powersupply has a boat load of connectors. If you pay attention when you pull the old one, installing the new one isn't too bad. most of the connectors are very specific as to where they go, and are keyed, so, you can't plug them in wrong. Taking a pic before removal wouldn't be a bad plan. :D
