Here's some info on that: A follower's level can continue to increase along with the player's level, whether they travel with you or not. However, each follower has a maximum level (which varies for each follower). Also, each follower has a specific set of favored skills. Regardless of how often a follower uses a skill, they do not get better at it, as a player does by continuous use of a particular skill. For example, trying to force Brelyna Maryon to be a sword wielding, shield bashing warrior will not work, she will always be more adept to using magic.

This website has everything you need to know about Sky. This URL will take you to the "Followers" page.

Good luck.

I read online that "Aela the Huntress" can use one-handed weapons in Skyrim.

Can Aela the Huntress equip the Daedric Shield and the Daedric Sword in Skyrim???
i married her, although i do use other followers also but she does level, she goes up to like level 50, as far as does she use daedric weapons, not sure but she probably will use any good sword, i give her an enchanted ebony sword and she uses it, now she won't use other bows, however she will use an imperial bow, so i enchant an imperial bow with fire damage enchant, upgraded of course and she uses it with great effect, her archery skill is 100 at her max level, almost higher than any follower for a bow, although jenna i think has 100 archery skill leveled up and her max level is 40 i think. aela is a good follower, she's tough, give her some enchanted gear and she's as good as any other follower.

I'd like her to equip some claws every now and then.

My Aela ( married) right now has full daedric armour inc shield not the helm, ( I gave her heavy Dragon helm instead, looks better :P) and a Daedric War axe. I gave her Daedric arrows and not bothering with a better bow, as she will use hers anyways.

Yes, you can give her a sword and shield but she seems to mostly hang back and shoot her bow. Also when it's night time, even in a lit cave she uses her torch allot instead of her shield.

Aela's my missus and chief cohort, and she's decked out in Dragonscale gear with Chillrend and the Nocturnal bow. She rarely uses the bow since I've given her a variety of staves. She really likes those, and generally selects them based on circumstances. For example, she will use a fireball staff on a troll, and a shock staff on a magic wielder. As for using her hidden bow, this is reliably caused when she is dismissed from service and you leave the same cell. The fix is easy, but a little tiresome: take everything from her and give back only what you want her to have. This is done via the console, of course, and selecting her:

removeallitems player

This gives you everything in her possession. She will be in her "default" Nordic gear. Close then reopen the console and type:

removeallitems

Now she'll be naked. At this point you could RP a bit, but really you should give her the stuff you want her to use. You will have a set of Nordic armor in your possession, too.

Ancient Nord armor she is wearing is equal to Iron. So I presume yes, she will wear daedric.

She should use anything you give her that is better then what she currently uses. She seems to use a bow a lot, but does witch to melee occasionally. You may not be able to give her a new bow though. I read there is a bug with Bow using followers that if you give them a bow better then their default, they may still prefer their default.

she won't use other bows except for an imperial bow...i give her a fire enchanted imperial bow and she uses it, i see the enemies on fire, some followers wil use bows you give em, but yeah its a bit glitch with the followers and bows, you kinda just have to go with what they will use, when i gave aela the ebony bow she didn't use it but i enchanted an imperial bow and she uses it, i'm on the 360.

Just remove the torch from her inventory, should stop her doing that

She'll use the Drainspell Bow. http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Drainspell_Bow

Can Aela the Huntress equip the Daedric Shield and the Daedric Sword in Skyrim???

I believe so. She won't use them quite so efficiently, though. She specialises in Archery and Light Armour. So a big heavy shield might not be quite so effective. She should pick the sword over her knife though.
