What will Skyrim smell like?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 5:55 am

By the way.. I am wondering.. am I the only one who likes that "New game smell" when you open up a brand new game? Part of the experience for me. Open that game and take a whiff. Before you judge remember.. they make "New car" air fresheners for cars and after saying this I wonder how many people will sniff their game when they receive it.

You mean the terrible plastic smell? Uh.. Can't stand it.

I get exactly what the OP is talking about. It's a psychological sensory/memory effect. Your brain does amazing things. That is if your an intellectual one. Armani Glo reminds me of a lot of memories. But to be on topic, I'd like an Apple Cinnamon candle to be lit around me, or Rosemary/Mint spray. Hmm, can't choose now. Personally, both are comfortable aromas. :D

haha! to each his own I suppose. I find it part of the ritual of opening a new case. Strange but hilarious to admit. I am totally cool with being weird. :twirl:

I know what you mean about the smell/taste association. I'm reminded of Morrowind whenever I eat Mr. Noodles or popcorn.

I'm not going to try to force a taste or smell connection to Skyrim though, that's just kind of weird. Besides, things like this usually don't work if you are trying to force it.

Im going to get as many mugs as I can find and make a shrine of ale around my TV. Every time I see a dragon I'll drink one.

Smell and Taste.

Plastic, the "new game smell". Truly, I weep for people relying on digital downloads.

I have a very poor sense of smell, so I wouldn't be able to associate a game with a smell.

However, I did associate Dragon Ball Budokai 3 with winter, and Sonic 2 with snow falling in my garden... I also kind of associated Oblivion with summer. Seems like I associate games with seasons. Interesting.

A bunch of people have replied to this thread that OBVIOUSLY did not read the original post. This is very interesting. If I were you, I wouldn't be them.

Friday, December 25th 2009.

In my Christmas stocking I received a boat load of chocolate, a book, chocolate reindeer mint hand sanitizer (smells super awesome), and, the point of the story, an Axe Dry "Chocolate" deodorant. Now for starters, axe chocolate smells pretty good for a cheap Axe product, at least compared to other Axe stuff. But the Axe Dry version of axe chocolate (conventional deodorant, not body spray) smells a hell load better than any other deodorant that I have used. Of course, having a new, nice smelling deodorant, I put it on all the usual places and under my nose, since I liked the smell so much. Later, after eating breakfast until my stomach burst from all the crepes filled with whipped cream and syrup, we opened presents. The present I specifically asked for that year was Assassins Creed II for my Xbox 360. Lucky for me, I got what I asked for, along with many other things as well of course.
That day I played Assassins Creed II for a long time and got about 1/5 through the game (or something like that, 2009 of course, I don't remember.) This is the moment that started it. The moment I opened the main menu my brain made the connection somehow that Assassin's Creed II smells like Axe Chocolate! Of course I used that deodorant all week and I played AC2 all week, that's really what made the two completely different things become connected in my mind.

Now, years after the connection was made, Dry Axe Chocolate, whenever I smell it, reminds me COMPLETELY of the most amazing moments in Assassin's Creed II. Its as if AC2 shoots up my nose and into my train of thought. Axe Chocolate gives me a bombardment of nostalgia! Axe Chocolate, to me, SMELLS like Assassins Creed II! I am not fibbing!

Now, I've done some thinking. You probably need a smell that you have never smelled before. You probably need to smell it constantly during the first few days of gameplay, at least (you won't smell it at all after about 10 mins but your brain will still be associating the smell with Skyrim). And it probably needs to be associated with MUSIC. When I smell Axe Chocolate my brain starts playing the main http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0i6YFrSs6c.

Now, I've done some more thinking. I would really like to have my brain associate some nice smell with The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim. I thought that after you guys heard my story, that you would like to also.

I will go out into the forest and gather some dry woodland like smelling plants, and let them dry. Then I will lie in bed and think about Skyrim while listening to Skyrim's soundtrack and smelling the plants. I might find another smell. The stronger the better, the nicer the better.

What smell will you try to associate with Skyrim?

Edit: Apart from dragon poo?

This is one of the damnedest things Ive read on this forum. I am very interested in trying this out. Now I completely understand the effect of associating a smell or color or whatever to a memory. But I have never thought of doing it purposefully and let alone for a video game.... Hmmm. Ok, Im in brother. But what smell could I use. I guess it should be a smell I dont already have associations with, but it should be common enough that you will experience it every now and then in the coming years... hmmm.... Lavender as you suggested isnt a bad option. I could get a couple of those lavender type room scent products and only have them open when I am playing. If I can do that for a few weeks it should work. COOL!

Nice post Mankar!

edit: I just had a thought.... After you have created the association in your brain and bridged the memory of Skyrim and lavender for instance. What if you leave the smell to waft every now and then when you sleep.... Would you have Skyrim dreams? This topic needs to be brought back just before release to try out and set up some experiments.

I mostly have this with songs, and haven't really thought about smells or tastes that I associate with games.
Well, except Norwegian Milk Chocolate, which reminds me of Warcraft 3, as me and my friends always ate that when LANing that game. :P

I guess, when I play The Elder Scrolls, I get so caught into it's world, that I totally forget what's around me, and thus don't associate anything with it. And no songs either, as I always listen to the Elder Scrolls sounds and music when playing the games. :D

Yes,I have discovered something similiar:

Assassin creed 1 reminds me of certain heart shaped potatoe chips.
Oblivion reminds me of nacho's and Disturbed(The band.Especially "The sickness" album)
And halo 3 reminds me of energy drinks(And depression).

I didn't read the OP and I'm probably going to associate Skyrim with the awesome smell of new plastic that most games usually have.
