What will be your first class?

Post » Sat Aug 14, 2010 1:03 am

Well that bit of info pretty much wraps up a crappy evening.

Not really, many people will still specialize in certain areas.

That said, I'm going to be a Battle Mage for the illionth time, lack of class names be damned, slicing stuff people open and then blowing up their friends has always been fun.

Not to mention hiding is for pansies :D

I'm also thinking a Sith Lord class will be awesome. A blade in one hand. Lightning spells in the other. Plus some dark robes.

I was a bit miffed when i read it but then i got thinking. This is a GOOD thing. They aren't FORCING us to have to play to an archetype and punish us for wanting to learn sneak as a mage. (Leveling minor skills contributes less to leveling).

This was you can still be a thief, mage, archer, apple sales man, and its better for it.

I shall be a mage. i was going to be a necromancer, but with no necromancer school of magic, it looks unlikely. :(

I shall find the biggest axe/hammer, wield it, and that will be all that matters as far as my first character goes.

It's closer to reality. In reality, if you want to be a cyclist, you get on the bike and pedal. After a while, you start calling yourself a cyclist.

In Skyrim, if you want to be a wizard, you start lobbing fireballs. Once you are pretty good at this, just call yourself a wizard and be done with it. No formality required. If you really want to be a card carrying (Insert class name here.) join their guild. Rise up in the ranks. It's pretty hard to NOT call yourself a thief when you are a card carrying member of the thieves guild with the rank of UNSEENSHADOWMASTER, or PILFERGOD.

I tend to favor magic and stealth above straightforward combat. So, as always, I'll likely play a magician with some emphasis on stealth, lurking in the shadows, killing silently with a bow and magic.

I agree. Now, we can go the way of Mazoga and start claiming we are a knight, even if we weren't. Eventually, though, we can become a knight. It seems great, to me.

Although, the perks could limit things a bit in regards to that as I don't think you can rechoose them.

Maybe a perk that lets you re-choose your perks? :P

At first I was put off, but after thinking about it I like the idea of not having your class labeled outright. In Oblivion I hated having to choose a class in the beginning and then being sort of forced into that framework for the rest of the game. This new way seems perfect to allow players to play the game and let their actions sort of define their class throughout the game naturally.

Actually it would be cool if they had it like in fable 1 when you looked at your stats and it would tell you what you were by anolyzing what your most used combat styles were (stuff like warrior or spell warrior...)

I'll hopefully play differently than I did with my main character in Oblivion, where I used stealth, aggressive tactics with swords and rushing into battle, magic and archery, all with the same damned character. Not to mention joining all the guilds. Made roleplaying more or less impossile. It isn't going to be easy to resist the temptation to try it all though.

That would be awesome, too! Having the game determine your class as you play, letting it change naturally and fluidly. And of course there could be an option to just turn that feature off if people don't want to feel like they are being labeled or urged to play a certain way. I'd leave it on, though.

Based on the info so far, it seems clear that the player is a Thu'um-user. Not only that, but a Dragonborn is a Thu'um-user of the most powerful variety. I've been wanting to roleplay a Thu'um-user for years! Not only do we get to play as one (well, we're kinda compelled to, as it's a centerpeice of the main story ), but we get to be the most powerful Tongue in the world! My first playthrough, I plan to roleplay it for all it's worth. I hope the shouts sound crazy bad-ass. I hope there's some feedback in the gameworld and from NPCs (besides scripted story events) for how uber the PC is for using the Voice.

edit: not that "Thu'um-user" is somehow the "correct" choice--it's not even a class as such. But if there was still the traditional class system in Skyrim, I would make a custom class based on use of the Voice, as close to the lore as I could make it. So yeah, first class is going to be Tongue--I'm going to try to rely as much as possible on the Dragon Shouts for my killing needs (and possibly incidentals like travel, heh) and as little on melee or magic as possible. We'll see how feasible it is when the time comes....

Bethesda is redefining how one crafts their character. If anything, they are actually adding more choice and options by getting rid of the classes which gave premature restrictions. Now, players can take whatever paths they want and make whatever character they'd like.

Or at the very least whatever the preset and limited number of perks allow.

Bosmer, proficient with blades and most armor types.

By that you mean no conjuration? Where does it say no conjuration, and if you don't mean that what do you mean by necromancy besides summoning deadra?

I am interested by what they offer - that your character should not have a pre-set class with chosen skills, but rather should evolve as you, well, act. Feels right. What with the bonus for specialization (better levelling if you up skills that high) and the hopefully many, varied and interesting perks, it should prove to be interesting.

I do have a tinge of nostalgia for the classes, though. It's a kind of identity thing. :P

Anyway, as usual, I will end up as a stealthy character - short blade, light armour, lock-picking, sneaking around, and so forth. Never bothered to learn much magic beyond your basic emergency restoration spell, maybe I'll dabble a bit more this time around. That dual wielding thing promises to make it worth experimenting.

stealth based that will use a long sword or 2 short swords since they have duel wielding now. he will have great bow skill for long range atacks and will be trained in the art of ilussion. he will also have some knowledge of alchemy for poisons. i will name this custom class Shinobi :ninja:

Don't know about guilds restriction, but I'm pretty sure you will be able to max out your character with every skill and pick a huge amount of perks, since there is no level cap now and all skills contribute to leveling. In my eyes, people will try to max out way more than before, since it allows for more leveling and perks once you have maxed your favorite skills, never mind how slow it will be. For example, restoration was a pain to master, that doesn't mean people didn't do it? It will be harder and slower after level 50, but nothing is stopping you from maxing out at all. I would have liked a different approach, but hopefully it will play out alright in the end.

Probably some sort of spellswordish Nord; Blade Or Blunt (or 1h Melee if they've been combined?), Light Armor (combined?), Restoration, Destruction, aand... something more. Maybe staff if that's a skill, and if we can dual-wield them as that dude in the picture seems to do.

I will be a albino Khajjit witch. Specializing in Enchanting, Destruction, Conjuration, Restoration, Alchemy, Light Armor (if still separate), and Blunt or Spears if they are in, also Marksman if darts and throwing stars are back if not then no.

Nord Warrior, who will specialize with the spear and shield, if the weapon Gods are kind.

That would be so cool, but I doubt spears are in.

I generally have my first character as a ranged specialist with a mage support so will probably go with that this time too.

They should have classes, but you should have 5 levels or so to get a feel.
