What will be your first class?

Post » Sat Aug 14, 2010 12:27 am

So I don't think we have gotten to know each other like this yet... What kind of class will you be choosing? My first Morrowind and Oblivion Classes were stealth based archers. When rping i could see myself sneaking around (it just seems safer) picking off enemies from the dark so that is usually the class, i customize and name it something cool on my own most of the time. So i choose stealth. What will you be? Fighter, Wizard, Stealth, a mix?

I am tired of polls so no poll, it makes people read more without them.

No classes per se, but you can just play the game as you would play a class. I'll combine swords with a bit of Bows, Sneak and some Healing and Destruction, as always. Maybe some Illusion and TK. Plus Speech, of course and maybe some Mercantile.

Unfortunately this. Hopefully the "perks" system will make up for it. :(

You can do that in Daggerfall, Morrowind, and Oblivion, anyway, but there are no classes. All your skills help you reach new levels while the class system was described as restrictive. However, if you raise a skill that is at, say 50 by one point, you will gain more experience towards a latter level than if you raise a skill that is at 10 by one point. Raising already higher skills results in leveling up quicker. Also, we have Fallout style perks to choose from.

You can just play the game as you would play a class, man. No need for "Classes" if Jack-of-all-trades is hard to achieve.

We can still talk about our character's "class", it just isn't a game mechanic any more. As for me, pure mage as usual.

Well this changes everything. Ha, yeah i guess you could do pretty much whatever in all of the above, i just stuck true to my class i guess. Its just fun label.

Edit: i take it i should look at the leveling system as more of a fallout style.

This is also true. It's really no different than the last three Elder Scrolls games in terms of how you play, although now you can switch in the middle of the game to something else if you feel like it, although you will have to still learn those skills. It sounds fun, to me. Real life allows for new beginnings. Why shouldn't our games? Although, the perks could limit things a bit in regards to that as I don't think you can rechoose them. Is there a level cap? I thought I read it was 50, but I'm not sure. Anyway, think of perks and skills you specialize in as defining who you are.

Classes never seemed to matter much in Oblivion anyway. I could make a Class with all combat skills and still become a pretty good spellcaster.

I'll probably play as a Nord warrior type who does some crafting.

I read it is a soft level cap. You can still level up but it will be much slower.

magic and stealth. ie specialising in levitating near a window, flying in, grabbing anything of value below a certain weight and flying out.

One of the reasons to love TES. Maybe some locations won't be closed cells like most houses and we can actually do this.

So why is it called a level cap? Anyway, if that is the case, then, as I said, new beginnings are possible while still leveling up.

I like to think of it as a hybrid between Fallout's and TES's leveling systems.

Anyway, I will be playing as a paladin type character who specializes in swordfighting, blocking (if still separated), wearing armors (heavy, if still separated), smithing/armorer, restoration, a bit of alteration, and, if it's more useful in this game, possibly speechcraft (if still separated). Now, however, I no longer feel obligated to repeat doing certain actions or powerleveling to level up due to my class. :D Leveling up speechcraft and blocking was always a pain, for me. The attribute multipliers are also gone... :D or at least I hope what I read means they are...

Nord paladin type. Sword, shield, and a bit of restoration magic.

Then eventually I plan to get to an Altmer mage, Argonion thief, Orc 2 handed barbarian, Dunmer assassin, and Breton spellsword. Then if I'm not bored, a Redguard mercenary, a Khajit duelist, and a Bosmer archer. Imperials bore me though, I probably won't play one for more than a few levels.

They are including perks to pick after each level though, so maybe that will make up for it.

In the other games I always made custom classes but I always made myself to be more a spell-sword than anything, I used magic and blades in about an even manner. Now I can actually be a spell-sword in Skyrim thanks to the new combat system :celebration:

I remember way back when we were speculating for Oblivion (Don't let the join date fool you. An old forum account of mine dates back to 2002.) I posted an interesting suggestion of eliminating the classes, and just letting each skill level up as you use them. Granted, I also suggested that they eliminate LEVELS as well, and simply let the individual skills determine attributes. The end.

This suggestion was wildly unpopular, and while it was discussed quite a bit, eventually ended up in the bowels of the forums. It's interesting to see something similar show it's face today. Now, I'm certainly not suggesting they used, or even read my suggestion. But I still like the idea, and I have high hopes for how it all plays out. To me, it's a very organic, RP friendly way to play.

Yeah, no classes. But really, all 'classes' did was boost a pre-determined set of major skills. I never took a pre-made class! Always make your own!

In the beginning I wanted to be a mage. I took most mage stuff and got conjuration to 100 and then started working on blade and light armour. Now I'm a battlemage that uses liches and wraith lords to help. So basically, I'm a jack of all trades, BUT I have 100% magika resist hehe. Good ole mundane ring.
