What's with the skimpy armor?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 3:50 am

I think you can wear clothes underneath is why.

This is exactly what I think when I see the pictures, and I really hope that's the case.

After reading the whole thread, it looks more like it's about how everything needs to be "all about you," since there are non-skimpy armors as well but you're insisting that noooooooo, the ones you don't like must be altered to suit the way you think the game should be, and what anyone else thinks is completely irrelevant. Trust me, nobody will force you to use the armors you don't like.

 Exactly.

THIS!

Anyways clothing under armor is "kind of approved". Why? Look at the guard in the screenshot/trailer scene with the stalking old lady. The one with the dog. He has armor AND red clothing (I think it was red?) underneath! Anyways the armor isn't skimpy. Maybee cause Skyrim is going to be like morrowind: You are going to have single pieces of armor, not sets like in oblivion. And Nords have cold resistance!

I'm pretty sure those are all examples of light armor. There's a lot of examples of heavy armor out there, and a lot posted in this thread.

I see pretty barbaric armor... but not something i'd wear in skyrim since i'd clearly die from the cold if i'd reveal this much flesh, i'd honestly just wear fur, always fur.
The stereotype of barbarian armor comes from somewhere warmer than scandinavian countries. nobody would wear this over here (at least not in the past, but now with this whole global warming, sure.) skyrim has a mixture of both viking and barbaric armor sets i guess, i'm fine with it, it looks cool thats what it does.

BAM, this just in: Not everywhere in Skyrim is a frozen waste

Just because it's lite doesn't mean that it needs to be skimpy. Eleven armor is in the lite category and it's full body.

The fact of the matter is that these armor types you have shown have real life counterparts so it's not some made up useless armor, it's extremely light to allow for full range of motion while protecting your vital areas, just like how body armor is today to protect your vital organs from bullets. Also I've said that some people in the past find it makes them feel more powerful if they go into combat completely unarmored (a couple of the screens) and come out alive. They are all viable and real armor types and not just made up thing.

Because it gives you a light armor set with full coverage to wear, so you've got something to use without continuing this Quixotic "all armor must cover like a burkha" quest.

Look at all the examples of armor so far, what do you see?

I see armor thats extremely skimpy and that's not covering much. The armor on Dovahkiin doesn't even cover his back, and the one on the khajiit only covers one of his arms and just a small section of his chest. Last time I checked armor is worn for protection, not just looks. Skyrim is also a cold place to live so why is everyone running around like there going to go swimming at the local beach on a hot summer day? I actually HATE the look of the armor. I'm a history buff and the two things that I can't stand is armor that's either over the top, with random stuff jutting out of it, or armor thats basically a frying pan on a string. I hope they have more realistic armor in addition to this stuff. I'll still like the game if the armor looks like this, but I'm going to have a hard time ignoring the fact that swords are being deflected off my body by one cooking pot and a whole lot of air.

In Oblivion, even the smallest armor covered your entire body. It's nice to see there's some variation this time around, as we know that there will be the usual all-covering armors as well.
Second pic, just look at those muscles! As armor constricts you, he actually sacrifices protection for mobility. It's awesome to see something else than the typical all-covering armors. :)

The problem is that all this armor seems to be low level stuff, so basically if I play as a lite armor wearer I'm going to spend first half of the game running around almost naked while I'm waiting to find some eleven or glass armor.

Just because these examples don't cover everything doesn't mean ALL low-level light armor will be like that.just remember the armor is supposed to be in pieces so you should be able to create a look you like

Obviously you havent seen the screen with leather armor (the assassin is wearing it, in fact, the victim and the altmer in the chair are wearing fairly good beginner armor) http://skyrimguild.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/SkyrimTrailer12.jpg
and in here: http://dl.maximumpc.com/galleries/Skyrim/Skryim-Trailer-anolysis-25-Pipe-Dungeon.jpg
Or the armor worn by the guy here: http://dl.maximumpc.com/galleries/Skyrim/Skryim-Trailer-anolysis-23-NIRN-ROOT-CONFIRMED.jpg

Those do look like leather armor, and it is full body. Although I do got to say that the suit in the second picture looks more like a wool shirt.

Huh. Looks like a leather tunic w/reinforced shoulders, and bonus forearm greaves. The sleeves between the shoulders and the greaves could be lighter leather, or could be a brown shirt. Seems normal.

Skyrim kinda reminds me of Scotland to a point. It has vast wilderness and plenty of green grass, but when you go further north, you start getting snowy and icy. If I remember correctly, the Scotts didn't like wearing a whole lot of armor because it restricted their movements and speed. Perhaps this is what Bethesda's going for with some of the armor.

"Should be" What are you getting at? Your starting to sound really entitled right now. Its just a few armors without arms and stuff. Its not a big deal.

They aren't going to change the armors just because you don't like them. Either don't buy the game, or deal with it.

If you are looking for realism when you say you want more covering armor consider this fun fact: Historically it was actually not uncommon for north European warriors to fight without chest armor. There are records of roman legionaries fighting this kind of warriors during their conquests.

Just because you hate "skimpy" armor does not mean they should take it out. There are people who feel the exact opposite of you. They are also playing the game and they also want their moneys worth. I feel that Bethesda is doing right by adding VARIETY. IF you don't want skimpy armor, don't wear it. As to the "don't want to run around naked for the first 5 hours" Oblivion had iron armor in the tutorial and i am willing to bet that there will be some starting "non-skimpy" armor as well. I also agree with the whole whole Conan the barbarian thing, it gives more of an epic feeling, which is what they were going for.
I personally like the added variety and don't mind they "skimpy" armor as long as there is non "skimpy" armor in comparison. My favorite thing about TES was always the freedom you had in your choices, which I believe covers what armor you wear.

Pretty much this.

"it should ONLY be full-covering armor" is not a good argument. A great deal of people here like the face that it's VARIED. And you know... just because the "official army outfits" are full-covering, doesn't mean that adventurer gear has to be. Some warrior prefer lighter, more revealing armor (as my nord would say: "why hide in a can? I can just crush it anyways!")

Look up Roman armor. It's kind of skimpy. It would make no sense to have all armor meant to cover you up entirely, as the OP suggests.
