What's with the skimpy armor?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 2:58 am

It's an RPG. Deal with it.

/thread.

I don't have to "Deal" with something that I'm buying. They should make it "Deal" with me, I'm the consumer.

Actually it's Saxon armor. Barbarians were real, Conan is not. What most people think of when they think barbarian is made up stereotypes.

What armor are you wearing? You seem almost impervious to humor.

I'm wearing the "Street Clothes" armor set. It's protects me from attacks by tickets that say "$500 fine for public nudity, and disturbing the peace."

Oh, ah, that armor is going to chafe in some very uncomfortable places... good thing all the races have spray-on underwear to protect their nether regions.

I went into this thread expecting chainmail bikinis and getting myself riled up over how stupid practically and aesthetically they are.

I got flustered up for nothing. :sadvaultboy:

So, you want a "No Skimpy armor" toggle in the settings?

If only Beth was able to make Skyrim "Deal" with everyone. We'd have no issues whatsoever

Pic 2 looks like starting equipment to me, a really worn-out sword on his back and some basic clothing, probably not even armor.

I usually play as a lightly armored guy in tes, so this doesn't bother me at all.

There's actually quite a few that you haven't posted which are not skimpy at all, for instance the guards in the video, and the picture of an orc.

Most of those you posted are leather armor. Its not like they would have protected much anyways. Besides, Dovakhiin's armor looks to me like he's just wearing the pauldrons. They have other screenshots with him wearing those same pauldrons, but with an iron cuirass underneath.

Seems to me this is a case of selective exclusion. If you bothered to look at any of the others screenshots (the shot of the orc, for example) you would see a vast amount of armor that covered a lot. In addition, I don't see how the Dark Elf is wearing "skimpy" armor. So he's missing armor on the upper arm and that's skimpy?

The thing is that both MW and OB had realistic armor. This isn't WOW is the TES.

Dude, there are some that have exposed flesh, there is plenty of armor in the real world like that. Why your still on this "Nothing is realistic waaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!" when people already showed you the orc in full armor and both elven armor plus look at all the concept art as well. Some armor is just more open to allow more range of motion, it's realistic, it exists in real life.

Skimpy or not, it looks WAY better than Oblivion's leather armor.

And...That's what counts right..?

After all, it's just a video game, not real life, which so many people tend to forget.

Look at all the examples of armor so far, what do you see?

I see armor thats extremely skimpy and that's not covering much. The armor on Dovahkiin doesn't even cover his back, and the one on the khajiit only covers one of his arms and just a small section of his chest. Last time I checked armor is worn for protection, not just looks. Skyrim is also a cold place to live so why is everyone running around like there going to go swimming at the local beach on a hot summer day? I actually HATE the look of the armor. I'm a history buff and the two things that I can't stand is armor that's either over the top, with random stuff jutting out of it, or armor thats basically a frying pan on a string. I hope they have more realistic armor in addition to this stuff. I'll still like the game if the armor looks like this, but I'm going to have a hard time ignoring the fact that swords are being deflected off my body by one cooking pot and a whole lot of air.

They've got it about right. (though not on the second picture.. but that guys is probably not wearing any armor)

Not everyone (especially not an adventurer) wears a massive suit of armor. Especially not much more than a cuirass. they are covering their most vital areas and leaving the rest unprotected for mobility.

Evidently you can't be that much of a history buff otherwise you'd realize that most of the people wearing armor in TES are freelance adventurers, not armored warriors preparing for a field battle.

Yeah, a bit more of cloth would be nice. Confused frat boys love seeing them skins on their buff-bodied toons though, so I dunno if I'll get my wish. I want my elite Nordic warrior to sporting http://scribalterror.blogs.com/.shared/image.html?/photos/uncategorized/2008/03/08/viking.jpg look if possible.

If my guy had to look like that I would never play this game as that dude and his outfit look like a bad carol burnette show costume worn by a gay guy

Freelance adventurers still cover there skin. I never said everyone wears massive armor, I said that everyone wears armor that actually protects the vital parts of the body, WHICH IS THE POINT OF WEARING ARMOR IN THE FIRST PLACE!

The second pic its not the full armor, if you look the first picture and the background (background 3) of the forum you can see the full armor, in the first pic i guees that he is wearing a leather armor under his clothes, and in the khajit one (the third pic) its almost the same armor of the undead, only without a chainmail, and also, he is an archer! he is not suposed to wear a full body iron armor!

No, I'm the consumer, and I like the way it looked. /thread

Seriously, you guys are making a fuss over nothing. Or should I start complaining that the heavier armor screens released so far don't show enough skin?

It is selective exclusion, we're only talking about the skimpy ones here, not the full body ones. I have seen all the screen shots, I know that there are some full body suits in the game.

What does it matter if they are wearing a shirt or not under their armor? It's not like a cloth shirt is going to protect them from a blade if it gets to their non-armored parts of their body. Also, we've only seen a couple of screens where the character didn't wear any armor except a bandolier. Maybe that character is fearless and doesn't plan on getting cut? If someone chooses to use that armor, it will be reflected by the fact the character won't have any armor value, that's the players choice to make their adventurer unarmored and it always has been. There are some people in real life that refuse to use armor while fencing because they think it makes them more of a man (or woman) to fight and come out okay without armor. It's not like your seeing a legion of half naked people storming a city.

Leather may stop blades but clothing will not... not in the slightest. Showing skin is irregardless.. if you dont want to show skin then put a damn shirt underneath; Im fairly sure they are giving you that option.

And 2/3 pictures you showed there do protect vital parts.

Another thing I'm fairly positive about is the fact that armor is made up into 8 peices, and it's quite likely that in the trailer and those *select* screenshots people are only wearing 1-2 pieces of it.

Things will be fine. I am certain that in those particular pictures they just showed leather and fur armor types to help with imagery. There's a lot of Norse influence in Skyrim and I think it is bad ASS.
