What's with the skimpy armor?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 3:12 am

Look at all the examples of armor so far, what do you see?

I see armor thats extremely skimpy and that's not covering much. The armor on Dovahkiin doesn't even cover his back, and the one on the khajiit only covers one of his arms and just a small section of his chest. Last time I checked armor is worn for protection, not just looks. Skyrim is also a cold place to live so why is everyone running around like there going to go swimming at the local beach on a hot summer day? I actually HATE the look of the armor. I'm a history buff and the two things that I can't stand is armor that's either over the top, with random stuff jutting out of it, or armor thats basically a frying pan on a string. I hope they have more realistic armor in addition to this stuff. I'll still like the game if the armor looks like this, but I'm going to have a hard time ignoring the fact that swords are being deflected off my body by one cooking pot and a whole lot of air.

I dont think dovahkiin is wearing armor, that could just be his pauldrens
and it makes sense in a cold climate because metal is freezing so the less the better

Pretty sure in the gameplay trailer there were examples of full armor.

It's leather armor, hopefully not the default leather armor.

Leather
Fur
Kinda good point (is it Iron?)
Undead creature with hardly no use for armor anyways. It is probably what he wore when he died. What's more he doesn't fear death as he is undead so he has no wish to preserve his life. He only kills because that is what he is made to do.

Go look at the Elven Armor and tell me it's skimpy.

Because Skyrim is so badass, anyone who fight barely need armor.

Conan says "Hi!" :)

Seriously, though - it's not a "realistic combat simulator". It's a game, a heroic game. With "Macho Nord Barbarian" as a major feature of it's advertising. So, yeah - there's exposed skin on armor. Even on a guy running around in a snowstorm. Because he's a Macho Fantasy Hero?! :mohawk:

I'm pretty sure that the heaviest armor (steel plate, ebony, etc) are all going to be like they were in Oblivion - very very bulky and covering.

They just went with a different theme for the screenshots - maybe they thought that the more rag-tag leather and hide armor looks "cooler".

Just because it's made of leather or fur doesn't mean it should cover only parts of there body, same goes for the iron armor.
I understand their trying to make the undead look creepy. Their armor makes sense compared to the others.

Yeah, and in 1:40 and 1:45 in the trailer are some more examples.

Yeah, a bit more of cloth would be nice. Confused frat boys love seeing them skins on their buff-bodied toons though, so I dunno if I'll get my wish. I want my elite Nordic warrior to sporting http://scribalterror.blogs.com/.shared/image.html?/photos/uncategorized/2008/03/08/viking.jpg look if possible.

Having grown up on fantasy novels of the 60s/70s/80s, and cover art by Frazetta, Caldwell, Vallejo, Royo.... the really huge and bulky plate armors just bug me. They seem so clunky and unwieldy. "Fantasy" armor ftw. :D

The thing is that both MW and OB had realistic armor. This isn't WOW is the TES.

Eh, most WoW armor is incredibly huge & bulky, lots of extraneous spikes and shoulderpads that would crush a Clydesdale. Not a fan of it.
(It's also generally very colorful/cartoony. Which doesn't match with any of the artists I mentioned.....)

(When I'm not using mod armor, Enchanting lets me layer Shield spells all over the lighter-looking TES armors, giving me the protection of the bulky, ugly stuff, without being nearly as "big".)

Don't forget that Skyrim is mainly housed by barbarians, and barbarians generally have much lighter and flexible armour than classic medieval full-armours. (which not many people actually wore in battle)

Real armor (that actually protects you) is big and bulky. Armor in the Medieval ages ranged form 50-80 lbs. Skimpy armor makes you die.

On the medieval ages there was no magic , or Argonians or Dragons... "Fantasy Role Playing Game" :turtle:

If armor is skimpy what's the point of wearing it? It's supposed to help stop big swords, axes, and arrows form destroying your flesh bits. Women have never had skimpy armor in TES, theres no "dealing" to be gone.

Correction. It was heavy. That's not the same as bulky. Full plate was surprising agile. You could run, jump and do cartwheels in the stuff.
