What's up with ... no women?

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 11:01 am

Patience ladies and gents. You will not be disapointed by the women of any of the races ;) personal guarantee. They can all look super hot or ugly. And it will not be hard to make them look either or if you choose.

Thanks again for that new tidbit, vsions. After reading most of the articles today, they were saying we could choose our character but no one ever actually talked about tweaking how our character looked and I wondered if it would be all pre-sets we had to choose from. It didn't seem likely because Bethesda always lets us tweak but other things had been taken out so I wasn't sure.. Now we know.

Now about that female armor.... :D I have a question I'll add to Meet The Devs. Have a great one. :)

Realism is for real life, imagination and creativity is something that is rapidly disappearing in the gaming industry, so I'm very disappointed that LA Noire is once again yet another male lead only Rockstar game with the same tired, no imagination, no creative take on the concept by not allowing the player to choose the gender of the main lead.
When I play a game I play for a little escape from real life, not go right back into it again and be lumped with a male lead I care nothing for.

Real life is what we live everyday, why should games be yet more real life? So I won't be buying that game, just as I didn't RDR and deeply regretted getting older Rockstar games because they're always the same tired male lead and have been for too long.

I'm glad to see the confirmation that Skyrim will have gender choice, though nothing on if the console versions do, hopefully they do. I'll keep my eyes open for more information. Not fond of PC gaming.

While I'm glad characters can actually look vaguely attractive (as is commonly said, they really didn't previously) it still bothers me that the beast races and orc females have the capacity to look 'super hot'. I mean, they're beasts right? There are some good looking cats out there, but I wouldn't quite say I'm attracted to them, you know what I mean?

And I know they're not actual cats, but the point still stands. Doesn't seem right. But perhaps I'm just a pedant, I mean I really don't want beast females to have breats. Why would a lizard have mammary glands?

Hey man Ive seen a hot Klingon or two... not to mention Neytiri from avatar? Keep an open mind man, I dont discriminate :hubbahubba:

Yeah but the Neytiri were designed by a crack team of people who wanted to make something that was simultaniously cute and animal like (so you would feel sorry for them) and attractive. Which is why they fill all of those criteria for a lot of people. It was marketing ploy for an altogether shallow movie.

Don't take it the wrong way, I just want beasts to be beasts. I guess I'll hold out though, the khajiit/orc screenshots still look fantastic and it's only really a minor niggle.

The console versions will be the same as the PC version; and in fact everything we've seen so far is of the Xbox 360 version. You've got nothing to worry about.

I just don't understand why lack of women in a game would make it hard to support the game. Women or not, it's going to be the same game.

I like him that way, he's a Nord and a warrior and pretty representative for the brutal atmosphere of the land :goodjob:
Although I won't make a character to look like him (maybe a Nord woman after I play the [censored] out of the beast races) I like him the way I liked Spartacus in the tv series.

See, I don't know. I would cast that guy for a bodybuilder on his third steroid breakfeast, but not for a warrior. See from the back, as we often do, he just looks weird and veiny.

As a general note, wouldn't the campaign for reducing gender bias be better served by striving for factor independence rather than equality. By trying to enforce closer numbers an additional bias is added rather than removed.

Or otherwise put: It doesn't matter if character shown is X or Y or Z, character is a character VS we must balance the characters of X type, Y type and Z type with a forceful scaling factor because otherwise it is inherently (type)ist.

(I bring it up as I've just been emailed the annual diversity questionnaire with work to monitor the levels of type of person in the physics department. My argument is that we need more physicists in physics instead of trying to force one group into considering it more than any other group.)

I hope this isn't interpreted as racism or sixism.
Also, I apologise, this may be going way off topic.

ReinaHW said it perfectly: "When I play a game I play for a little escape from real life, not go right back into it again and be lumped with a male lead I care nothing for."

I completely agree. I'm a woman and I want to play as a woman. I identify as a woman and I'll care about my character as a woman because I am one. The only game I can see myself playing as a man might be Batman because obviously, he's not a woman. In RPG, I can be me and I'm not a man. I hope this helps.

I would argue that "women or not", it wouldn't be the same game. But I'm not going to argue about it. My original post was written in a moment of frustration. I didn't not notice the two women in the gameplay trailer, as Killmoms has already pointed out.

As for my OP, I'm frankly very sorry I brought it up. So for the third and final time:

I'm sorry for my original post. I apologize to the Bethesda team for suggesting in an way that they were sixist.

Umm . . . no, it's not. If you're a female gamer, you should be able to play a female character. Not having that choice available is like the developer stating that they never intended that a female would want to play their game . . . meaning that the game was only designed with guys in mind. Thankfully Bethesda does not leave us out. :)

They haven't shown even one Argonian or Dunmer, what's your point?

There is a Dunmer shown in a screenshot but you can't see his face.

Youre taking things too personally. There are lots of groups who never see the light of day in games

All in all, everyone should be thankful for what BGS has done thus far. I know I am (even with my qualms).

A female main character hasnt really been shown too much. Why? Because most gamers are males (especially TES players).

This. I'm a girl and I always play as a girl, it wouldn't be the same otherwise. Although I was never concerned that Bethesda wouldn't include women, I understand that a lot of the developers are men who may play as men primarily and that's just what we get to see with the early info. Eventually we'll get our fill of 'hot female bosmers' and the like but til then i guess we'll wait in suspense. :)

why would that not be supporting wemon
if more wemon were put into the game, that would be more attractive to a male gamer

To be fair, Women make up the Largest group who are often not represented in games or just represented as a big chested barmaid. ( although I thank Bethesda for never exclusively portraying women like that )

Ask yourself ... how would you feel if Bethesda were to announce that the Dovahkiin was female. Would not being given the option to play a guy bother you? Do you think it would bother other guys? Would you feel it was the same game if you had no choice but to roleplay a female?

But such isn't the case, here, Bethesda being Bethesda.

Although I would have liked a trailer with a non-generic PC. A female Dovahkiin would have been awesome. People would have less problems with that than expected, too : it's just a matter to make it work.

In all honesty? Yes, I do. Too many games these days don't have the option, instead it's male only.

Every TES game from Arena to Oblivion has had gender options. How does giving a list of games that have nothing to do with Bethesda change that? The gender option is so ingrained in the series that it never even occurred to me that they would remove it.
