Gregreo here will be happy to tell you:

FIRE SPELL
I feel my flesh burn, instinctivly rip the burning cloth off and stamp on it in an attempt to smother it.

FROST SPELL
I feel the coldest chill imaginable attacking my bones, my organs. Breathing is difficult. How to best describe it? It's like a thousand knives stabbing you at once.

SHOCK SPELL
The pain is too much to describe. I feel like my heart is about to explode, my insides are on fire.

DRAINAGE SPELL
Exhausted, weakness, faint. Trying to lift my sword and shield is impossible. I can't move.

DISENTAGRATING SPELL
Actually, this is an interesesting spell. It doesn't effect me physically at all. The only thing it does to me is cause irritation and much inconvience, especially if my sword is broken. Then I'm forced to fight with my bare hands. Good thing I'm strong enough.

I just got shocked the other day so that feeling is just fresh in my mind. Granted, this was a small shock going up my fingers. I've been burned, too.

I'd assume a direct fire bolt would feel a little like this
"As I attempt to correctly aim my bow at the conjurer's head, I see a white-red flash speed towards me. I either roll and have to lose my shot, get my shot and lose my arm. I quickly roll to the left, releasing the arrow from my grip hoping to distract him. I pull another before the smoke from the fire fades. It is too late, as a second one crashes into my right hand, and sends a singe through my arm and lights my bow on fire. I try to get up and charge him, but he throws a third one into my stomach, almost sending lunch up and I fall on him. I try to take a skull to my left and bash his face in"

Oh, I found another old snip from Buffy's Journal where she discusses how painful magic can be:

* * *
"Silence, tree hugger!" The Altmer's face had twisted into an ugly sneer. "I hope you carry more of value than the last few merchants." A menacing blue glow formed in her hand.

I was flustered, but didn't have time to curse the fact that I'd been expecting a snarling man, not the pretty elf that had timidly introduced herself to me the day prior. The green magic that would free my dancing cobra was just beginning to grow bright in my hand when Caminalda released her spell. The column of frost tore into the flesh of my left side, spinning me around, fizzling my spell and forcing my mouth open into a scream. Stunned and reeling from the pain, I turned towards her again to see the terrifying blue glow reforming in her hand.

My panic response took over and I managed to quickly wrap myself in the safety of invisibility. Despite the agony from my wound, I quietly slipped to my right. Her spell flew through the empty space I had just vacated and exploded the bark of a nearby tree into icy shards. I managed to circle behind her. To my horror, Caminalda spiked the air with a burst of pink magicka that was well-familiar to me. "You can't hide from me, little one." Her poison-laced words oozed the confident knowledge that her skills vastly exceeded mine.

Where were those battlemages?!?

As she began scanning the area, no doubt for my pink glow, I surrendered my invisibility and launched a weak fireball into the mage's back. I was staggering now, and didn't know how much longer the pain would allow me to stay on my feet. My mind raced aimlessly, unable to focus on my next spell.

Suddenly, Caminalda jerked violently as she was lit up by a bolt of lightning that came from the thick brush to her left. Before the crackling sparks that danced from her spasming limbs could subside, a massive ball of flame flew past me and engulfed the mage, bursting her gown and hair aflame. It was Caminalda's turn to scream. The heavily armored battlemages raced in after their spells, and quickly silenced the mage with flashing blades.

By the time I could smell Caminalda's burning flesh my vision had narrowed, grown devoid of color, then gone black. I grabbed the frozen wound on my side as I felt myself falling.

Let's throw in a variation here. If your character has complete resistance to the fireball, either from items equipped, or race characteristics, how does that affect the sensation? After all, that's probably the reason you'd survive. Do you not feel the spell's effect? Feel the heat, but no pain?

Note that I'm considering only Resistance. With Absorb or Reflect, you either get hit with all the damage, or none, and the level controls the chances, so when they operate, it's like the spell doesn't happen. I can't recall if 100% resistance suppresses the FX shown, but at anything less, you still show flames when hit by a fireball, which can make it hard to see where you're aiming. So do those flames affect anything other than your vision?
