Yea I just realized this is for pre order bonuses and not CE items. I read it wrong. I edited my post and went with a special sword.

Because it provides extra incetive to not only just get the game but get it as early as possible? And they are usually provided as a download code.

They're giving you a bonus if you pre order. It's like a thank you gift.

Personally, I wouldn't like any in-game items for when I preorder the game. I got a bunch of them for Dragon age 2 and they just made the game easy. I wouldn't mind something that doesn't really benefit your character but serves for a more aesthetic role.

Oh... How weird

Well in that case, I would think it should be something optional, and not really change anything major about the game. So people who haven't got that copy are missing out on a quest or something, but maybe the option to take an enchanting ring of sorts or a mount (unicorn I guess) available from the beginning. I think I'd prefer something physical like a map or something, which, as pointed out, is more of a collector's edition thing I suppose.

I remember the days when you pre-ordered to get the game the day it came out rather than just to get extra stuff. I guess it helps them gauge pre-release potential sale numbers but I don't think it really deserves extra content.

Other AKA nothing. Pre-order bonuses are just a bad idea. Mainly becuase they're US exclusive most of the time, but even if they aren't then it's restricted to large chain brands. The smaller towns which don't have a large game retailer and rely on smaller local stores get screwed. Plus it's always different for each store so you never get all of them without buying multiple copies.

All in all I just find the idea annoying. Skyrim will be a brilliant game and doesn't need to fall onto that kind of marketing gimmick.
