What's wrong with being Dragonborn?

You're the chosen one in nearly every TES game. Nothing has changed.

You're the chosen one in nearly every role-playing game. Nothing has changed. Unfortunately.

Actually...
Spoiler
we've been told that there might be a few other Dragonborns that still live.

Dear heavens, people that want to actually put more emphasis in some unique roleplaying aspects in a RPG. Who would've thought?

If you dont want to be Dragonborn, dont start the MQ. Like Nerevarine, or the chosen one from Oblivion. Todd already said that Dragons dont show up automatically at the beginning, so Im sure you'll still have the option to not start the MQ, effectively never being, or becoming Dragonborn.

That's how you are by birth. It's not so much if you fulfil the prophecy, but when.

And I doubt lowly commoners will know you as dragon born. Unless you do a world affecting quest like saving kvatch :)

i really dont see the problem. it gives everyone a little bit of common ground. if im not mistaken. we dont become dragonborn. we were born that way. or am i getting something wrong? and why would you not want to be? if you werent then you wouldnt be able to use the dragon shouts.

i would be more concerned about all of us having to be prisoners. (which i also have no problem with)

you are whoever you say you are. People that make a lot of characters who have their own prerogative etc. may have no interest, desire, or even the skill to tackle world changing events. The farmer, or street performer couldn't care less about Skyrim in fighting, or dragons. the great thing about all TES is the ability to say "Sorry Esbern/fate/the gods etc. the prophecy was wrong. In fact, I was never even incarcerated, it was just a nightmare brought on by a bit of undigested potato."

Of the dozens of characters that Ill make, only a small handful will have the ability, or desire to be Dragonborn/save Skyrim/Nirn etc.

i get that. ive played elderscrolls games before. and have had characters that just hunted and sold meats and pelts. and other such things. but you cant help how your character was born. but like you said its your choice to follow that quest about it. maybe i want to be a woodworker why would it matter if i had a dragon soul? my last post was mainly for the first play through. i dont know many people who dont follow the MQ their first time around.

The players can choose to "RP" that everyone who calls them Dovakhiin is mistaken. I don't get it.

But, you know, that's how TES players are. They b--ch and moan no matter how good the game is if it doesn't EXACTLY fit their expectations and desires.

Only thing I'm complaining about is that we know that we are Dovahkiin before even playing the game...
I think it would be better if it came as a surprise (kind of like in Morrowind).

Not much to do about that now though so pretty useless to me to mention it :P
Maybe a thing for Bethesda to think of for the next game though?

I see where your coming from, but what if that isn't even the biggest surprise of the game? Bethesda may have revealed that to make us interested, but there could be other secrets that we don't know about yet. This isn't Morrowind, we shouldn't expect the hype to Skyrim to be the same as before.

If I never start the MQ, then Im effectively not DB. The game wont recognize me as DB, so its not hard to RP that you just are not and suspend the belief of it. If you or anybody wants every character of theirs to be DB, thats fine, but some dont and some wont. I know what you meant, Im not arguing, just stating what some of us do. And ES is better for it IMO. It really lets you RP whoever you want. Turning the cRPG into almost a tabletop-esque setting.

I don't mind being of exceptional birth. As long as you don't start off god-like. Many great stories start with a "marked" child with a great destiny. Its up to the story and players then to fulfill that goal.
But like Luke Skywalker, you should start off as a snotty punk kid and GROW into your greatness. Some games make you god-like from the very beginning and it just doesn't work well.

I found it kind of funny how in one video after he killed the dragon he shouted "DOVAHKIN!" Is that kind of like yelling your name after a battle?
