What's wrong with being Dragonborn?

Post » Sat Jun 18, 2011 7:02 am

I have notice that some people in this forum are complaning that being Dovahkiin is messing up thier role playing thingy.. I mean it's no different then being the neverar (misspelled?) in morrowind. And I thought it was better than being a nobody in Oblivion. And plus you could stil roleplay as a different guy by ignorong the MQ. So how is it affecting roleplay?

imo it doesnt ruin ur roleplayability due to the fact that youre character wont know taht hes dragonborn until later in the game PROBABLY

I'm actually excited about being Dovahkiin. I liked playing as Martin's little helper in Oblivion because it was different.
But now you'll be the main character, which is also good.

my only question is, wouldn't being Dragonborn automatically put you in the running for leader of the empire? i mean Martin is dead, the Septim line ended, they need to find a new emperor, so why not you?

besides you are a better chance than Otaco at least. and just because it been 200 years after oblivion does not mean they have an emperor.

You're the chosen one in nearly every TES game. Nothing has changed.

Well it seems that some people has not realised it yet. I mean I need to know how can it ruin the roleplaying part of the game because so far you can just ignore the MQ and you're guy finds out later in the MQ like you said.

Only thing I'm complaining about is that we know that we are Dovahkiin before even playing the game...
I think it would be better if it came as a surprise (kind of like in Morrowind).

Not much to do about that now though so pretty useless to me to mention it :P
Maybe a thing for Bethesda to think of for the next game though?

Some people just prefer to be the unprophesized nobody that makes their own way, like Daggerfall or Oblivion to a lesser extent. They feel that titles or prior notions of their fate gets in the way of whatever story it is they wish to tell via their own character.

Of course the irony is in the following: "Each event is preceded by Prophecy. But without the hero, there is no Event." -Zurin Arctus.

Whether the player really is the Nerevarine (or the Dragonborn) is still very much up to them. One is not simply a prophesized hero by nature; that's a path they must arrive at by walking.

Two things could've improved it. 1) Not forcing the Dovakhiin early in the game and 2) Me not knowing I am until I play.

As someone who spends COUNTLESS hours with this game over a span of multiple characters, some I like just being normal, everyday adventurers.

I agree, bgs shouldn't give us any info pertaining to the games they make, hell should just shut down the whole forum site and leave us in the dark till we buy the games in good faith.

Well im pretty sure you're guy dosent know he is dovahkiin untill maybey around 30% into the MQ. that is enough time to ignore the MQ and Roleplay as another guy...

Anybody who didn't realize they were going to be the Nerevarine by the time they left Seyda Neen probably should find a new hobby. I figured that one out on my first playthrough at age 11.

Let's say i make a mage, i can't learn the same effects of the dragon shouts just through spells, so i'l always be a dragon shouty mage, it's only a small annoyance, no big deal, but at the same time it's not exactly a plus either from a sandbox point of view, it is having to take on somewhat of a pre-made role.

I don't want the game to tell me at every corner, that I'm Dragonborn, especially if I'm roleplaying an assassin.

" Hey there, Dovahkiin"
"So I herd you liek draguns"
"HALT Dragonborn, you've violated the law, scum."
etc.

You should get known as dragonborn during the storyline.

Other than that, I'm fine with being dragonborn

While i agree that id rather not be told about it in advance....you could also blame yourself for constantly looking up info about the game. You cant stay around the forums all the time/ look up all the info you can find about the game and expect to not have some details spoiled for you.

It is not a big issue for me, but I roleplay as a normal-ish citizen often and almost never use armor so it could be kinda rough if I cannot play the game without fighting dragons. I'm guessing it is an exaggeration, but they have said things like "there is no way you can avoid fighting dragons" etc.

I guess a kinda reasonable concern could be the worry that slaying dragons will be kinda just a brute force thing and that characters that like to be a little more creative will be forced into a different play style. I don't think Bethesda would do that though.

Not knowing you are the Dovahkiin until late in the game can be a surprise, if you know what a Dovahkiin is. I had absolutely no idea what that was until I heard Todd say it in an interview. If I was halfway through the main quest, not having any idea what a Dovahkiin is (much less knowing the word existed), and then suddenly figure it out would not be much of a surprise:
*PC talks to prophet, PC realizes he/she is the Dovahkiin*
Me: "what the hell is a Dovahkiin?"

I know. I'd just wish there'd been a way that Bethesda would have chosen to market the game so we get to know much of the game but without getting to know what kind of special person you are destined to be in the game :P

That's what I would want Bethesda to do with their marketing for their next game.

Nothing is wrong with being dragonborn I hate bethesdas marketing skyrim up to this point though.
If I didn't know (and love) Oblivion, Morrowind, Daggerfall I definitely wouldn't buy the game from the things I saw till today.

To me, its not about being dragonborn, but who I am, and what class I roleplay.

I could be a dragonborn sorcerer who enjoys terrorizing villages with my storm call shout (and my dragon allies), and my powerful fire spells (This is who I want to be on a second playthrough). Hopefully we will have wind type spells as well so I can unleash a powerful tornado.

Or, and for my first character, I will be roleplaying a nordic warrior, who just happens to be dragonborn. The fact that you are a dragonborn doesn't have to impede on your roleplay.
