What's wrong with Oblivion?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 1:53 am

I've been on this forum for a while, and in that time I've seen a lot of people expressing their hate for Oblvion, if only subtely (such as "After Oblivion, I have no hope for TESV," etc.). Now, I've been playing Oblivion for a good amount of time now (40+ hours), and I fail to see why there seems to be so much hate for it. I like it a lot, and while I don't adore it like Fallout 3, I enjoy the game and story. I admit, I've never played Morrowind, and probably will never get a chance to, but it seems like there are some huge differences between Morrowind and Oblivion that make people hate it. So, would any of you haters out there kindly express why you dislike Oblivion? Don't flame or bash anybody, try to keep it civil.

Oh, and I'm fully aware that most of you probably have a huge list of reasons why you hate it tucked away in a file somewhere, so feel free to break it out, I know you've been waiting for the chance to :P

Hm, most of the people who come here, like this game pretty much.
So do I. Thats why i shelved FO3 and came back to Oblivion.
There are a few things that needed to be adressed, but hey... which game is bugfree anyway?

The problem is elitism of a few of the Morrowind fans claiming that console players needed seven shades of s**** beaten out of the game before they'd understand its complexity.

I see no reason to say that Oblivion has no lore; you need to make your own ideas rather than reading a book, but it makes incredibly useful contributions to the lore and has a considerable amount of information if you look for it about everything from Mankar Camoran to the Renrijra Krin. The accusation that it is a typical good versus evil game is not true, and at least some of the people who claim that it is already know that.

Any complaints about Oblivion that cannot be logically argued in the game's defence are those that are essentially 'it's not Morrowind.'

So people like it less than Morrowind because it didn't introduce more lore to the story? Well, I can see how they could think that, I mean, I'm almost done with the main quest, and have finished all the quests for all of the guilds, and the only thing that seems as if it will be part of the lore is when

the Elder Scroll
was stolen, but even then, it was eventually returned.

Is that it, or is there more to the hate?

It's more accessible. Accessible obviously means "dumbed down", of course, rather than being more enjoyable while retaining depth.

Yet there are mods which solve all of these problems.

So elitists are pissed off because Oblivion was made accessible to the unwashed masses? :goodjob:

@thread title:

not a darn thing. Re-re-replaying it right now, as a matter of fact. 150+ hours into it and barely scratched THE LOST SPIRES, the Fighter's Guild, the Mage Guild and the main quest.

Moderately modded with a 85% slower levelling plug-in. Sweet!

Kind of. Its like if they took a Tolstoy novel and turned it into a 100-word picture book for Kindergarteners.

(I'm here because I'm playing Oblivion now. I like it overall, especially compared to a lot of games, but I am still a Morrowind loyal.)

Nothing to do with elitism whatsoever, more to do with the mentality of a large selection of gamers. Almost every title out there has a following and when any game evolves or moves on, it almost always leaves a selection of players behind and if we're being honest, they would denounce anything that proceeded it no matter how deep they had to delve as to acquire that opinion.

It's happened with the Civilisation series, Total War series, NWN, Diablo etc etc. It's nothing new and will happen with the next instalment too.

I think those guys are the complete fan boys, who love Oblivion so much that they are pissed off at Bethesda for not making it perfect, since we all know Morrowind is the best game to ever exist, perfection in every way.

 Either that or they want a game catered to them, not the normal population.

I quite agree with this. You also see it with Fallout 3, the latest Zelda-game (Twilight Princess) and the Final Fantasy-series. The latest game is often scorned as not being worth the disc it was written on by hardcoe fans. They want Morrowind 2, Ocarina of Time 2, FF VII 2 etc. Having that said, it is also true that games have changed the last ten years. Or have always changed, really.

Yup. You should have seen all the hate for Morrowind when it was first released. You'd have thought the world had ended or something. It's no different with Oblivion, and will be no different with TES V.

Nostalgia goggles. That about sums it up.

I tried Morrowind again a few days ago and all I can say is that it's painful. The graphics makes my eyes hurt, and lets not mention the TERRIBLE combat and the extremely slow movement. Mind you I have at least 200+ gameplay hours in Morrowind from years ago.

Oblivion is, from an objective standpoint, superior.

My point is that the Oblivion haters are Morrowind players with extremely thick nostalgia goggles.

Wow is Morrowind really that bad? Why did you submit yourself to such a torture for so long if it was such an awful horrible game though?
Did you have nostalgia goggles on? :D

To each his own I guess. there is a way to fix all of that on both the xbox and PC verisons, PC has the council command to race the speed attribute and any other attribute, Xbox has the Spell glitch. Who cares about the graphics the game has much more depth, seriously it seems like the only thing people care about these days is GFX. The combat is terrible I can give you that, but its not that much better in Oblivion all you do is swing and block untill the opponant is dead, I would like to see an actuall sword duel in the next game.

I don't like oblivion for the simple reason of the end game. Since this is in the oblivion general and not the oblivion spoilers section i can't say to much.
