What do you love and hate so far in F4?

Post » Sun Nov 29, 2015 8:07 pm

Like: exploring/looting, upgrade system, building (even if it's a bit wonky), combat, general graphic atmosphere, Dogmeat and his teddy bear

Dislike: some of the console-like GUI stuff, the dialogue wheel, and no npc/no quest has yet made me give a hoot, hence I find questing very unmotivating so far. But I can ignore that in favor of wandering/crafting/fighting for hours and hours instead, so whatever. :)

Another thing I like is the way settlers interact. I built a Rec House and surprisingly, after business hours, many of the settlers went there to get food at the bar in back and chat with each other around the pool table and juke box. It was also really cool that i built a cooking stove near the bar and I realized the guy running it actually used the stove to cook some food. It's little touches like that which make the game amazing to me. It made Sanctuary really feel like it's a little community.

Love:

  • Let's assume for now, almost everything... except.

Hate:

  • The UI

Literally everything about it form element location to the animated PipBoy to the constant bells and chings of kills and discovery to the lack of key bindings to the flashlight icon popping up when your PB light is on. I would have guessed that we would have had complete control of each UI element independently. Alas, that is not the case.

  • Dialog Wheel

I want the character to calmly say "No". Yet, the actual in-game response is a line of dialogue that tells the NPC to go do bad things to themselves.

  • Voiced Protagonist

I'm removed from FO and thrown into FO Effect.

EDIT:

  • Lack of Checks

The lack of speech checks and potential quest giver requirements to check against the character's stats, perks, inventory... etc.

I love the world building...best yet in a Beth game. Nice collection of dense city and rural areas. Overall ambiance is very good. Weather effects are vastly improved.

I like the improvements in combat, the crafting systems, and the way power armor now feels like a vehicle, even down to raindrops on the visor.

I'm not so sure about the dialogue systems. I'm having the same problems as I had in Bioware games of my character not responding in what I consider to be a proper fashion. Voiced characters don't bother me as much as I thought,

I dislike the UI and controls, but I'm getting used to them.

I don't understand, nor have I really used, the whole settlement sub-game.

I don't hate anything in the game, the only real issue i have is with the PC keys not being remappable to what i'm use to, it's affecting my dialogue choices quite a bit in the game as i keep accidentally choosing an answer i didn't intend to and it's also affecting the settlement building side of things as well.

Dislike:

Voiced Dialogue. Ive come to terms with it, but its the only thing about this game I feel is a misstep.

Love:
[censored] everything else. I recently had a encounter in the Memory Den, trying to keep it vague but my god, the references to the NCR, a man going east and "running out of road", the entire sequence with those memory things, it is something ive never seen before in Fallout, and my god is it great. And it has changed my characters personality, that encounter, he has toned down his "Might makes right" talk, and is now a might more sympathetic to those around him. As the game progresses he is developing much more than other characters have in previous games, and ive just barely scratched the surface.

Pretty much everything so far. The part i love the most is the new Power Armor system it make me feel like a true member of the BoS

Hate:

Dialogue wheel. I wish i woundt get lock away from some questions.

And the bug on the settlement, right now every time i leave any of my settlements the stats of it go down to 0.

Love:

I'm actually loving almost everything. I'm on the phone so I'm not going to go into a ton of detail, but it's all very well done and feels more polished than most Bethesda games. It's not bugless but it's far better. The writing and quests are better than Skyrim, which isn't hard, but still great.

Hate:

The dialogue system. I'm not entirely averse to a dialogue wheel - I've seen it done somewhat decently. For example, Deus Ex had simple one-three word summaries, but when hovered over, showed you either all of what you say or a much more detailed summary. However, FO4 does not do this. The summaries are incredibly short and rarely indicative of what you're actually going to say. For example, at one point my spouse asks me to go to the park. I chose 'Sarcastic' and my character ACTUALLY said "Oh, like I want to get pregnant with your baby again." Which is really not at all what I would think to say. The wheel is limited to only 4 choices every time, which is a huge shame, especially when it's similarly limited EVEN IN ROOT DIALOGUE. That means that if I want to turn in 5 quests to Garvey, I can only turn in one at a time, and if he's my follower, I don't get all the follower options because I have to turn it in/talk about the Castle/whatever. And finally, when they DO have dialogue in say, a conversation where I talk about Shaun. 3 options were me talking about Shaun in an extremely sad way, essentially the exact same option. The other one was asking a question and then returns to those 3. I chose an option, thinking I could sort of skip talking about Shaun or maybe say something that was rather noncommittal. However, no matter what I chose, my character sounded grieving and devastated. Not only could I not SEE this would be the case, but there was no difference in the options. I had no chance to act as a character who didn't care about Shaun, or who was more business-like, or the normal 'I-love-him-I'm-so-worried' type. Most of the dialogue options have been like this, forcing my player into one 'voice'. Most quests have little to no alternate options. It's removed any joy of role playing for me. I don't RP as much in FO games, but it's still a complete shame. I hope but don't expect Beth to change it.

The companion wheel. It being based off the dialogue, which exits when you look away, is clunky. I'll call dog meat, get near him, he turns away, and then I have to chase him to do something.

love the overall game hate the monotony of quickly running out of weight & having to address my inventory almost constantly yes adding a few points to this or that will help this still trying to build a solid combat character love the settlement thing fun to play around with but very overwhelming w/ all the settlements that you can build / help out it would help out a lot if ALL WORKSHOPS in ALL SETTLEMENTS shared the same inventory not very realistic but would same a lot of time & headache

Love: the concept of the settlements, the crafting, Dogmeat, and the subplot of trying to rebuild communities.

Hate: the entire implementation. I've finally given up, for now, trying to fix the completely bugnuts insane UI. And not just that, quest and NPC bugs as well.

I realized I wasn't playing, I was beta testing and reporting bugs the whole time. VATS doesn't work if I use AHK to rebind keys so I can actually play, and even if they unlock keybinds we still have to deal with not one but more than one "everything button."

I am about at the point of never buying a console port - which would at least save me time.

Loving:

-The immersion. From the first nuclear storm, to seeing the first Deathclaw, this game really sets the mood well. Love it!

-The scenery is pretty fantastic.

-The music score - just as creepy as the storm.

-Crafting and building - takes my mind off fighting for a while.

-Dogmeat - Much better than Dogmeat of Fallout 3.

-Voiced dialog, though the awkward silence gets annoying at times.

-Sprinting - oh, how this has saved me many times.

-Finding "Legendary" enemies in weird places. The funniest: Legendary Radroach. :D

Not Loving:

-The glitches. The worst is the sinking into the ground glitch which limits my movement (the same glitch affects placed items, which "sink" when you return). The missing weapon glitch is also annoying. Thankfully, going 3rd person and returning fixes this, but it's not something I should need to do.

-Dogmeat playing Superdog from rooftops. Thank goodness this dog can't die but I'm not wasting stimpaks on his stupidity.

-The lack of a tutorial on building, running power, and settlement management. I spent a good few hours learning what I could, but I still feel there's things missing. Had to reload from a save several times as I ran out of material learning.

The Really Not Loving:

-I hate, hate, hate the d-pad assignment of multiple items. While I have no problem with healing over time, I can't stand the fact I have to press, move, then select. By the time I select the one I want, it's game over because the game doesn't even slow time temporarily for me to select. Hate it!

-The click "LS" to hold breath while aiming. Ugh. This is the worst button combo on a controller. Couldn't we use RB instead? I tried to remap these buttons, but the click LS didn't change.

-The "all in one" menu listing svcks. I miss how items were grouped in Fallout 3. Why was this taken out?

Despite the faults, loving this game. :fallout:

I love almost everything about the game but hate the timed blocking. I'm a fencer in real life and its embarrassing how poor I am at blocking. Then again, I'd most likely not be able to parry in real life if i always kept my weapon down by my side except for the spit second of parry.

On the other hand, I really really like shooting grenades out of the air in VATS.

First, the things I love about Fallout 4.

1. The combat is beautiful. Fighting Feral Ghouls is frighteningly awesome! Mole Rats actually tunnel underground and fly up from the ground to attack you (Rad Scorpions shouldn't be doing this though. At least I don't think they should).

2. The environments are awesome. The programmers have done a fantastic job of bringing the post apocalyptic world to life. You have to be constantly aware of the environment too. That dead body your walking past may actually be a Feral Ghoul waiting to jump you from behind! And more then once I've ran up a hill to a area and ran right into a group of baddies and have had to turn tail and run to save my life.

3, Crafting! Crafting! Crafting! I for one have never been big on crafting in a game. But a couple times now I've actually lost track of time while tinkering with weapon and armor designs (Weapon way more then armor, honestly) and even more time putting together settlements!

4. Yeah, gotta give a shout out about settlements. It is a awesome expansion of the Fallout universe to be able to build your own settlements. However this area is going to be on my dislike list as well.

5. Commericals!! Honestly, this just goes to show me that the people designing this game really loved what they were working on. So far I've only seen the PIP boy commercials for Charisma and Intelligence. But both were so awesome that I actually had to take a few minutes before I could load my game and play.

Now for the bad.

1. Bugs! Right off the bat after loading the game I had the problem where the game stopped recognizing my keyboard after conversations. It happened in the vault at the very beginning, and also when I met Cogsworth afterwards. After that though, it hasn't happened since. Also the work around for the PC causes the game to move too fast making lock picking nearly impossible. So I had to take the work around out and just hope it doesnt happen again. But like I said, after 40ish hours of game play I would say it hasn't happened after the 3rd or 4th hour.

2. Crafting! Wait, I can turn my standard 10 mm pistol into a silenced 10 mm Sniper rifle, but I cant make my own ammo? Hopefully this will be addressed in a future patch (Or expansion if need be...)

3. No weapon degradation, that and there being no hardcoe mode is a bit of a step backwards from Fallout New Vegas as far as the franchise goes. But. with the massive amount of crafting you CAN do, it's something I can live with.

4. The story. The problem I have with the story isnt so much that I hate it. It doesnt bother me that my character is going off on a mission to find his (or her) missing baby. The problem I have is more with some of the choices or lack there of in the game. For example. I hate the Minutemen. I have the choice of not doing those missions, but honestly I would rather do those missions and then when talking to the people I am helping shift the rewards from one faction to another. With high enough Charisma maybe I could tell the people "Hey, actually. I'm with the Brotherhood of Steel. Those Minutemen guys are a bunch of losers!" Of course, with the game and story being as large as it is. It would make the programming for it almost impossibly huge. I think that's also the reason why the game is a bit more linear then past Fallout games, it's just way bigger then what we've seen in the past.

5. Settlements do need a bit better of a tutorial then what they have now. And as other people have mentioned. Building a settlement is a bit tougher then it should be. If the game was to put us in a bit of a top down view instead of trying to set buildings, walls, etc from a first person view. It would be a bit easier. And the AI of settlers are a bit on the weak side as well. But all in all. I dont hate it.

I have 4 things listed for the love and 5 for the bad categories. But honestly, the good in this game FAR outweighs the bad. I would give this game a 9 on a scale of 1 to 10 and say that it is a must buy for people out there who haven't gotten it yet. While it is still early into release, the game does run amazingly well except for the 2 times that I had the keyboard problem. The people at Bethesda have done a exemplary job and should be extremely proud of the game they put out.

Now get your asses to work on Fallout 5!

I hate that the physical disc for the PC only had about 5gb of install data, and I am having to download the remaining 19gb. People buy the physical copies because they have restrictive Internet caps, Bethesda.

only read the first page, but the biggest thing I dislike(really don't hate anything) having to micromanage the settlements. It just makes me not want to bother with it. All settlements should be able to defend themselves. I am not the wasteland police.

Oh yea all the bullet sponges everywhere. when I shoot someone in the head with a .50 sniper rifile and all they are wearing is a fedora that head should disappear. at the very least stagger them on bigger targets.

So far, the only thing I disliked was being forced into the role of happy married couple in the beginning. None of the characters I would play, would ever get married or have a kid.

This is easily remedied when the spouse dies and I'm set free into the world.

I've only played the game for a day and I'm still figuring out how it works. I have some regrets, like joining the Minutemen. Might have to start again.

Dislike not being able to build walls that don't have holes in them, use drywall or paint, pick up more of the debris laying around, including large bushes around properties, or in general just have things more aestetically pleasing for my settlers. I find base building to not be worth it so I just stick beds in existing buildings while modders fix the building system and create better building materals and let us either tear down more buildings or place building materials in areas that now are "red" and don't let you, to do things like cover up gaping holes that are everywhere.. in the walls, roof, etc. I personally don't consider any building that lets any moisture intrusion to be viable whatsoever. They'd fall apart very quickly due to dry rot.

Being able to power light bulbs is rather hit or miss... sometimes the conduits will be right next to the bulb and it won't turn on, however reloading saves sometimes fixes these glitches.

I don't like level restrictions in games... kind of like Clash of Clans where you can only upgrade certain items at certain town hall levels and many other games do this as well... level you up in a very "controlled" manner... I prefer it more like Final Fantasy XII where I can upgrade anything I want at any time... meaning there shouldn't be level restrictions on any perks..

Having negatives posted first, I'll say it's a fallout game, and I love it like I love all open world games like Skyrim, GTA, Just Cause, etc.. it's unique in it's own way. Love to explore... love base building when modders fix the buildings themselves, love accumulating stuff and the backstory, etc... my negatives may seem to outnumber the positives but there's too many positives to list individually.

I like the lack of Weapon degredation. The fact is with proper cleaning and lubing most weapons will fire hundreds to thousands of rounds and when they finally do need work it's a simple cleaning... some of the weapon decay systems in games like Far Cry 2 were over the top where a weapon would just die after 20 shots.

Not really. You'll be beaten over the head with it over and over in the main storyline, in the side stories, and even random npcs who have no way of knowing your past at all making commentary about it. My personal favorite was when starting a romance an npc said something along the lines of "but you seem so in love with your husband!" My reaction was, what? Really? When did I ever even discuss this husband with you (or anyone except when the dialogue forced it) much less express extreme distress over the loss?

My character's actual response? "I can love you both!"

Wow. That's some epic storytelling right there. I immediately reloaded my previous save and decided that romances in this game only serve to remind me of this backstory that I don't identify with nor like in any way. I got the achievement, so no need to bother with this feature any further now. There's literally no way to even rewrite your headcanon to make sense of how your particular character came to be in this marriage with this kid, because that's not the story Todd Howard thinks you should play and he will remind you of it at every turn.

That's probably the biggest thing I dislike about the game, aside from the bugs. This isn't my character. It's Todd Howard's character, and that's not really what one expects from a Fallout or Elder Scrolls game. Once I accepted that I moved on to enjoy other aspects, but I'll never forget that Fallout is no longer a title I can recommend to folks as the kind of game you play to really build the character you identify with and love. It's now just like every other game with a white, straight, military male default protagonist. They really lost some identity here that set them apart from other developers.

Stuff I love?

-Building settlements. Wish they had devoted more time to this feature and fine-tuning it, but even in its current simplistic state good gravy it's super fun. I've spent 15 hours on this alone.

-I'll never grow tired of blowing the faces off raiders and feral ghouls.

-Exploring the wasteland and stealthing through buildings. Getting scared when enemies I wasn't expecting appear.

-Modding weapons. I love it love it love it. They really feel like my weapons built for my particular fighting style.

-Gathering junk! I remember the first time I played Fallout 3 and explored that supermarket. It was definitely my autism acting up here, but I had to pick up every single tin can and piece of junk in it. Everything. All of it. I didn't feel that way in the ES games, but when I stepped into the world of Fallout it just felt like everything would be useful and I should take it. In the end it just translated to maybe some extra caps, but in this game everything truly *is* useful.

It's affected me so much that now I see the objects in real life and mentally invoke the image in my inventory of the materials they break down into and think about what I can make. It's insane, but I love it love it love it.

So really, my main complaint is the reason I chose Bethesda games over others no longer exists. I hope we don't see this style of storytelling in the next Elder Scrolls game, but I won't hold my breath on that one. And I won't be playing another Fallout title, even if it is gifted to me like this was.

Likes-
-graphics. They look great
-weather. Omg I don't need to download a weather mod now. Tyvm for having rad storms!!!
-lighting. Yet another thing I don't need a mod for. Done very well.
-enemies. Dear lord, this is the first time ever in fallout that mole rats actually feel threatening lol. Pretty much all the enemies feel threatening now.
-combat. Feels good.
-power armor. Actually feels like power armor. Did a great job here.
-armor. Tyvm for splitting up armor. This is one addition from old TES games that I am very happy that came over.
-exploration. Nuff said. Combined with graphics, lighting, and weather, I'm loving just walking around.

Things I don't like.
-feels like a borderlands game with a fallout setting and Bethesda looks. Flame me all u want for saying it, as long as I keep it in mind it's a sandbox fps, I'm enjoying it.
-INGAME roleplaying (not in my head) feels EXTREMELY lacking atm. With the heavy backstory, it feels like even Fallout 3 was a lot better at recognizing ur roleplaying choices. Hard to explain but so far not very far in but still have hopes for later :)
-backstory and voiced. Backstory has to much in it imho (which everyone is totally free to disagree with) that at times it feels limiting. Finding a father and being raised in a vault or a courier who a stranger who shoots u and buries u for dead is okay because I feel like u can work around that, and while having a military background can be doable (like u could have become a lawyer after u got outta the war etc) but the whole married and finding ur son is imho pushing it a bit to far, a bit to much if that makes any sense.
-weapon and armor degradation. For the love of all that is holy, why didn't they include this? We get it for PA, why not everything else? Right now it's like skyrim, once I have a certain type of weapon, why do I need the others I find? To sell or to break down. I'm having the same problem I'm having in skyrim...well okay not as bad as in skyrim. At least in this game I'm hoping u can't upgrade ur first weapon to be better if not on par as the epic weapons (aka daedric in skyrim). Now instead of grabbing weapons to either sell, break down, or to carry a few for backup to repair my upgraded weapon, I'm now looking at duck tape and gears with more excitement and usefulness than the 10 weapons AND armor I'm finding. I'm finding myself actually not even looting weapons and armor now because they don't feel or seem important when I already have the same type already.
-dialogue. It falls flat so many times but my main gripe is not knowing what or the tone of what's gonna be said until after I select it.
-no Ron Perlman saying "war. War never changes." In the intro. When I heard someone else say those lines, I knew I was in for something totally different. Just felt wrong imho. I'm so used to hearing him at the beginning of every fallout game that it gives me that small excitement every time I start to play fallout for the first time. Small complaint but there.

So far I'm trying to ignore my gripes and what I was expecting from past games in and didn't like the game at first. To many red flags for me, but once I view it as a action sandbox exploration game, I'm having a blast. I tip my hat at Bethesda for all and it's a lot of improvements they made, but the only let downs are the ones I posted. Even with my gripes, I'm still enjoying it and hope I will continue to do so. I still have my older games though if that doesn't happen.
