Well, my first character was named Steve. I am playing as Larry now.
This is sort of a hold-over from playing MMOs. I usually try to pick a name that opponents will hesitate a bit when they see it. Usually allows me to get the first hit.
For my: Bosmer/Wood Elf (sneak-thief, assassin, archer) i went with Saehar Nord (one handed, heavy armor, sword/shield) i went with Erik (after a co-worker).
i give my characters a name that fits with there race's lore for instance in oblivion my Argonian was named Blue-Scale my Bosmer was named Feramor and my Orc was named Korgan gro-Arod
I typically try to come up with a name that just fits how I imagine the character to be. For Oblivion/Skyrim, I hit up the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages to find sample names appropriate to each race. I only give first names in-game, but I've taken to thinking of my most recent elf as having the surname "Erryndrun" because of what his REAL occupation is, Dragonkin or no.
Khajit Thief: Kunta Kitteh because he is a black cat and its a joking reference to the TV series "Roots"
Orc Warrior: Morgorth (Lord of the Rings reference, the first dark sorcerer before Sauron)
Wood Elf Archer/Mage: Have yet to name this one, was thinking of the obvious LOTR reference Legolas, but might go with a character less well known such as Haldir.
Actually its Morgoth not Morgorth, but who cares, right? This is your char
Naming my character is part of the process I go through when I create it. I spend a lot of time thinking about my character's name and its origin. I come up with a new name with every game I play so I've never used the same character name twice.
In Skyrim I'm playing a Dunmer named Grimthar Broodhelm (also know as Grimthar the Brash). He was born in Cyrodiil and raised by an old Imperial soldier in Anvil until Pirate Raiders killed his adoptive father. He fled Anvil and made his way to Skyrim to try and start a new life. He never knew his birth parents.
I always name my character to sound like other names of that race. My Khajiit was Ja'Rasha (the Ja prefix means single, young one, or fool) and my Argonian is Mako. Not sure if that name has any meaning in ES, but Mako was an asian dude who did voice acting for Uncle Iroh in Avatar: TLA. I think it sounds close enough to other Argonian names.
My first character was my gamertag (Lucread), as is usually the case with RPGs (DCUO, Guild Wars, Dragon Age, etc). My second (currently most used) character was my real name... and was made to look fairly close to what I look like.
I name my characters, at various times: something random, something random inspired by other sources, a name (or a variant on a name) that I've used alot before, and my "gamertag" is based off one of my longer-running character names.
So far for Skyrim, it's been "something random".... first two characters are Kaylin and Skyr.
If it's a melee type, I always call it 'Slain' form the same named comic series, If I play a mage type, I invariably call it 'Rincewind' from the Disk World novels. If I include a last name, always Nephilim.
I usually take the name of a David Gemmel character as I love his books and he has covered pretty much every archetype possible in this genre. I like an instant back story.
Either that or something totally stupid like my mage Mr Squishy.
Anat -> persian for archer IIRC, so yes a female archer. Jobius -> Based on my first name, same with Ju'b for my Dunmer. Rash'd Wifestealer -> Khajiit rogue obviously
I usually named a character from books by JRR Tolkien, like..Beren, Beregond, Beleg, Celeborn, Grima, Grimbold, Dernhelm, Eomer, Eomund, Elfhelm, Eothain, Erkenbrand, Morwen, Luthien ... and the list goes on. Beautiful names.. simply beautiful, how can I not use them?? :celebration:
