Usually something clever. Like my current character Claire Voyance = clairvoyance. Before her was a Nord fighter named Thor a'Zyyne (thorazine).

My very first character was another Nord fighter named Blade 'n' Bone, Speak to Me!, which of course is just a silly random name.

I normally name my characters after movie or book characters, sometimes I'll take a name directly from old or ancient history.

My skyrim-born redguard for instance, is named "Kenna" which is an old norse name meaning 'to have knowledge' or 'to know'.

The next character I make will feature in my fan-fic for Skyrim. His name and background is already set and if you read the beginning of my Oblivion fan-fic you'll see what his name is... and you'll have the background on him.

I've tended to stick to single names on my characters.. But I tend to use names inspired by other media, or something random that I either made up or can't place. If I like a name, I'll re-use it in other games.

So far I have 3 characters.

Marissa - used in Oblivion and made it up randomly
Daenerys - Gotten from Game of Thrones
Yamiri - random

I try to come up with names that integrate into the game world. My current Nord character is named Aewyn Eawulf. After this character I plan to create a Dunmer assassin/thief who will probably be named Amaryis Sarethi.

I tried to be somewhat creative, it was kind of a failure.

Dracomnious

I figure by the end I'll be omnipotent among the dragons... turns out I was right, and more so than I expected, since they're really a bunch of wusses. So, I guess it fits, but clearly I'm no good at this whole naming thing... just killing things.

Random and inspired also, I guess. In Skyrim I have Achilles, inspired by a historical person, and Flying Snow, inspired by the film 'Hero'.

In Oblivion I had two characters with random names I gave them, and one named after Alexander Skarsgard for a joke.

I named my warrior Breton, Quellus. Derived from 'quell' meaning, "to supress or crush completely". And with his 100 in 2 handed weapons, it's damn well true too.

Khajit Thief: Kunta Kitteh because he is a black cat and its a joking reference to the TV series "Roots"

Orc Warrior: Morgorth (Lord of the Rings reference, the first dark sorcerer before Sauron)

Wood Elf Archer/Mage: Have yet to name this one, was thinking of the obvious LOTR reference Legolas, but might go with a character less well known such as Haldir.

As an Imperial, I always go by Raminus, a beautiful name courtesy of a charming gentleman who those of us acquainted with the Arcane University will know.

A tad off topic, but how do you manage a Monk character?

Something that fits the character. Like roman-ish names, like Serenus, for Imperials, Nordic names, like Harold or Hrol, for Nords etc. Generally something a member of the race could have been named.

I briefly had an Imperial battlemage called Arsonius (arson plus roman sounding ending :) )

I found myself to be very clever, then I hated it. I need a "believable name on my characters otherwise I cannot get "into" them..

So my Nord light arour twohander dude is called Thjorulf the Bear ;)

My Altmer is called Merari :)

I also go for this.

My main character is

Altmer. Andoral

My second main character is

Dunmer. Otheral Lordiril

Then I have

Altmer. Urura
Altmer. Astar
Breton. Antonio Perrick
Breton. Claudette Perrick
Breton. Darrious Perrick
Breton. Edea Perrick
Dunmer. Dreven Thoryan
Dunmer. Valdor Romalin
Dunmer. Ralairya Thoryan
Argonian. Glim-Sal

I will make more eventually. Some of the people listed above are families that is way there are a few of the same race with the same last names.

I typically name my character based on race or game.
In TES I use my 2 daughters names and combine them.
So when they watch they love to see 'themselves' fighting dragons.
