What do you think about athlete salaries?

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 11:44 am

What do you think about this? I mean, the players of the NBA and NFL themselves are paid well in the multi millions if they are stars, which is not including the endorsemants they get. I don't even want to know how much Peyton Manning and LeBron James and Michael Jordan make a year. Do you think that these people, who are paid for playing a game, deserve such large amounts of money?

Yes, but the "guaranteed money" is getting ridiculous. I mean, the kid hasn't even proven himself to be a capable performer in the majors (NFL, MLB, etc.) and they're already throwing millions and millions of dollars at him. It should be a "Ok, here's a couple thousand so that you can feed your family incase you do get injured or svck, but the real money won't come for another two years until you can show us that you aren't a bust."

No, I think it's BS. Maybe if the justice system (among other things) wasn't skewed so far in favor of the rich and famous, I wouldn't mind as much.

While I don't think they "deserve" the money for what they do, professional athletes tend to make millions of dollars because they sell millions of tickets. People pay to watch them. Where else will the money go? It's not like the team owner really deserves it any more than the players.

The money is certainly more than they need, and what they're doing isn't of any particular value to society, but it's not quite just "playing a game". They're like modern gladiators, destroying their bodies for the entertainment of the masses, always trying to stay on top because one slip and they're gone and replaced.

If we want them to deserve their money, I say we put lions on the field.

I see I was a dike. To be a bit more constructive than that, I don't give a [censored] because I think they are getting paid accordingly to how much people (as the society) are willing to pay them. I think that's perfectly circularly self-satisfying. You know, sort of like free market and all that crap.

I don't really care, but for all of the hard work they put in to become professionals, I think they deserve some compensation.

Yup, that's my job - summarising other people's thoughts. :hehe:

Also, my poll option seems to have gained quite a bit of popularity...

Special people, with special talent get special treatment. That includes pay. I do think they get payed too much, but I think they should still get paid more then a most people.
EDIT: I voted I don't care, cause really, why should I care how much someone else makes? It's not like if they get paid less, I'll get paid more.

Well since you got me started...

THEY GET PAID WAY TOO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I mean come on. They are complaining that they aren't getting enough money? Heck I will go and train my body like they do (minus the steroids for those that use them) for as much money as they are making now. Seriously. if a coach came to me and offered me a spot on a team, and had me train, I would definitely take him up on that. I would be set for life!

Look at how much teachers, people that keep our cities safe, and people that help keep our country clean, make and then look at how much the athletes make, and you will see that they are just being a bunch of whiners.... freaking heck....

Its not totally their fault they get paid so much, professional sports has become a business and thats partly due to us the fans.I get why people are against paying them so much but there is nothing that can be done.

They are paid entirely too much for the amount of work they actually do. Every time I see them crash another of their supercars I think of how many worthy causes that wasted money could have gone to.

I don't get how they get payed more than people dying for their country, or doing things that benefit many. So what if they can throw a stupid ball, thats worth 10 bucks at most, if that.

Because millions of people will pay big bucks to watch them throw a ball. Cause and effect.

In the money world it's called "supply and demand".

No way. Hospitals, firefighters, charity etc...would benefit a lot from the millions athletes get paid.
