What do you think about motion blur?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 5:49 pm

I speak spanish, sorry for any wrong speling, ty :P

Ok yes, DX11 is nice, but, come on, look what crytek achieved with crysis 2... If they had used dx11 probably there would have been a lot of people (including myself) that wont be able to push the graphics to max. I can't even do it with dragon age 2. Even if I could, crysis 2 still looks better on "Gamer" (minium graphics settings) than most games out there.

But enough about crysis and dx11...

What I think Beth should think about for Skyrim, is adding some stuff like motion blur, so when you swing a sword it would actually look like moving fast.. to feel the kinetic energy, you know :P a lot of movement and hammer/sword swings will be present :brokencomputer: :toughninja: so that could add a lot to the visuals and overall feel to the game. Other stuff like ssao are welcome. So, I don't think dx11 is that necessary right now.

look at this example from crysis 1
http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/2641/ombbg7.jpg

Now let's dream... (motion blur: on)

Imagine a big dragon swinging its big wings flying towards you..
A group of wolves lurking in the dark.. you get to see only a blurred shadow behind the foliage and you don't know what it is
Arrows or spears (if they ever get into the game) passing very close as you run to get cover
Walls and rocks or traps falling over you or some unlucky npc

I think it'd do well in the game. What do you think? :D

Motion blur is okay. It can be annoying to look at sometimes though..

This is another one of those things that depends entirely on how they do it.

If they add too much of it I think it would just make my eyes hurt playing the game, but if it's just a subtle amount then I'd be fine with it.

Motion blur is a must if you want things to look natural. Most games crank it to far though. Older games like quake 3 with no motion blur running at 100fps look very artificial due to there being no motion blur. Things like motion blur , depth of field and dynamic lighting ( hdr and so forth ) make games look great.

Pretty much my feeling. I just don't like things being so blurry I can't see. My main issue is with the excessive motion blur while running.

so long as they dont overdoo it!!!

worst example is the hunter from l4d

motion blur should only happen slightly to things that are very fast, and when the player travels fast everything should blur slightly like it does in real life

Do it per-object, not screen. Screen motion blur is tacky, per-object massively improves the "fluidity" of a scene.

Also, a point: If crytek had used DX11 and you couldn't max out C2 anymore, it wouldn't look any worse, just other people could run it looking better. Why is that a bad thing?

You cant max dragon age 2?
Are you running a NV 6200 or something? lol.
Although yes, they should take atleast a little advantage with DX11 and have motion blur and other features in.

Motion blur can look great. One example I like is Arma 2. It may not be your cup of tea, but the graphics and movement look awesome as you look around. Some might find their eyes getting a bit tired though. Depends on your taste.

One thing I hate thats done quite often in games with melee combat is the colour blur you see as weapons are swung, it looks all cartoony. You see it in a lot of console games.

I loathe motion blur. It ends up looking fake and distracting. I never get the illusion that things are moving quickly. I just look at it and think, "Oh look - motion blur." Then I turn it off.

I'm not a fan. It seems that either I don't notice it at all, or I do notice it and it gives me a headache. So I'd rather not have it. Then again, just to be contradictory, it's possible that I've already not noticed well-implemented motion blur beyond it generally "looking better", so who knows?

I hate motion blur. If it's in-game, there should be an option to disable it. Or even better, adjust how strong the blurring is.

Motion Blur as sort of a stagger effect after the player takes a pretty nasty hit is good. Otherwise, maybe on consoles to compensate the lower framerate, but on PC, it's always better to just animate clearly.

Motion blur to me is one of those kind of effects that can either look really nice, or become really annoying depending on how it's implemented. Mostly, I think the key is to make it not overdone, because some games that have motion blur end up making it too strong and instead making it annoying. Though it must also be said that some games which include it just blur the screen when you turn around quickly, and don't do the blurring of fast moving objects thing.

So, should it be in the game? Only if it can be done well, I'd say, because motion blur isn't the kind of effect where you can say "Well, it's better than nothing." it's either done well, or annoying, and if it's in but done poorly, then I'm turning it off if the option is in the game.

I suppose you dislike TV and movies, then? They use heavy motion blur. Obviously it can be done badly (Oh my, it can be done badly), but done right you can turn 30fps into something smooth, and 60fps into actually sliding down a ramp made out of butter,

Gee...

I dislike motion blur in video games. Most of the times it's exaggerated to insanity,
I dislike motion blur in real life. Because the following day, your mouth will wake up to the sour rubbery taste of gin and tonic.

This.

I've never got the supposed realism behind motion blur, If anything it annoys me. Looking over those Crysis screenshots, if I was playing with that motion blur. I'd turn it off. Fast.

The only game where Motion Blur works is in Armored Core: For answer, but that's just to hide the really bland environments. The actual blur isn't bad though, it actually does give the sense of accelerating instantly to Mach2.

The thing is, that's not full screen, that's per-object. Fast moving things get blurry, you don't notice it because you can't reasonably track an object moving that fast, even at 60fps - that's what the blur is there to mask. If something moves too far in every frame it looks jittery, even at 60fps, but if you blur that it appears much smoother. I can't honestly blame peopel for disliking motion blur, the actual decent forms of motion blur are reasonably resource intensive, so you don't see them on console much, but when done well mblur is excellent. It's what every other form of visual media does, because it /really, really helps/.

It can be annoying. But I like a bit of motion blur say if your hit by a powerful attack and stagger or a huge explosion goes of right next to you.
