what do you want to play?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 1:57 pm

in the trailer you can see a guy with a lute in the assassination scene. assuming you can play the lute (like the ocarina in zelda where you have butons that represent notes and possibly a pitch +/-) what songs will you attempt to play?

ill start of with the song that most guitarists learn when they start to learn songs - "Smoke on the Water"

Gah! That would be horrible if Skyrim had any recognizable real life chimes. It'd break my immersion! :(

I really doubt we'll be able to actually play instruments but as for songs, I expect them to be orignal pieces composed by musicians Bethesda employs.

Stairway. Maybe Bron-Y-Aur Stomp, that might fit in pretty well (plus I know how to play all of it, unlike Stairway),
Maybe some Jethro Tull, they had a pretty medieval feel at times.
Ooo... I could just go all the way with the Nordic theme and rock some crazy Norwegian black metal. Real church-burner stuff. Emperor, Children of Bodom, Celtic Frost, Impaled Nazarene... Or some Enslaved (Viking Metal).

Actually, I'll probably just pick out a couple of notes and get bored with not chopping things up or taking things that are not mine.

Anyone ever played Lord of the Rings: Online? It has a pretty innovative music system, which features 37 musical notes. By default, only 24 of those notes are keymapped, and can be played by pressing the number keys 1-8, and then by pressing those same number keys while holding either Shift or Ctrl to change the octave.

There's also number of different instruments like flutes, lutes and clarinets. It really is quite something. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4QMtvk4ihg&feature=related

If it's possible to play music in Skyrim, I hope it's similar to this. Only higher sound quality of course.

Also, I have to agree with you OP about Smoke on the Water.

The way LOTRo did it was pretty amazing.

http://lorebook.lotro.com/wiki/Mechanics:Player_Music_System

"The Player Music System gives the ability for a player to have their character play real-time, free-form music in game. Players can either create music by pressing music-mapped keys on their computer keyboard, or by reading in automatically playing an ABC Notation file. The system supports a tonal range of three octaves, allowing for a broad variety of songs which can be played. "

Edit: Damn dude above me. MY IPHONE IS SLOW OKAY.

Holy crap thats perfect.
Sidenote, WOW, LotRO is a lot more Warcraft-y than I imagined in terms of meshes and graphics.

I should hope the proper animations are included, and that if a system like this were used, that NPCs more or less use the system, just predetermined notes sequences played out.

All this would be freaking epic!

Good point, who needs a sissy lute when my banjo is as loud and offensive as an acoustic instrument can get.

There needs to be a sign right beside the Lute seller that says "No Stairway To Heaven."

something that bothered me about guitar hero and rock band, is that people spent more time playing that than the time it would take to get pretty good at a real guitar.

as far as playing the lute in Skyrim, i guess if you want to role-play a bard you should be able to play the lute, but i personally wouldnt be spending too much time trying to play anything specific, unless the game had a quest for it.

I agree, lutes and any other instruments that may appear are probably things the player can't use, instead, you'll just see NPCs using them to play original tunes composed for the game. Though if we can play them and you actually get to play whatever music you want by choosing different notes (As opposed to just selecting from a list of prerecorded songs.) then I'm sure that anything I attempted to play would likely involve choosing notes at random and would usually be garbage without any structure, due to my lack of musical skill.
