What do you want to do in the game?

Post » Tue Jul 28, 2009 5:48 am

EDIT: Look here too, sorta related

How do you hope to play Fallout Online, both in the game universe and your goals as a player, if any?

If you don't understand the question, perhaps see below.
In game, I envision being able to play as a freelance mercenary/lone wanderer just trying to survive in a irradiated world and hopefully make it big or do something big, perhaps as part of a clan. I realise that sounds an awful bit too much like the everyday grind for some people, but personally I could enjoy being an above average bit player.

As a player, I hope to be able to play seriously without joining an out of game clan, simply because I don't enjoy being forced to do something in a game I'm paying for. Why do games studios have to fight and die? War, war never changes : (

Yes the "lone wanderer" playstyle should be largely reflected in the fallout mmo, but grouping should give different and supposedly better rewards.

You as a player should not be forced to group while leveling, and you should also be able to get decent gear from soloing, however this being an mmo and all, grouping should ofcourse be a LARGE part of the game. If you dont want that then you shoulndt be playing an mmo in the first place.

I really like the style where you can find solo content from start to end, but get enhanced rewards when doing group quests.

I think the big question here is what you are forced to do once you get to the end level...
Yes there should be TONS of content for the solo wanderer at end game, maybe some challenge dungeons with cool gear that you can only enter solo. But there should also be great loot that is different (not neccerary better) from the solo content gear.

Problem with solo content is that at some point everyone will have done it since its kinda easy... try enough times and you get it. Since you can do it when you want to you dont have to organize anything to do it and so its alot easyer to get. There are also major balance issues to consider when making solo content. Will every build be able to do this? if not then should it be different so everyone can access it? how about the rewards if its for everyone? and most important why would anyone do group content if solo content was so much easyer to access and gave the same quality of rewards?

Bottom line is that yes solo content is good, but the best rewards should always come from group content.

I've seen a few times that the focus of this game is going to be rebuilding, not just surviving. I love that and want to see what ingenuity they have planned for the rebuilding of society as a whole.

6-toed one-eyed cannibalistic jet-addicted tribal kleptomaniac who loves puppies and long walks in the desert - all of the above was possible in fallout 2 so why not here.Well except there wasnt a cannibal perk yet but hey...everybody can have a little imaginantion, specially in RPGs :P

I want to lead a raiding group towards nearly abandoned mine, clear it of radscorpions and others, that are attracted by smell of the dead, repair a mining machine and start robotic mine cart train towards nearby smelting plant and get caps for that for a day just to find out it's been taken control of by rival group so we have to play hide-and-seek with granades in the cave and get spare parts somewhere the equipment damaged in the process again.

I want to take control over a hiding spot like that with an elevator in Toxic Caves, with power suit charge units and assemble few robots to guard the caves.

I have been a fallout fan since Fallout 1 and have been looking forward to a Fallout MMO for years now.

Here are some of my ideas for the game...

These ideas are pretty simple

The abilty to construct more complex items from basic stuff and then sell it to other players would be nice. :D

Players could choose skills in such areas as weapon reapair/modification, clothes/armor, electronics, explosives and so on.

________

I had thought the game could begin with the start of the atomic war (or a few days before) with the purchase of the game being the purchase of ones vault place reservation.

Pre-purchasers maybe could have a 'Vault-Tec website thanking and congratulating the player for their wise choice while extolling the virtues of the Vault and advertising Vault-Tec products.

When the game is released (Vault opens) players may enter. Once the war begins players must enter the vault. Players joining after the war start date could begin game in Vault (been in contamination isolation for the time since game launch)

If the game were in real time players while offline could be considered doing manditory vault work/duties and resting with 'freetime' dedicated to more fun stuff such as surface recons, exploration of unfinished vault sections/caves, Vault politics and gaining skills.

The surface would still be 'HOT' with radiation and full of fresh gouls so only limited and well protected recon teams would venture out at first.

The unfinished vault sections could hold many a monster and danger.

Anyway thats my ideas for now :)

heh sorry i have a tendancy to get carried away in my own thought process.

On topic:
I want to explore and rid the world of evil!
I want to kill other players with my superior character build
I want to have a place to stash all my cool weapons and armor and to show it off
I want group pvp content with meaning and balance
I want to log on do a questline and get a reward (upgrade) for it wo having to spend time gather a group
I want to gather resources and be a crafter, make weapons and sell them at my very own vendor outside or inside my housing area
I don't want that vendorbot to be robbed since i didnt log in at midnight when a certan guild decided they wanted my gear

most important:
I want to be able to win in pvp bequase i played better. Not bequase gear/character build made it predestined that i would win

The Fallout experience, to me, was always about rebuilding the world I got svcked into. Here was a world destroyed by man, a LONG time ago. Nobody's around to blame anymore, we're all just trying to get along, restart, rebuild, and refashion the new world in our image.

Enter mutants, raiders, psychotic cults, ghouls, mobsters, gun runners, deathclaws, monsters, radscorpions, remnants of a bygone government, drugs, booze, guns, fast cars, loose women, gambling, kids who pickpocket you and the occasional atomic bomb, and you have a recipe for a steep difficulty level. Not to mention an interesting post apocalyptic world. At least for those us who're fresh out of the vault.

Add some distrust, malice, prejudice, hatred and good old-fashioned human stupidity, and you've got obstacles to overcome to make the people of the world band together to work for a common goal: Kickstarting the human race again.

This is what I'm hoping to see in FOOL, at least, for my own part.

-Pharl Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!

Not quite the thread for a protracted discussion but

Statistics says the market perhaps thinks otherwise And yahtzeetoo Although people may be arguing over the exact same outcome here... Why do games studios have to fight and die? War, war never changes : (

Thank you for linking those articles. Very interesting reading there. Although I don't agree with the last writer he does have some good points.

My point is however. Why would people group up? What is the reward for it? and why would anyone group up if they don't get a superior reward for it? I'm certanly not saying the best rewards should come from 40 man or 20 man raiding (I am not a fan of haveing to organise groups that big), but you should have to group up to do certan content.

And to stay on topic, I want to be able to group up with my friends and do challenging content.
I do not want to be forced into grouping when i do not want to.

yahtzee is a bit special ;) but love his reviews even if I disagree many times :P but a critic is a critic.

And yes, at some specific points grouping should be a must (like some really hard missions perhaps) but generally I would like to have the option to be alone or be in a group. Sometimes I want to do things by myself and sometimes with friends (or people I know are equally good as I am), don't want to be forced into random group events. Image

I intend to meet up with my brother from across the pond, buy a small shed in game, then sit in said shed taking Jet using the VATS system. It's cheaper than a real meth habit and you can pay monthly. Plus at 95% accuracy to right eye you are sure to get full bang per buck.

After two or three months of this we'll then venture out into the wastelands, carve out our own bit of turf near an I-95 overpass, and sell Jet cut with Brahmin blood to unbeknownst travellers/players.

After amassing a small fortune making addicts overdose we'll then set up an Architectural Design/Build firm within the Wastelands (Architecture Apocalypse is the name) for new building/defense projects, with a splinter firm for Green building review of energy weapon factories. We will of course accept bribes towards the acceptance of newly proposed unsafe energy weapons. WIP.

I want to spend time helping the unfortunate inhabitants of the wasteland rebuild a lost civilisation as best they can, building trust from those plucky npcs and forming lasting alliances with lots of semi-real people (if I can't see you I can't be sure you are fully real). Together we can make it happen.

If i've had a particularly bad day at work I want to be able to come home and then destroy all the good work i've done up to that point in a fit of mindless destruction, dashing the hopes and dreams of all those who had looked up to me, with such lasting repercussions that I feel the guilt of my actions for many weeks, if not months.

Above all I want to be safe in the knowledge that whichever exagerrated outbursts of emotion I inflict upon you all have no meaning as soon as I turn off the game. I will not be sharing my contact details.
