It's not overrated if you sincerely enjoyed it more. The fact that someone disagrees with a popular opinion about something doesn't mean said thing is "overrated." It just means you don't agree.
Yes, believing that something receives more praise than it deserves, which is line with disagreement towards a popular opinion, goes hand-in-hand with the belief that a product is overrated.
Ok, then your opinion is overrated.
In all seriousness, though, when people say that something is overrated, it comes off (to me) as a statement that the opinions of others are somehow wrong. IMO, it's more appropriate to say something like, "I didn't like it as much as others seemed to." Saying that something is overrated just comes off as condescending and self-important. I'm not saying that you meant it that way, but without citing specific reasons that something wasn't as good as it gets credit for, the statement just tends to rub me the wrong way.
I was hugely disappointed with Dragon Age: Origins. I think it had to do with the many years of waiting and anticipation, combined with unfortunate PR references to the game as the "spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate" (one of my favorite RPGs). It all persuaded me to believe that the game was going to be twice as good as it turned out to be. Almost everything about the game was smaller and lesser than I had expected. And I thought DA2 was even less impressive than DA:O. I honestly don't have the interest left to bother with DA:I.
I have to admit that a big part of what I loved about DA:O was the combat. At the time it was released, I was starving for a new game with good party-based tactical combat. Disclaimer: I played the PC version. I did NOT enjoy the combat on the console versions.
I actually enjoyed the combat in DA2 as well, but my interest in the game fizzled out before I could finish it due to the extreme re-hash of environments, the dependence on artificial "waves" of enemies to maintain combat difficulty, and the over-abundance of relationship sub-plots/sub-quests.
I will say one thing about DA:O: I thought its Tactics system was fantastic. Being able to fine-tune AI conditions (if X and Y apply, then perform Z action) was really phenomenal. But, with the exception of bosses, nearly all combat involved similar-sized groups of four to six enemies everywhere all throughout the game. That just really began to feel monotonous to me after a few hours. That they were spaced nicely around maps and just stood there until you were ready to engage them felt unrealistic to me also.
But I did enjoy the teamwork aspect of the game, at least for awhile. The companions, for the most part, were fairly interesting. It's just that, for me, it all got tedious quickly. The small number of things I actually liked about the game wore off quickly and I was left with a bunch of features that I didn't like. I haven't been able to finish the game yet, despite beginning it four or five times. But I actually plan to give it one more try sometime in the future. I don't give up easily.
Did you play the PC or console version? From your description of the combat, it sounds like the console version, which - IMO - had vastly inferior combat. I didn't lean on the Tactics system much, as I was playing on the highest difficulty, and if you didn't manage your group directly you'd be squished pretty quickly.
Hmm. Whereas the combat was my least favorite part of the game. Enough so that I've never been able to bring myself to play it again to try other quest choices. Even with gratuitous nudity mods.
But, then, I was never able to get through Baldur's Gate, either. I think I'm just not a fan of the whole "real-time-with-pause" combat style - if I'm going to have to micromanage a whole party, I'd rather do it fully turn-based.
When I can't sleep, I turn on the XBox 360 and throw in Skyrim or Oblivion and let the opening score do its magic. This technique is so effective, I can't use my Minecraft Skyrim pack because the soundtrack puts me to sleep.
In fact... nighty night!
I own the PC version. But... I always play all my roleplaying games on default difficulties. So maybe that has something to do with it.
To be honest, I don't play roleplaying games for the "difficulty." My main interest is in creating my characters and telling their stories. Combat is something I do to get to the "good stuff."
I've played so much ME3MP that I can add my next two most played games together and they are still a few hundred hours less than my total ME3MP time.
And If ME3 gets backwards compatibility I'll tack on another inordinate amount of time to ME3MP.
Ok, here′s my biggest one: I have Barbie for the NES
I play Second Life for two reasons... One kinda being a nostalgia reason (I guess. Maybe). The other mostly to be a -derp- and do stupid things, be it Moderate or advlt >.> (Don't ask and honestly, it is something I'm ashamed of).
Why? You planning to get it too?
Only played it once to try it out and it was a couple years ago now. But gameplay-wise...hmm... Stiff controls and uninspiring enemies and obstacles. You′re better off playing Chip n Dale - Rescue Rangers.
I don't necessary understand what you were trying to say so I have no idea if I should laugh at a joke or feel insulted.
No. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no no, no, no, no, no.
I would not let that bother ya heh. For a while I was thinking maybe its an age thing but no seems to just be a character Trait of some people I dont get. How could anyone be wrong with the games THEY like better or THERE favorite....If anything this you know might be an indication maybe (if you played it and really disagree maybe just maybe you missed something)
Still i Only agree with you on a few of those (at least the few we cross over on hehe) not sure about the Dragon age exactly what kind of orange are we talking here? Then again I walk around with Vampire masquerade/ jagged alliance/ Masters of magic-Orion (the first 2) rose colored time goggles so what the heck do I know.
Aye.
Usually, I just screw around in though and be stupid with some of the mechanics and such. Otherwise, I'm playing pool while listening to the Classic Rock station that is playing on the server I am on. However, I do poke fun at the NSFW people in the game because Science reasons, which is what I do feel ashamed about and kinda really hate.
