Just acquiring the Fallout franchise and making the Fallout 3 they wanted to make was a both a huge risk (since it is so different from its predecessors)
I don't see the risk in that, since the game's target audience is not the same as the audience of its predecessors.
No *major* game developer nowadays suddenly changes their way of making games. Everyone sticks to what they're most comfortable with at doing. Development costs are simply too high nowadays - and publishers demand return of investment.
Which gives me every right to complain if, As a customer, I'm not satisfied with their product.
For games that dare step out of the mold, look for indie developers or European game developers.
Are you sure? I'd expect that for indie developers to change the way they're doing things is a lot more risky than for Bethesda.
Bethesda can afford to make a game that won't sell as much, a small indie company (that has small budget and can't advertise as much) depends largely on it's audience remaining faithful.
Unless you're talking about debuts or people who do what they do just for fun. In which case I agree 100%.
Just yesterday I was reading an interview of Jeff Vogel (of the indie RPG company Spiderweb)
The interviewer asked him if he was considering making a different game and here's part of his reply:
I think about writing a different sort of game all the time. Every year. I’ve designed so many different games in my head since 1994. Some of them really excited me.
But surviving as a small Indie game developer is tough. It’s easy to forget that when you look at how many years I’ve been doing this, but I’m one good flop from closing up shop.
I have a niche, and I write very good games for it. And, when I decide what to write, I do have to take into account what will give me the best change of remaining able to buy food and clothing for my children.
