What's your favorite Magic Skill?

Post » Fri Sep 16, 2011 3:15 pm

I like them all, but alteration nudges out conjuration as my favorite. We will have to see how the spells work and are spread out in Skyrim to really tell which is our favorites now. Enchanting might end up being my favorite depending on how it works.

Good to see some love for enchant. I'm not surprised anyone voted for it since we haven't seen it. But the way it's described, breaking down items and capturing their essences just seems really cool.

Mine is restoration, but that is because I play more as a knight/cleric. Healing myself and others is what I prefer. Now, yes, I do use some Illusion and Destruction to help me too.

Nice! I was wondering is anyone was going to choose this. Yes, restoration seems to have a very cool aesthetic about it. I will create a character that focuses on Restoration, a cleric as well.

I think illusion is the most fun. Hopefully conjuration is handled better in Skyrim, didn't do much for me in Oblivion. I'm also interested in how enchanting is going to work as I have not played Morrowind.

Enchanters are the tony starks of the fantasy world. I'm all for enchanting as a skill to build a character around. And I dig what we have heard so far about enchanting, but only time will tell if in play it works well.

Oh ya, I forgot. Telekinesis is under alteration too. Maybe that spell will finally get some combat specific uses. :hubbahubba:

I hope they improve the means of healing companions in skyrim. The chaotic running around in oblivion made it really hard to heal the people with you.

Destruction. I love the smell of charred remains in the morning.

Destruction. Nothing beated combining all the offensive destructive spell types (Fire, Frost, Lightning and Damage Health) into one spell, calling it "Dimensional Burst" and beating the shiz out of everyone with it.
One of the many reasons I'll miss spellmaking in Skyrim :(

Alteration is my personal favorite, even though all schools of magics are useful in some shape or form. Destruction for attacking from a distance without switching to a bow, Illusion to make friends a bit fast and hid better, and Restoration for basic healing. Enchant is a close second since I love to use swords the most. Note I do play a balanced mix of combat, magic, and stealth. Alteration is my favorite because you can do a lot from walking on water, breathing water, and open locks without picks. Ultimately I find in all schools useful except for conjuration, probably because I'm powerful enough as is in most cases.

What is you're favorite skill in Magicka? Describe why.

It differs for me, but right now, I really like Illusion. I love the idea of being a wizard who has control of the minds of his enemies. He can turn invisible, make them rage, strike the deepest fear in their hearts, command their limbs, shut down their magical powers. He can see in the deepest darkness, with light, or with the eyes of beasts. And he can inspire his allies to victory. It's a unique playstyle to use mainly Illusion; I must be stealthy and strategic to manipulate the battlefield.

Destruction.... because it's destruction.

Always restoration. Creating thunder bolts, hitting someone with a sharp thingy or controlling minds are all easier if you are not diseased, wounded, finding your skills less effective due to sorcerous draining, or poisoned.

Conjuration -

It was always nice summoning up a storm atronach when breaking out of jail. And while the guards were distracted, I could summon up a quick bound sword and finish em off. ^_^

But really, it's nice having a personal buddy waiting for me to call him forth.

For me, Restoration. Saved my @$$ a lot of times in Oblivion. I usually plan a Crusader (healing + mace) for my 2nd playthrough. I have no doubt that in Skyrim I will be a badass crusader wielding a healing yellow glowing spell in one hand and a bone crushing mace in the other hand :D

I dont remember Oblivion's disease system or poison system being very punishing, unlike Morrow. The ladder's was much better because it gave a lot of value to cleric type classes. Oblivion it wasnt very necessary. Anyway, as for me, I prefer mixing potions to direct magic for restoring stats.

Conjuration! I freakin love summoning creatures, in general I love having control over another subject, so a close second would be illusion. I COMMAND THEE!

Can someone explain how enchant works?

You find a magic item, say a shield of frost resistance. You break it down, destroying the enchantment, and presumably being left with a normal shield, tbc. Frost resistance is now added to the list of enchantments you understand.
In future, you can use an enchanting altar to put frost resistance on anything, the strength depending on your skill and the size of filled soul gem you have available.

@BretonSorcerer, restoration and alchemy, the ultimate in self sufficiency.

I voted Conjuration. There's something awesome about ripping a hole in space-time and pulling out a rabbit scamp. Scabbit. I also love the Bound spells. There's something power-rangerish about it that tickles my inner child. In Morrowind, the Bound spells were incredibly cheap and lasted a full minute. Overpowered, even. It's too bad Oblivion smacked it hard with a nerf bat.

As for enchant, I feel it's going to be pretty cool again, and also have its own strengths. I think people are forgetting that some magical effects are only available through Enchant; a new feature is breaking down a magic item you find and using those effects in newer enchantments. [edit: lol wait answered already. Nvm!]

That sounds really cool. My first character was going to be a Bosmer thief/assassin but think its going to be some sort of Mage not sure on what race.

The important thing is you can be an enchanter without being a mage. This system doesn't rely on knowing any spells.
Also, there will be effects you can't get from spells. Looks like passive shielding might be out, for example you have to use a hand to 'wield' an anti-magic ward spell, but that is no reason not to have items with the old fashioned resist magic x%.

Favorite either enchant or illusion. I vote enchant because it had no votes (you jerks). Am I the only who uses restoration the least out of all the schools? I was always more of a alchemy kind of guy, health potions were always way more effective to me.
