What is your favorite 'The Elder Scrolls' game?

Post » Thu Sep 16, 2010 6:11 pm

I don't understand the hate (in general) towards Oblivion on these forums. I thought it was an amazing game and a great addition to the franchise. It won more Game of the Year awards than any of the other The Elder Scrolls games.

Daggerfall is still my favorite though. I am just wondering why it seems like a lot of people have it out for Oblivion.

Because we don't like it. At least I didn't.

But most people don't hate it, they just hate that they like it better than Morrowind.

Wait until TES 5 comes out and people start saying things like "I hate TES 5. Oblivions so much better."

I've thought about how that's probably gonna happen already.

Pff.

In terms of Development, if V continues the path Bethesda has been going with Fallout's immersion and gameplay, it'll be way better than Oblivion.

I don't prefer morrowind because it came first, I prefer it because I believe it to be a better designed game.

I too find it shocking the amount of sly jibes and general negativity thrown at oblivion on here. It's my favourite game and i just can't believe how much its hated by its own fanbase.

Well, coming from someone who played Oblivion before Morrowind, The game was generally a downgrade from it's predecessors. Most fans don't like when that happen.

Oblivion was as unique as a bowl of bran flakes.

Its quests and general gameplay style are pretty unique, far more unique than bran flakes.

...and Morrowind was a "downgrade" from its predecessor, so why isn't everyone voting for Daggerfall? Is it because it became uncool to hate Morrowind after it was no longer the new game?

Oblivion, specifically SI. I played it for the fist time last week and I loved the setting. If all of Oblivion were that setting and had more armor/weapon types then it would blow Morrowind away.

Not really. True, Daggerfall had more stuff than Morrowind, but it was overwhelming. Morrowind had just the right amount of content, or at least I think so.

When Morrowind was the new game, Daggerfall fans complained about it just as Morrowind fans now complain about Oblivion.

I know, but Oblivion was ridiculously simplistic. Even by other RPG standards it was an extremely small game. Ontop of that Morrowind had a better setting than all of the other games. It was unique and looked like they put a lot of effort into it. Oblivion wasn't so unique, SI was though.

I still love Oblivion though, just wish it was a bigger game. My thinking is that it was Beth's first game that had up to date graphics and is why it was cut down a bit.

Small? Oblivion?

The "this time it's different" vibe I'm getting from your post doesn't really mean much, and "better" setting is, like many things, an opinion. I can find many things I liked about Oblivion more than Morrowind. One day, Oblivion fans shall rule the forums. MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

...and then TES V fans, TES VI fans, and TES VII fans...

You get where I'm going.

It wasn't small, it was simple. I mis-worded it.

Well, Oblivion's setting was the typical fantasy world, while Morrowind's was something Outlandish and unseen before. You probably can find things you like about Oblivion more than Morrowind, but like you said it's all Opinion.

I didn't, I think Morrowind was a step up from Daggerfall's graphics and style. Daggerfall was huge and was a bit much for me and Morrowind toned it down just to the right level. Oblivion added more to the lore, graphics and style to TES series. As stated before I love all ES equally, but Daggerfall holds a special place for me.

P.S. Daggerfall turned Arena into ashes... :flamed:

Because Daggerfall is old, and came out when gaming was still a relatively niche pasttime. There are simply far fewer people who played it. The demographic gets larger every year, so even if 99% of the people who played Daggerfall thought it was the best game of the series, they're going to be overshadowed by the millions of people who played Morrowind and Oblivion.

In fact, the Bethesda website's news archive goes back to 2001. I don't know whether the site was around longer than that, but it's worth noting that Daggerfall came out in 1996 and Morrowind in 2002. When Daggerfall came out forums were only starting to exist at all. Odds are they had only a small window and a small minority with which to hate Morrowind before being swallowed up by the comparative tide of its fans.

So do you believe the forums will become Morrowind vs. Oblivion vs. TES V?

Probably. As countless Morrowind vs Oblivion threads have shown, many people have already decided on their favorite and aren't going to relent, even in the face of something they haven't played yet.

I'm sure the mods will love cleaning up those messes. :P

Well. let me think about it.

Since we are doing expansions as well, I would have to say either Bloodmoon or Tribunal.

I like Bloodmoon for Stahlrim Armor Pauldrons (I love those things) and general coolness (get it, cause of the ice?)

I like Tribunal for Royal Guard Pauldrons (look good with my Stahlrim Pauldrons), Adamantium Helmet, Pack Rats, Trueflame, and Barlizar's Mazed Band.

This is a tough one.

I didn't like Bloodmoon because it took me over a year to find a werewolf, and they were kind of lame.

I didn't like Tribunal because it took me a long time to figure out some of the quests.

So....

I voted Oblivion, because I like that better than both.

Constantly fluctuates between Daggerfall and Morrowind for me. I think people are vocal enough about their favorite game so I'm not going to go into specifics.

So basically most of your post is just you listing the good and the bad of those two expansions instead of just replying to the thread? what a waste of space.

Anyway i picked Oblivion because even though Morrowind was great, i just cant get back into it after playing Oblivion, ive tried like 3 times but i cant get much farther than seydan neen.
