What is your favorite weapon of war?

Post » Sun Aug 01, 2010 5:31 pm

What is your favorite weapon in history? Is it obscure? Is it well known? Do you just like the sound it makes? Can be anything weapon related, ancient to modern day. (and, yes, they must be real)

My favorite is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AR_15 its nothing special or complicated, but thats what I like about it, its well known, reliable in both firepower and accuracy (I have fired one of these several times and never had an issue). Very similar to the standard issue M-16 which I also like, I just like the amount of attachments and customization you can put on these things. Scopes, grips, laser pointers/flashlights, etc.

Disclaimer: No arguing about politics, for some reason whenever war or something about war (like weapons) is discussed someone drags politics into it and messes everything up. Just talk about weapons, not whether war is right or wrong.

Thanks.

The http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KTS8PQ06Qo.

I'm more experienced with the later flintlocks, but it was bizarre watching a tiny man firing a six foot long matchlock blasting burning paper and smoke everywhere. Much more visceral and real feeling than a modern cartridge weapon.

Oh and the Kalashnikov pisses all over any other assault weapon through sheer durability. jamming isn't great though...

Gotta go with the bastard sword. It hews, slices and stabs; cubes, dices and makes mince. The only thing it doesn't do is your laundry.

As far as firearms go, I'd have to go with the Colt 1911. Now, I'm not just some guy going "hurr durr wwii was awezome!", and I'm also no expert; I like to think that I know more about modern firearms and their application than the average person. But the .45 caliber bullet has some serious stopping power, and the pistol itself is made very well. How many other firearms do you know of that have been phased out of military service for being too good at killing people? For those of you who don't know, the Baretta M9 pistol has replaced the 1911 in the American military because the 9mm round has less of a chance of killing people than the .45, the theory being that if you kill a man it removes one man from the battlefield, but if you wound a man it takes out him and two other men to carry him away from battle (this is also the reason why most of the AR-15 family uses 5.56 as opposed to other rounds).

I gotta go with the Ak47. It's certainly not the best Assault Rifle out there, but I just love the feel of it.

Oh god yes, I'm a svcker for old weapons. Matchlocks and muskets. I also get weak in the knees whenever I see a lever action rifle such as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Marlin_Model_1894C_.357_Magnum.jpg also I love all types of old western style revolvers, if I ever become a cop and if it weren't so impractical I would trade in my Barretta or Glock or whatever handgun they issue you, and patrol around with a good old 6 shooter.
