What's your Favourite TES game?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 2:19 pm

Morrowind, Oblivion, LeFay...

Please tell me LeFay was head of the Morrowind project...

No, IIRC.

Hm. I have never played DF, but its not that difficult to inform oneself about it, and it seems to have some interesting concepts. Still, I think the main change MW made (from randomly generated terrain to set terrain in a miniaturised world) was necessary. With rising tech levels, randomly generated generic dungeons just wouldnt cut it anymore. Hence I say Morrowind for the first question.

The second, err - OB wasnt as bad to be considered least good. I mean, at least it did have some good quest lines. Arena - well, I havent played that either :P , but it just seems - well, not bad per se, just... primitive. Underdevelopped. Hence that.

As for the third question, Howards having said that creativity and originality are BAD things pretty much settles the question in favour of Julian.

Morrowind was my favorite, Oblivion my least favorite, however, I don't think I can choose between Julian and Todd.

Actually, over on the lore forum, we figured out Todd was mostly correct in his assessment of originality vs. familiarity... Though both are required. Familiarity brings them in, originality keeps them in... Just look at the Khajiit...

And I say modded Oblivion, Arena(DF was superior in all aspects, games following DF all had redeeming qualities), and I dunno who Julian Lefay is, but I can really identify with Todd Howard... I think most of the heat Todd takes belongs to Ken Rolston, who said "I put the questlines on slickly greased rails because everyone will just ignore it and do their own thing anyway," and commanded "No betrayal quests" and" everything must be a metaphor."

I have only ever played Oblivion. So far I am really enjoying it. Therefore I have no other choices to put down for least favourite game. However, I have heard Morrowind is on a par with Oblivion in terms of gameplay.

I favored Morrowind.

  • The architecture was more varied. Way more than the Anvil vs Bruma vs Cheyindhal differences.
  • The ruins had more misc. stuff for you to collect and play an "archaeologist". Makes Ayleid ruins look barren.
  • More Vampire clans - with quests!
  • They brought back Lycanthropy with an awesome story.
  • More Imperial vs Local flavor. I went full Telvanni and ditches the Mages Guild.
  • Bigger cities. Average Oblivion city has 50 NPCs and I think the number was higher for Morrowind.
  • Kill everything. Not like in Oblivion where I'm doing the Fighters Guild quest only to kill Maglir at the end.

I voted against Redguard, but only because you play a pre-made character.
Because as much as I enjoy the lore of the game, it does not mean I want to be constrained to keeping the lore accurate.
Hence I'm less interested in playing pre-made PCs.

And am not a fan of a tightly-regulated Main Quest ending (like Oblivion) whereas in Morrowind you could kill everyone and still kill Dagoth Ur.
Daggerfall was better with it's multiple endings. And who cares if your choice doesn't go to "canon", the game is far more enjoyable like that.

What ever happened to Julian, anyway? There only seems to be information about him up until 1996, and then he vanishes from history. Why is that?

Julian LaFey I believe was the lead designer on Arena and Daggerfall, Todd Howard is the current Project Leader for TES who did Morrowind and Oblivion.

Julian was only Project Leader on Daggerfall (and Todd Howard is actually credited with "Additional Design" here), in Arena Julian was Lead Programmer as well as in Battlespire. Todd took over as Project Leader with Redguard & Morrowind (and both games give Special Thanks to Julian).

Morrowind is currently my favorite because everything about is so mysterious and new, whereas I've played Oblivion a lot, and nothing seems like a surprise or really cool anymore.

He was betrayed by his Imperial Battlemage close friend Jagar Tharn Todd Howard and imprisoned in Oblivion. :stare:

I said that Daggerfall was my favorite (Morrowind is great too!!), that Oblivion was my least favorite (Good game but bad RPG IMO) and that I prefer Julian. (He did Daggerfall and Arena correct? Also, did Todd do both Morrowind and Oblivion? I thought he did just Oblivion)

Redguard and Battlespire were different game formats. They should not be compared.

THe best way to compare them - and you can't retro anybody's experience - is to compare the playing when they first came out.

Arena was a mindblaster.
Dagger was a 1000% improvement
Morrowind was da Bomb and 1000% again.
OB was fun because we all needed fresh meat after squeezing MW dry, but not the improvement we became accustomed to..

Todd [ 76 ] ** [50.00%]
Julian. [ 76 ] ** [50.00%]

Interesting, I voted for Julian but I expected Todd to win by far.

Hopefully a certain moderator won't come around to rig the votes...

I've only played Morrowind and Oblivion. Of the two, I prefer Morrowind, which seemed more interesting in terms of faction and backstory. I enjoy Oblivion also, because it seems more immersive. Example...I spent literally hours walking around in the woods picking plants in Oblivion, and Iw as so into it that I played all night.

They are two very different games, and I'v spent hundreds of hours playing each.

Why is it that the number of Morrowind/Oblivion players outnumbers the Arena/Daggerfall ones by far, and yet Julian is getting so many votes then? Are they simply saying, "well Todd is a becoming a real jerk, so I'm going to go with this Julian person"? :P

I voted Daggerfall, Daggerfall and Todd. I really like both Morrowind and Oblivion, and have never played any of the other games except a very brief attempt at Arena...

Who is Todd Howard, who is Julian Lefay, and why should I care ?

I liked Oblivion and Morrowind... I think Morrowind was a bit better overall, more area to explore, more variation, more possibilities in respect to rulesystem, better addons. But Oblivion was fine too.

Only thing I disliked about both games was the rulesystem ... I hope they'll fix that in TES V.
