What J'ziir Did in Skyrim Today

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 2:49 pm

(with all the stories emerging from people's gaming experiences I thought it might be fun to couch my thoughts on the game with an in-character story. Plus, I think J'ziir is the type of character everybody loves and secretly desire to be. Instead of focusing on the main quest this reflection will deal largely with my Khajiit's RP in Skyrim and some of the amusing glitches, moments, and observations along the way. I'm not sure if this is okay in General Discussion so Moderators please feel free to move this is you think it would be better Elsweyr :-)

PART THE FIRST

Today, J'ziir avoided nasty, nasty death. Again.

But you do not know J'ziir? Well, J'ziir is new to Skyrim and perhaps he must tell you some of his tale. J'ziir was born in Elsweyr and though he loves his home he left for Cyrodiil where he made many friends and discovered many secrets - like where people hide their shiny things. J'ziir likes shiny things, even when they do not belong to him but especially when they do. J'ziir sometimes has to explain why he is holding onto the shiny things of other people to the very sour guards of the Imperial City, but J'ziir is good at telling stories. But J'ziir is also good at running. But mostly, J'ziir is friendly and in Cyrodiil he made many many friends, especially the daughters of Cyrodillic nobility. They are very friendly with J'ziir, though their fathers are not so much, especially when they find J'ziir with their daughters. Fortunately, J'ziir can run very, very fast.

And so one day J'ziir is running very quickly from the castle of Bruma and makes his way across the Skyrim border. J'ziir did not intend to cross the border but when Khajiit is running from angry guards he does not pause to check his map. But then J'ziir, just when he thinks he is safe, stumbles upon many angry Cyrodiils fighting with Nords. J'ziir cannot imagine how the guards have found him (J'ziir is also good at hiding) and in no time J'ziir is bound and on a cart heading back to Bruma. Only, they are not taking J'ziir to Bruma.

J'ziir must drink some wine because he is very cold; he does not like to remember what happened. You have heard the story of Helgen, yes? Then J'ziir will say no more. When the dragon came J'ziir liberated a horse* and rode far, far away. Plese do not think J'ziir a coward: J'ziir has faced many enemies because J'ziir is also a very great fighter. But J'ziir knows better than to fight a dragon. J'ziir rode and rode until he came to the village of Riverwood. Here J'ziir stopped to calm himself and to set the horse free. You wonder at this but J'ziir knows that no one will believe a Khajiit in rags could own such a horse. So J'ziir sets him free and hopes he finds many wild she-horses before the Cyrodills find him.

But the wine has made J'ziir sleepy. He will write more soon.

* Notes: There is a horse visible when you are brought to the chopping block before Alduin attacks. Afterwards it is gone and I don't think its body is laying anywhere. I have used this as a way to describe J'ziir's escape outside of the MQ. As I go through there will be references to a "Big Nord". This is my MQ character and in this RP J'ziir bumps into him from time to time, allowing me to comment on MQ matters.

Hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoy writing it. :tes:

I generally don't like it when people write stories about their characters instead of just telling what happened because the don't do a very good job at being writers.

You pen a very believable Khajiit though. Well done.

(I would normally wait a while to do a second part but the first was really an introduction. In this Part we talk about graphics, people, dirt, and Smithing. And fish!)

PART THE SECOND

J'ziir is awake now and must tell you how he became wealthy in Riverwood.

The first thing J'ziir notices, now that he is not running for his life, is that Skyrim is very pretty. While J'ziir longs for the warm sands of Elsweyr he cannot but admit the beauty of the high snowy mountains, and the soft whisper of the running streams. But while J'ziir admires the mountains he will not be going to them, not until he finds warmer clothes.

Yes, J'ziir is dressed in very ragged clothes and his friends in the Imperial City would not believe J'ziir would ever dress so, because J'ziir is known for his very tasteful clothes. Despite his shame J'ziir enters the small village of Riverwood. J'ziir feels somewhat better because everyone is dressed like J'ziir, and many are far more dirty. Yes, J'ziir has noticed there is very much dirt in Skyrim, and most of it is on the people. J'ziir cannot understand this as he bathes and grooms every day. J'ziir can understand that the man at the blacksmith shop is dirty - he has a very dirty job - but there is a woman who walks around the lumber yard and J'ziir is sure she has not bathed in a long time. J'ziir begins to think that the people of Skyrim are very poor and use dirt to make themselves pretty. What is this? You say J'ziir is dirty too? Ha! J'ziir laughs at you! J'ziir is very clean and will not listen to your words.

But J'ziir was telling you how he became rich. J'ziir has no money and so he goes to the blacksmith, who is very nice, and teaches J'ziir smithing. J'ziir soon discovers that while there are many people in Riverwood, almost nobody does any work. J'ziir makes weapons and armor for the smith, he chops wood for the lumberyard, and J'ziir makes much money. Ha! Do you think J'ziir will now spend his hard earned money to buy armor and weapons? No, J'ziir buys clothes. They are not the nice clothes like in the Imperial City but they are nicer than his rags. And they are very warm. Khajiit is very smart and now makes his -own- weapons and armor which are better than what the Cyrodiil merchant sells. J'ziir saves money and makes a tidy profit. Which he will spend on wine very soon.

But now J'ziir is dirty, and he can find no bath-houses in Riverwood, so he removes his rags and goes for a swim in the river. The water is very cold but J'ziir almost purrs with delight when he sees -fish- swimming in the river. J'ziir is so happy! No one in Cyrodiil every sells fish and so J'ziir catches as many fish as he can. But now J'ziir has swum almost all the way to Whiterun and must walk back to Riverwood. By the time J'ziir gets back he is very tired and very dirty again. J'ziir takes another swim to clean himself and is very careful -not- to chase the fish this time.

It is getting dark when J'ziir puts on his new, warm clothes, and the nice blacksmith offers for J'ziir to stay at his house. J'ziir agrees and soon is sitting by the fire eating his fish and drinking many bottles of wine. He does not mind the blacksmith's wife informing J'ziir that she is taken. J'ziir knows very well what she means. But the blacksmith has been very kind to J'ziir and is also a very big Nord. And J'ziir is very tired and does not wish to run today. J'ziir sleeps soundly in a nice warm bed (alone) and dreams of the ladies of Elsweyr.

What do you say? No, you are right. Maybe J'ziir is not really rich, and he has worked a hard day. But with a belly-ful of fish and wine and a warm bed to sleep in, J'ziir is as rich as a Khajiit needs to be. At least for today.

J'ziir hopes you walk always on warm sands.

very good writing mate, and excellent story, please continue

If there's something Bethesda lack..that thing is a companion/henchman with a story and dialogues like the ones in bioware's products (neverwinter nights, dragon age)

I like Khajiits, I love M'aiq, I don't actually play them but I would really like to have a companion such as J'ziir :)

(Persuasion, Dual-Wielding, Signs and being a good Khajiit)

PART THE THIRD

J'ziir is confused.

J'ziir has said already that he is very friendly, so much so that sometimes wealthy women become entranced with J'ziir which frequently ends with J'ziir being chased by angry, angry husbands. But J'ziir has been good in Riverwood and has not been chased by the nice blacksmith he is staying with. His wife, though, continues to make comments to J'ziir about being "taken" and that J'ziir should not get any "ideas". J'ziir has heard the ladies say these things before and he knows what they mean. J'ziir feels he should say that this can never, never be. So J'ziir talks to her.

When J'ziir lived in the Imperial City he spent much time talking to people. There were very many people and J'ziir learned many things, especially about when people were home and not home, which information J'ziir found quite useful. And J'ziir became very confident of his ability to talk to people; it was like J'ziir could almost put a number on how much people liked him, or did not like him. J'ziir knows it is hard to imagine someone not liking J'ziir because he tells many stories, admires the ladies, tells dirty jokes, and once in a while acts tough to show he is not without claws. J'ziir is quite confident in the way people feel about him.

It is not so in Skyrim. J'ziir has no idea who likes him and who does not! At first J'ziir thinks it is just that Nords are hard to read but no, it is everyone. The people seem friendly but they will not let J'ziir tell them stories. The people who are angry at J'ziir (so far there are very few) cannot see J'ziir's generosity by him sharing coin and see that J'ziir is a good friend. So when J'ziir tries to speak to the blacksmith's wife she grumbles at him and walks away. Yes, J'ziir is very confused.

So J'ziir decides to try on his armor and go for a walk. The river is very nice and J'ziir likes the sounds of the birds, but he tries not to chase the butterflies because he remembers what happened when he chased the fish. Suddenly, J'ziir is attacked by a pack of wolves and J'ziir pulls out his weapons. Yes, J'ziir said weapons - two weapons. As J'ziir is artfully dodging the attacks of the wolves and slashing them with sword and dagger he realizes he never used two weapons like this before. How many times did J'ziir fight bandits in Cyrodiil using only one sword? Why did he not think of this before? J'ziir feels that maybe using two weapons is not any better than one but he enjoys how he looks as he shows the silly wolves who is the better Khajiit. In the end J'ziir stands victoriously in a pose he will have to show Khajiit ladies. J'ziir thinks they will not be able to resist his dangerous charm.

J'ziir puts away his swords and continues his walk. He sees he is nearing the Standing Stones and J'ziir remembers that he saw these when he was riding his borrowed horse away from the dragon. But now there are two Nord men standing at the stones: J'ziir recognizes them as prisoners from Helgen. J'ziir hides behind a bush and listens. The man in Stormcloak armor is telling the other that these are the "Guardian Stones"; and J'ziir thinks this reminds him of a book he read many, many moons ago called "The Firmament". J'ziir watches as the big Nord with scary eyes* touches the Mage Stone and light comes out of the Stone! When the men have gone J'ziir sneaks out - for J'ziir is very sneaky (shh! do not tell on J'ziir!) and touches the Thief Stone. J'ziir suddenly knows that he will learn to be better at sneaking and picking locks and taking shiny things from people's pockets. J'ziir thinks these Stones remind him of the blessings of the gods given to those born on certain days or in certain months - it is like the Lattice of the Khajiit, no? J'ziir decides he likes these stones because maybe one day he wants to be better at fighting and another day he wants to learn magic. Yes, J'ziir likes these very much and decides he will try to find all thirteen stones. It is only as J'ziir is feeling very happy about the Stones that he cannot remember what sign he was born under! Why can J'ziir not remember? This is very silly, he thinks, like a kitten who has too much moon sugar or a Cyrodiil who drinks too much Skooma; J'ziir always knew his sign when he lived in Cyrodiil, but now he cannot remember. J'ziir is very embarassed and very confused.

Though the day is young J'ziir decides to return to Riverwood. He can think only of a warm bed, and maybe some wine. Maybe J'ziir will sleep today. Maybe tomorrow he will be less confused. But then J'ziir comes to the blacksmith's house and the door is locked. J'ziir has no key and he knows what has happened**. He goes to talk to the blacksmith and explain that he has been a good Khajiit though the nice lady wants J'ziir to be a bad Khajiit. But the blacksmith will only talk about smithing and J'ziir cannot tell if he still likes J'ziir or not. This makes J'ziir very sad and makes him think that in the future he should not try to be a good Khajiit; if J'ziir is being chased at least he is being chased for a reason that makes J'ziir happy!

So J'ziir goes to the Sleeping Giant Inn where he must -pay- for his bed. Wine that is paid for is not as sweet as wine given by a friend (or taken by a clever Khajiit, no?) but J'ziir drinks and sits listening to the minstrel's song. He tries to talk sweetly to the lady who serves drinks but she will not listen to J'ziir; she cares only for the stories of the dragon. She will not let J'ziir tell her dirty jokes or show her his two-sword pose. J'ziir goes to his bed early, a very sad Khajiit. He misses Cyrodiil very, very much.

J'ziir hopes you walk always on warm sands.

* My MQ character (AKA "the big Nord") has a "blind" left eye.

** This actually happened. If you follow Ralaf then Gerdur will give you a key but (as far as I can tell) Alvar doesn't, leaving those who follow the Imperial eventually homeless. I suppose you could wait until Alvar or Sigrid get home and open the door...but a Khajiit sometimes wants to go to bed early.

(Whiterun, Fast Travel, Riften)

No, you are right, J'ziir will not deny it. J'ziir is a thief. Do not look at J'ziir this way! You look at J'ziir like he is crazy Argonian on Skooma looking for the Fork of the Madgod! J'ziir does not even use forks and he stays far away from the Madgod. J'ziir tries to avoid the Daedra. And the gods. And anyone who has power to put J'ziir in a dark pit for many, many moons. Unless they have a pretty daughter. But J'ziir has said enough about that already.

J'ziir is a thief. This means that J'ziir likes pretty things, even if the pretty things do not belong to him. Sometimes J'ziir likes pretty things so much that he takes them, and that way he can like them whenever he wants. But sometimes he also sells them to people who like pretty things and give J'ziir gold. J'ziir likes these people very much, and he knows he must find one in Skyrim. So J'ziir leaves the little village of Riverwood and walks to the city of Whiterun where he hopes he can find people who will be J'ziir's friend.

Now J'ziir is very good at finding things, but J'ziir cannot find the gate to Whiterun. J'ziir runs around and around the city trying to find the door. J'ziir did not have this problem in Cyrodiil and he begins to think Skyrim has made him into a crazy Argonian on Skooma. This makes J'ziir very angry so when he sees guards fighting bandits J'ziir joins in with his two swords and kills one. And do you know, they do not even thank J'ziir! Stupid guards, J'ziir will put a moldy potato in your pocket when you are sleeping.

Finally J'ziir finds the gate to the city and the stupid guard says J'ziir may not enter because there is a dragon nearby. Does J'ziir look like a dragon to you stupid egg-helmet-head guard?! Now J'ziir is angry. No, he will not put a moldy potato in your pocket - J'ziir will kill a skeever, cut off its tail, and put it in your pillow! Ha! And maybe J'ziir will relieve himself on your bed! J'ziir pays stupid bribe and decides he does not like Whiterun before he is inside.

J'ziir will not tell you all that happened to him in Whiterun. Know only this - that when little-bully boy tries to make angry Khajiit pay him money, little bully-boy wakes up the next day with a bucket on his head while J'ziir rides in a carriage to a nicer city. J'ziir smiles as he remembers this. He smiles too because there will be many smelly guards in Whiterun. They should have treated J'ziir better.

J'ziir takes a carriage to Riften. J'ziir can not say much about the ride because he fell asleep as soon as he got into the carriage. Maybe he was out too late, yes? J'ziir thinks it would be nice to watch Skyrim go by from his carriage but then, J'ziir would want to stop and look at things or maybe he would get bored and fall asleep anyway. Well, J'ziir takes his carriage to Riften and it is very late when he arrives. He is a very tired Khajiit when he stumbles to the gate and can think of nothing but a warm bed, and maybe some fish. One of the guards stops J'ziir and tells him he must pay a tax - a visitor's tax - to enter the city.

J'ziir tells you this is the only time he has thought of joining the Dark Brotherhood.

But J'ziir tries something different and he shows the stupid guard that he has claws - yes, that he knows the guard wants to be a thief like Khajiit but is only a dumb egg-helmet-head. "J'ziir knows this is a shakedown!" he tells him and the guard, he is embarrassed and lets J'ziir in. Ha! J'ziir is feeling very happy as he enters Riften.

It is now that J'ziir knows he has been unfair to the people of Riverwood. He could not understand why the people were so dirty. J'ziir sees now that the people of Riverwood are -clean-. J'ziir has never seen a city so dirty as Riften - not even Bravil is so dirty. And the nasty canol water smells very bad to J'ziir and he can only hope the people will not want him to bathe in it. J'ziir shudders. The people all watch J'ziir out of the corner of the eyes and J'ziir wonders why. Then he hears the people talking of the Thieves Guild. J'ziir knows he has come to the right city now. He goes to the inn and asks the nice lady for a room. But then J'ziir gets a better look at the nice lady.

J'ziir almost leaps out of his armor! The lady who runs the inn, J'ziir thinks her name is Keeruvo, is the scariest Argonian J'ziir has ever seen! J'ziir takes one look at her and knows she will eat him in his sleep. J'ziir had many Argonian friends in Cyrodiil but they were not so scary like Keeruvo. J'ziir politely asks for a room and fish and she takes him to his room. J'ziir sticks his sword through the door handles so no one can come in and eat him in his sleep. J'ziir is frightened, he will not lie, and does not sleep for a long time.

J'ziir hopes that you walk always on warm sands. And that no scary Argonians eat you in your sleep.

This is awesome. Bookmarked it, keep going with these.

But I do agree it would be better with some pictures, however that would make including the main quest harder, cause you would need to be on PC and spawn in a "Big Nord" for the Dragonborn.

I believe the author stated earlier that J'zirr isnt actually his character, but the big nord is. The character he is playing as is just a side character in J'zirr's story

Is there any benefit to having a dagger in the offhand as apposed to a sword axe or mace?

Ah, thanks for clearing that up. Must have missed that part.

Also, there is a slight benefit to having a dagger, in addition to looks, I believe you make duel wielding power attacks faster (The duel dagger power attack is has the most hits in the fastest time I think). Also, if you get the sneak perk, you could do x15 damage, instead of x6.

J'ziir is -one- of the characters I'm playing (I'm playing several). The "big Nord" is my Nord Battlemage (Sigurd Snowhame) with whom I am playing the MQ - finished it this week actually. Usually I'll do the MQ with one character and then play other characters that do the "other" questlines. J'ziir is my Thieves Guild character. I'm RPing that J'ziir occasionally runs into Sigurd as an in-character way to comment on the MQ. Most of the experiences the J'ziir of this topic deals with are from all of my characters so its a way to comment on everything that I'm experiencing as I play the game. Does that make sense or is it must more muddy?

I think Mitchy is right - the power attacks do seem faster. My DB character (an Argonian - but not on Skooma :-) is my first real experiment with power attacks and his are much faster when wielding daggers. And you've -got- to love the Assassin's Blade perk - J'ziir -owns- with that perk.

Thank you all for your kind words. Part the Fifth should be out next week. Watch out for Argonians!

Glad that my being late to the party isn't such a bad thing. You're an inspiration, OP! I hope part the fifth comes sooner than later!

A big cheers to you, Khajiit. The monk D'nalo* does not drink, but perhaps we can share an Elsweyr Fondue sometime by a warm Skyrim fire :foodndrink:

*I had, at the time of character creation, not properly remembered that the prefix for "warrior" is "Do," and so named him D'nalo. I considered re-rolling just for that, but I have fallen in love with my sweet monk.

Part the Fifth
(Thieves Guild, Skeevers, diseases)

You must forgive J'ziir as he sips his wine; yes, please give J'ziir his blanket. He still does not feel so well; J'ziir's first week in Riften has been not so good.

J'ziir came to Riften because he likes shiny things, but you knew this about J'ziir. Riften does not have so many shiny things, it is true, but there are people who will give J'ziir gold for shiny things; and gold is also shiny, no? So J'ziir thinks he will like Riften though it is dirty, smelly, and not so shiny.

J'ziir wakes up at the inn run by the very scary Argonian lady, and he is not well rested because he has been having nightmares about the lady eating J'ziir. Please do not think J'ziir a coward because he snuck out of the Bee and Barb; he sees you smiling - then you go and see scary Argonian lady! Maybe she will eat you and J'ziir will take your coin purse. No, J'ziir is sorry. Please give J'ziir some soup, it will help him feel better.

Already J'ziir has heard that the Thieves Guild is the power in Riften though there are rumors they are not so powerful as before. J'ziir knows this is not so - it is a ruse to lure the silly egg-helmet-head guards into a feeling of safety. So J'ziir goes to the market to find a beggar so he may join the Thieves Guild. J'ziir is not so successful; he thinks it is because he cannot tell if people like him or not, but the beggars, they just stare at J'ziir when he asks them. J'ziir is not worried, he will find them.

J'ziir must not tell you how he joined the Thieves Guild; he is not so sure the leaders would want him to say. The first thing J'ziir finds out about the Thieves Guild in Riften is that they are very, very grumpy; yes, like Khajiit with a cold. J'ziir walks into the place where they stay and he is threatened by a big stupid-name Nord named Dirge who tells J'ziir that if he is not a good Khajiit, Dirge will beat him up. J'ziir nods to big stupid-Nord with very stupid name; if Khajiit was bad you would not know, even when you wake up with smelly rotten fish in your pocket. J'ziir decides at this point that he will take over the Thieves Guild just so he can make stupid-name Nord scrub his chamber pot. Maybe J'ziir will change his name to Scrubber. Yes, J'ziir can hear it now - "I am Scrubber and you better be good thief or cunning Khajiit guildmaster will make you scrub chamber pots and change your name to Scrubber." Hee, hee J'ziir likes this idea very much...

...Oh. J'ziir bids you welcome, Dirge (of the stupid-name). No, J'ziir was not speaking about you - he was telling story about a boy at the College of Winterhold. There is no need to raise your fists Dirge, J'ziir is very sick and you would not want his cold. Okay, Dirge, J'ziir will not speak so loud. (Do you see what J'ziir means? Very grumpy.)

So J'ziir joins the Thieves Guild and before he can settle in they have a job for him. Of course they have a job for him - J'ziir was a legend in Cyrodiil and certainly his reputation has proceeded him. Yes, they want J'ziir to break into an estate, steal everything...you know these things, yes? Even the poor Vex, who also has a stupid-name, could not do this. J'ziir goes to speak to Vex because the leaders think J'ziir could learn from her. So J'ziir goes to speak to lady with stupid-name.

J'ziir speaks to Vex. She tries so hard to not be nice, but J'ziir can see through her ruffled fur. Oh it is true, little Vex, you cannot fool J'ziir. Protest all you want, J'ziir knows your heart beats loudly when J'ziir is near. The Khajiit, we are most mysterious, no? All the ladies see us and desire to play with our fur. J’ziir knows you feel this way, do not try to deny. J’ziir thinks you are pretty though you have a stupid-name. Do not worry, J'ziir will not fire you when he is Guildmaster. J’ziir knows exactly what job he will have for you…

…No, no Vex! J’ziir was not speaking to you! J’ziir was recounting the story of a Khajiit lady in Bravil, how she could not resist the dangerous charm of J’ziir. (Do you see the way she squints her nose? J’ziir knows she is trying to look like Khajiit lady for him. It is okay – J’ziir likes even the not-Khajiit ladies. See how she tries to roll her eyes when J’ziir smiles at her. She is very smitten, no?)

So J’ziir goes to this estate to steal everything; J’ziir will not tell you the whole story – he is getting tired and he must soon go back to bed. While J’ziir is sneaking through the tunnels beneath the house he is attacked. No, not by the guards – J’ziir is too sneaky for the dumb guards, they are even more dumb than the egg-helmet-heads of Riften. J’ziir is attacked by SKEEVERS. J’ziir shudders as he thinks of it. J’ziir is a great warrior and has fought many creatures but he HATES the skeevers. They are rats, no? But they are EVIL rats, like they are Daedra-rats from the hunting grounds of Hircine. J’ziir does not like them one bit and shows them who is the better Khajiit with his two swords. But when J’ziir comes back to the Guild the people say he looks pale. J’ziir does not understand this because he has fur. But soon J’ziir knows that he is sick; he begins to sniffle and feel weak. So J’ziir goes to bed and sleeps a long time. But when he wakes up he feels no better and it is then that J’ziir knows he has no medicine. J’ziir lays in his bed and asks the kindly thieves to bring him medicine. But they do not! J’ziir cannot believe this. Khajiit always care for the sickly and give them sugar, but not the thieves. J’ziir becomes very grumpy because he must leave his warm bed and trudge through the graveyard to the nasty merchant who gives him potion that tastes like…well, J’ziir will not say what. It is only later that J’ziir knows this is the merchant he had to talk to for the Guild, and he wonders if his potion was not only medicine. J’ziir is not so happy, then.

So J’ziir has been sleeping and he is beginning to feel better, but he still needs his wine and his rest. You will forgive J’ziir if he goes to bed now. No, Vex, J’ziir cannot have you visit now. Do not fear: when Khajiit is better he will teach you what he means by Two-moons. Yes, J’ziir is a good teacher.

J’ziir hopes that you walk always on warm sands.

***

D'nalo, J'ziir would love to share some Elsweyr fondue. But you must bring it to J'ziir because he does not feel well. J'ziir will share many stories with you, and tell you how the lady Vex cannot resist Khajiit. He thinks she is grumpy because there are so few Khajiit in Skyrim, yes? :foodndrink:
