Whats gone wrong?

Post » Tue Jan 18, 2011 1:21 pm

so I finally bought oblivion for pc. My pc appeared to have all the requirements as it installed like a dream. But as soon as I went to play it an error report popped up and said I was missing something.

Problem is it wont tell me what :/ im really not a computer wizz so I have no idea whats wrong. I think it may be either because my pc doesnt meet the minimum requirements or there is a problem with my.video card which, tbh, I have no idea where it is! :(

Also im not sure if this is in the wrong section but if it is, can a mod move it? Thanks :)

hm, could you post your exact error message?

Also your load order, if you've installed any mods. Or at least say what mods you've installed.

Post a dxdiag.

XP: Go to Start->run, type “dxdiag” and hit enter. Click the Save All Information button near the bottom right. This will save a Dxdiag.txt in C:\ by default. Then open the dxdiag.txt and copy/paste the information into your post.

VISTA/Windows 7: Go to Start->Search, type “dxdiag” and hit enter, click the Save All Information button near the bottom right. This will save a Dxdiag.txt in C:\ by default. Then open the dxdiag.txt and copy/paste the information into your post.

ATi Radeon HD 6850 (150€) seems to have currently the best price-quality ratio.

Make sure your motherboard has a PCI-Express 2.0 slot. It'd be overall better if you post a DXDiag, as Belanos said...

How old is your PC then? Have you bought it pre-built? If so, what brand and model is?

...you're not getting anywhere with that PC, I'm sorry to say.

Better if you throw it off and buy a new one.

Yes, that thing is an antique as far as computers go. It will be useful for browsing the internet and that's about it.

Socket 478, meanest processor it supports is a P4 3.0....... No PCIe slots, you have AGP instead..... and DDR memory.... No. That machine is not worth spending any money on. If you want to be able to play, save your cash for a new system.

You'll need at least DDR2 RAM if you want to game on your PC.

No PCI-E support means that the rig you have is pretty much a lost cause, as has been stated. Go for at least Core 2 CPU support on your new MoBo (along with DDR2 and PCI-E), but if you have the cash, try for Core I support (although in reality, Oblivion doesn't really care about CPUs above Core 2).

Cheap GPUs range from the (as stated) Radeon HD 6850, but you could probably find some decent listings on a GeForce 8 or 9 series now ($80.00 on an 8800 GT from Amazon, for example, which is the card I have and it's never let me down once). They're a bit old, but I know you can count on them for a nice smooth Oblivion experience, even when you weigh it down with lots of hefty mods.
