Whats a good laptop for gaming?

Post » Mon Feb 15, 2010 5:09 am

My apologies to the OP for my steering this off topic, but seriously....get the Asus

Haha waste, I bet you buy a powerful computer to hide your weakness.

Macs don't need as much resources in order to run... A mac spends less time running it self and more time running what your running.

I admit you have an impressive set up...

But this one is a better more practical solution.... $2000

http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MB953LL/A?mco=MTM3NDc2NjA

2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 ----- Thats fast enough
4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB ---- plenty for mac os x
1TB Serial ATA Drive ----- space is cheap, but more
ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB ----- pretty good for most games.... Play Crysis on medium and beat it once, most games you don't even want to play again.
8x double-layer SuperDrive ------ all computers should have one
Apple Magic Mouse ---- magic mouse is great for anything besides gaming. great battery life
Apple Wireless Keyboard (English) and User's Guide ---- great battery life

I believe this one blows yours out of the water :flamethrower:

http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MB535LL/A?mco=MTM3NDc3NjI

"Two 2.26GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon"
"6GB (6x1GB)" ram
"640GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s"
NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB"

And come on dude extra space is dirt cheap... You can buy terabytes for 70$ www.dealsea.com

Did you know this about the iPhone?

The retina display is the highest resolution display on a phone
The iPhone 4 has the 1Ghz A4 chip from iPad
The iPhone 4 has 512MBs of ram twice that of the iPad
App store is the largest center for high quality and volume of apps...
iOS 4.0... (multitasking, better performance...)

I was hoping I'd never see the day when a hard-core Mac fan would come to these forums and preach about the "superiority" of Apple PCs and that paying $500 is considered reasonable for more battery life and a more slower setup. The reality distortion field is rather strong with you.

For $2K you get a PC that is twice as powerful as that first Mac you linked....and that's including the monitor. You praise so much about being able to play Crysis on medium when you could've maxed out the game and then some.

The 2nd Mac is a joke...big deal if it comes with dual Xeons. Unless you're VERY VERY heavy in multitasking or crunching infinite numbers, you'd hardly even utilize one chip. And the fact that this costs $3300 for starting and only comes with a GT 120...seriously??? Just because it costs a lot doesn't mean it's better. The reality is this machine is simply just WAY overpriced and unbalanced for gaming purpose. The machine is geared more towards the server end and I must say it fails even in that regard in terms of price/performance ratio.

I will give you one argument though in regards to notebook build quality and bezel...yes the aluminum frame and high-end screens are nice....although past news of overheating and yellow-screen reports are rather amusing to me. But that is the difference between a lot of Mac fans and PC gamers...we go for hardware quality over aesthetics. It just doesn't make sense to pay so much more for a shiny product that is quite inferior in performance with the exception of battery life. Then again, I game for long sessions anyways, so being plugged in eventually becomes a must no matter what. If I bought two extra batteries for that Asus notebook, it would probably still cost less than your MacBook and of course still perform better. Sure, I'd have to shut down and switch them out, but it makes a hell of a lot more sense to me.

And the IPhone 4 is quite the laugh with the antenna problems...that is just straight up design flaw. Yet Steve Jobs and company first tells users that they're "holding it the wrong way"...then claims later that there is no antenna problem. Oh....but they just so happen to release a phone case (something they've never done in the past) on release day that eliminates the problem...it'll cost you $30. Disgusting to say the least. If I ever look into a smartphone, the HTC Incredible will probably get my money.

Also the OP was asking for a laptop under $1000.

A Mac should be the last recommendation with that budget.

Hmm... there's not much you can do with a budget like that. Especially if you want a gaming laptop.

I guess this could be closed now.

Hey now. I can still dig around for a few laptops that he may like.

A good way to cut back on costs is to get a computer without an OS. If you have an unused one laying around you can install it on you new PC and save some money.

I can't seem to find anything that hasn't already been mentioned. Oh well.

Indeed. A lot of people seem to have missed that part, and instead posted a lot of junk about irrelevant stuff that doesn't help the OP in any way.

I'm closing this now because the excessive amount of junk. Don't post junk :nono:

If the OP wants to make a new thread, feel free, but there were some good suggestions in this thread already.
